Spiritual Deepening Week debrief - share your top takeaway from the week!
Throughout the week, Jeremiah was discussing spiritual warfare and how to battle according to our identity in Christ
Several times, he mentioned the time that Jesus was in the wilderness
We are in a time in the church calendar right now called lent. It is the 40+ day time period between the ash Wednesday and easter that we spend time reflecting, confessing, and strengthening out relationship with God
And so, it is convenient that Jeremiah was talking about this this week during this season
Today, I want to look at the beginning of Jesus heading into the wilderness!
As we read a little while ago Jesus came to John the baptist to be baptized
This is the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus!
Notice He is baptized and the Holy Spirit descends upon Him!
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
So, Jesus was full of the HS! There is certain debate as to when Jesus received the HS. We know that He was conceived by the HS, but does that mean the HS indwelt Him, there is debate. So, not really the point for today
But, we do know for certain that He was full of the Spirit as He was led into the wilderness!
We also know that as we read through the book of Acts that the apostles received the HS on the day of pentecost, but was “full” of the HS at different times!
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Paul when in Cyprus encounters Elymas, a magician who was coming against him addresses him:
9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
Commands:
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
The greek word to be filled here is a verb in a tense meaning it is an ongoing action!
So, being filled with the HS is something that should continually happen in the life of the believer!
Did you notice something about all of the verses that I read?
They weren’t filled with the HS to sit in a church pew!
They weren’t filled with the HS for their lives to remain the same!
They were filled with the HS to do something! To speak, to sing, to give thanks to submit to one another!
Being filled with the HS should empower us and enable us!
And for Jesus going into the wilderness, the filling of the HS was to confront the temptation of the enemy!
The beginning of spiritual warfare is being filled with the HS!
When we are fighting battles and temptations of the enemy, maybe we should begin by asking the HS to fill us!
To fill our bodies, to fill our hearts and minds, to fill the place where we are gathering….
