Introduction
Introduction
We are going to be in four different passages tonight.
Turn with me to John 3:18, Romans 6:23, 10:14, then finally 2 Corinthians 4:3.
Last week we learned something very simple but very important:
If I do not tell people about Christ… who will?
God has placed believers in the world as His witnesses.
But tonight we ask another question:
Why is it so urgent?
Why does the Bible place such heavy emphasis on evangelism?
Why did Jesus speak so often about the lost?
Have you ever walked through a cemetery and looked at the dates on the gravestones?
Some lived long lives.
Some died young.
Some died unexpectedly.
But every single one of those people stepped into eternity.
And when a person enters eternity, there are only two possibilities.
With Christ.
Or without Him.
The Bible teaches something sobering,
People do not wait until death to determine their eternal condition.
Jesus said in John 3:18 that those who do not believe are condemned already.
That means every day people are living their lives, going to work, raising families, making plans…
while still spiritually lost.
And that is why the gospel is urgent.
Because someone you know today may step into eternity tomorrow.
John 3:18 is a very sobering statement.
Not condemned later.
Not condemned eventually.
Condemned already.
They are not simply undecided voters waiting to choose a religion.
According to Jesus, they are already lost without Christ.
They have been blinded to the truth by sin and by the god of this world.
And as those who have received the Light, we now have the responsibility to point others to the Light.
My prayer tonight is simple:
That you and I would leave here with a deeper compassion for lost people and a greater urgency to tell them about Christ.
Because the truth is:
Time is running out.
According to recent estimates, the global number of deaths in 2026 is projected to be around 63.63 million,
which translates to roughly 174,349 deaths per day, 7,265 per hour, 121 per minute, and nearly 2 per second.
And the majority of them die without Christ.
So Why do we have to tell them about Jesus? Because for those 3600 souls, that will die during this message, and those 63 million that will die this year, it is urgent
What do we have to understand this evening?
I. The Problem is Clear
I. The Problem is Clear
John 3:18 says: “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already…”
Jesus pulls the curtain back and shows us the true condition of humanity.
A. Man Is Condemned
The Bible does not describe humanity as spiritually neutral.
There are only two conditions of mankind.
Believers — not condemned
Unbelievers — condemned already
There is no middle ground.
The world says:
“People are basically good.”
The Bible says:
People are already under condemnation.
Romans 3:23 says: “For all have sinned…”
Sin is universal.
Every person we meet is a sinner.
That includes:
our neighbors
our coworkers
our friends
our family members
The word condemned is a legal term.
It means a verdict that has already been given.
Imagine walking into a courtroom and hearing the judge say:
“There is no need for a trial. I have seen the evidence and it is overwhelming, I have already decided the verdict”
That is the picture Jesus gives.
Humanity is not waiting for the verdict.
The verdict has already been declared.
Guilty.
Without Christ, people stand condemned before a holy God.
And Jesus tells us why: “because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
It is not simply ignorance.
It is rejection.
But Jesus goes further.
He explains why people do not believe
A. Man Is Condemned
B. Man Loves Darkness
John 3:19 says: “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light…”
Jesus says the problem is not that the Light never came.
The Light has already come.
Jesus Christ entered this world.
Truth has been revealed.
But mankind made a choice.
They loved darkness rather than light.
Sin is not just something people fall into.
It is something people do naturally.
We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are a sinner.
And because sinners love their sin, they dont want it revealed;
therefore Jesus tells us that, those who doeth evil hate the Light that exposes it.
A. Man Is Condemned
B. Man Loves Darkness
C. Man Hates the Light
Verse 20 says: “For every one that doeth evil hateth the light…”
Notice the strong language.
Not dislikes.
Hates.
Sin causes people to avoid truth.
Because truth exposes sin.
When light shines into darkness, things become visible.
That is exactly what the gospel does.
It exposes the reality of sin and the need for a Savior.
And that is why sometimes when we witness to people, we feel resistance.
It is not always personal.
It is spiritual.
The Light is shining into darkness. And darkness fights back.
But that is exactly why the gospel must be shared.
