Romans 2:18 KJV 1900

Religious knowledge and covenant privilege are real gifts from God.

The Confidence of Religious Instruction

Romans 2:19 KJV 1900
19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
“Guide to the blind”

moral and spiritual instructors

They viewed themselves as teachers of the immature

Romans 2:20 KJV 1900

“Instructor of the foolish”
“Teacher of children”

They believed they possessed the embodiment of truth

“In the law you have the embodiment of knowledge and truth”
Those who know God’s truth often assume they are automatically qualified to teach it.

The Hypocrisy of Religious Practice

Teaching others but not teaching oneself

Romans 2:21 KJV 1900
21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?
“You who teach others, do you not teach yourself?”

Preaching morality while committing sin

Romans 2:22 KJV 1900
22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
stealing
adultery
sacrilege

Boasting in the Law while breaking it

Romans 2:23 KJV 1900
23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
“You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law”
Preaching thrust: The real issue is not ignorance of truth, but inconsistency with truth

The Consequence of Religious Hypocrisy

Romans 2:24 KJV 1900
24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
Isaiah 52:5 KJV 1900
5 Now therefore, what have I here, saith the Lord, That my people is taken away for nought? They that rule over them make them to howl, saith the Lord; And my name continually every day is blasphemed.
The conduct of God’s people either honors God or gives the world ammunition against Him.
