We have been going through the book of Ephesians and this morning we will wrap that series.
Unfortunately, we are skipping over a few things to get to chapter 6 but here is an overview…
In Chapter 4 Paul reminds us to not live as the Gentiles - Ephesians 4:31–32 “31 Let all bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander be removed from you, along with all malice. 32 And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
In Chapter 5 Paul implores us to “imitators of Christ” and reminds us that we are to walk in the light Ephesians 5:11–14 “11 Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret. 13 Everything exposed by the light is made visible, 14 for what makes everything visible is light. Therefore it is said: Get up, sleeper, and rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
He continues to instruct them in how our new identity should affect our earthly relationships. He addresses the husband/wife relationship, the parent/child relationship, and even servant and master relationships - Ephesians 5:7–8 “7 Therefore, do not become their partners. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light—”
Now we get to today’s message — The Warrior Ethos - Ephesians 6:10-20
Ephesians 6:10–20 CSB
10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. 13 For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. 14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, 15 and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. 16 In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God. 18 Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints. 19 Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel. 20 For this I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough to speak about it as I should.
What is the Warrior Ethos - it is a foundational mindset that guides how members train, live and fight - it is that code of conduct centered on courage, selflessness, and a an indomitable will to succeed.
There are 4 Core principles:
A. Place the mission first: prioritize the objective above personal needs or safety.
B. Never accept defeat: maintain a refusal to give up, even when facing significant adversity or failure.
C. Never quit: commit to persistent effort and endurance until the task is complete.
D. Never leave a fallen comrade: maintain unwavering loyalty and responsibility for fellow team members.

Our strength comes from God and is limitless.

A warriors ethos isn’t about self-reliance; it’s about knowing the strength of purpose, relying on your fellow warriors and trusting the Commander’s orders
We talk about the “indomitable will” - in military terms, this is resilience. In spiritual terms, it is grace.
We don’t fight FOR victory; we fight FROM the victory Jesus has already won.

Identify the enemy.

Satan is the enemy.
When we forget who the real enemy is, we start attacking our brother’s and sister’s in arms.
This doesn’t mean Satan won’t use people to attack us.
He especially love to use church people to attack other church people.
“Friendly fire” can be demoralizing and deadly.
Identifying the spiritual root of a conflict prevents us from wasting our ammunition of the wrong targets.

Equip yourself for battle.

Notice it is the full armor of God - to fight well if we must be properly outfitted.
A soldier doesn’t pick and choose which gear to wear - if you have the shield but no helmet , you’re vulnerable.
There is even a proper way to put the armor on.
The Belt of Truth
The Function: For a Roman soldier, the belt tucked in the loose tunic and held the sword sheath. It kept everything together so he wouldn’t trip.
The Spiritual Meaning: Truth is the foundation. Without objective truth (God’s Word), the rest of your armor will fall apart. It protects you from the "tripping hazards" of lies and deception.
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
The Function: This heavy piece of metal protected the heart and vital organs from fatal blows.
The Spiritual Meaning: This isn't about your own "goodness," but Christ’s righteousness credited to you. When the enemy attacks your character or fills you with guilt, this breastplate protects your heart from those accusations.
3. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
The Function: Roman boots (caligae) had metal studs on the bottom, like cleats. They provided traction and allowed the soldier to stand his ground on slippery or uneven terrain.
The Spiritual Meaning: Having "peace with God" gives you a firm footing. You can’t fight if you’re slipping. It allows you to stand firm in the middle of a storm because you know you are secure in Him.
4. The Shield of Faith
The Function: This was a large, rectangular shield (scutum). Soldiers would soak them in water so that when the enemy fired "flaming arrows," the wet leather would extinguish the fire on impact.
The Spiritual Meaning: Faith is your first line of defense. It intercepts the "fiery darts" of doubt, fear, and temptation before they can even touch your soul.
5. The Helmet of Salvation
The Function: Protects the head, the command center. A soldier without a helmet is one blow away from losing his ability to think or see.
The Spiritual Meaning: The assurance of your salvation protects your mind. When the enemy tries to make you doubt your identity or your future, the "Helmet" keeps your thinking clear and focused on the hope of eternity.
6. The Sword of the Spirit
The Function: The gladius was a short, sharp stabbing weapon used for close-quarters combat.
The Spiritual Meaning: This is the only offensive weapon listed. Paul explicitly identifies it as the Word of God. Like Jesus in the wilderness, we use specific scripture to "cut through" the enemy’s lies.

Never fight without air cover.

While not a physical piece of armor, Paul ends the list by saying to "pray at all times."
Prayer is the “radio” to HQ.
In the Warrior Ethos, this is our Comms (Communications). Armor is useless if you aren't in contact with your Commander.
Prayer is how you receive orders and call in the "Air Cover" or that divine intervention we need in the midst of the battle.
This should be a point but I’ll make it here - never leave a fallen comrade.
Our prayer isn’t just for our own safety and help - it is for the whole unit
The Warrior Ethos isn’t just a checklist of gear; it is a posture of the heart. It is the refusal to retreat when the world gets loud, the refusal to quit when the soul gets weary, and the refusal to let a brother or sister fall alone on the battlefield of life.
The armor is fitted, the mission is set, and keep the prayer cover constant. Don’t just study the battle—. Step out in His power, stand in His truth, and live like the soldier He’s called you to be."