Because without the Light, people remain in darkness.
II. The Penalty is Certain
II. The Penalty is Certain
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death…”
Sin earns a payment.
Just like a worker earns wages.
The paycheck for sin is death.
Not just physical death.
Everyone dies physically.
But this verse is speaking about spiritual death.
Separation from God.
Eternal judgment.
Revelation calls it the second death.
This is why the gospel matters.
Without Christ, people are not just having a difficult life.
They are heading toward eternal separation from God called Hell
That is why evangelism is not optional.
It is rescue work.
Imagine watching someone walk toward a cliff.
And you know they cannot see the drop ahead.
Would you stay silent?
Of course not.
Love warns.
Love speaks.
Love reaches.
And that is exactly what the gospel does.
It calls people back before it is too late.
III. The People Are Clueless
III. The People Are Clueless
2 Corinthians 4:3
“If our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost.”
The tragedy is that many people do not realize their condition.
They may be:
religious
moral
successful
kind
But they are still lost.
They may say:
“I think I'm a good person.”
“I believe everything will work out.”
“All religions lead to God.”
But sincerity does not remove sin.
A person can be sincerely wrong.
A man can sincerely believe a bridge will hold him.
But if the bridge is broken, sincerity will not save him.
The Bible says people are spiritually blinded.
Just a few verses later Paul explains:
“The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…”
Satan works constantly to keep people from seeing the truth.
Which means something very important.
Lost people are not simply enemies.
They are victims of deception.
That should change how we see them.
Not with anger.
Not with pride.
But with compassion.
IV. The Power of the Calling
IV. The Power of the Calling
This is where we come in.
Romans 10:14“How shall they hear without a preacher?”
God has chosen to reach the world not through, pastors, evangelists or missionaries, but through believers.
Through people like you and me.
Ordinary Christians.
God takes the gospel from heart to heart through His people.
Someone told you.
Someone told me.
And now the responsibility passes to us.
We are the messengers.
We are the witnesses.
We are the ones God has placed in workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, and families.
And there are people in those places who may never hear the gospel unless we tell them.
God has chosen to reach the world through people.
Which means the responsibility of the gospel now rests in our hands.
Imagine driving home late at night.
You turn down your street and see a house on fire.
Flames are coming out of the windows.
Smoke is pouring from the roof.
Then you realize something terrifying.
Someone is still inside.
and even worse you see firefighters standing in the front yard holding a fire hose but not spraying water.
Now imagine walking up to them and asking, Hey what are you doing? Why are you not helping them?
Then they say:
“Well… I don't want to interrupt them.”
“I don't want to offend them.”
“I don't want them to think we are judging their house.”
What would your response be?
They have all the nessecary tools, all the training and most importantly they have a responsibility to rescue those people.
Guess what, you and I are just like those firefighters. We have the equipment, the training and the responsibility to atleast try and rescue that one closest to the flames.
And not doing it, we are neglecting our duties and will be held accountable.
The Personal Challenge
Now the message becomes personal.
Think about the people you know.
Someone in your life is lost.
Maybe:
Someone you cross pathes with
Someone who laughs with you.
Talks with you.
Works beside you.
But without Christ they are still lost.
And if they die without Christ…
They will face eternity without Him.
That truth should not produce pride.
It should produce compassion.
Matthew says: Jesus looked at the crowds and was moved with compassion.
Because they were sheep without a shepherd.
Lost.
Confused.
Heading in the wrong direction.
And Jesus cared.
If we have the heart of Christ, we will care too.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Last week we learned:
I must tell.
Tonight we learned why.
Because people are not neutral.
Without Christ they are:
sinners
condemned
spiritually blind
and lost
And God has placed believers in their lives to tell them the gospel.
Before you leave tonight, I want you to do something.
Think of one person you know who is lost.
Picture their face.
Their name just came to your mind.
Now ask yourself: Who will tell them about Jesus?
Maybe the reason God put them in your life… was so that you would.
Pray for them.
Look for an opportunity.
And when the moment comes — speak.
Because someone you know is lost.
And God may want to use you to reach them.
