What are some of the arguments you have heard or have had yourself against Christianity, Jesus, or the church?
If you could sum up in one word the root of those arguments what would that word be?
Ecclesiastes 1:9 ESV
9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.
The same arguments have been made for thousands upon thousands of years
No new sin
No new suffering
No new way of thinking

The Preeminence of Christ

Colossians 1:15–20 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Colossians 1:
Why does Paul write this to the Colossians?
They faced the same arguments we do
false teachers would come in and challenge the true nature and deity of Christ
Suffering would come and how could a good God allow that?
These are questions that would have been posed to the early church
same as we face today
What is Paul’s argument?
He argues that Christ is before all things and by Him, through Him, and for Him all things are made and held together
Before all things

Before All Things

Colossians 1:15 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
“Firstborn”

Cultural stand point
First Son inherited all that was the Fathers
His responsibility to carry on the work the Father had set out
In the Trinity, Jesus is the creative agent of all things, making Him the ruler

By Him All Things Were Created

Colossians 1:16 ESV
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Everything is placed in order by Christ, for the glory of Christ
where you were born and where you live
done for the glory of God
Your parents
for the glory of God
The school you attend and the future school you will attend
for the glory of God
The job you have or will have
for the glory of God
Dependent on how you choose to see and let God intervene

In Him All Things Hold Together

Colossians 1:17 ESV
17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Colossians 1:17
At the Macro Level
anything we can see
