Intro:
Our journey through the book of Romans up until now has been a painful one.
We have heard the words none and all many times and each and every time we seem to be on the wrong side of the equation.
We have seen that no one can be right with God by our works.
This is most definitely the heart of the Bible.
We cannot reach God on our own, he will have to reach down to us.
The passage that we will be studying today is what many people call the center of the Bible.
This passage will be a majestic view of our amazing God.
Machu Picchu Peru is a place that everyone ought to see at some point if they travel to Peru.
It is considered one of the new 7 wonders of the world.
I have had the privilege of giving people tours there quite a few times.
The trip to Machu Picchu is an interesting one.
First you fly over the Andes mountains from Arequipa for 45 min.
or take a bus if you have an extra 14-16 hours to spare.
Then you wake up at 3 am and get to the train station by 4 am.
You get on a train that takes 7 hours to get to the city of Aguas Calientes.
Slide of Train
This city has one purpose and that is to house those that are headed to Machu Picchu to see the ruins.
Slide of Aguas Calientes
The city is situated in the middle of mountains with one main street that serves a double purpose as a train track.
When the trains come in then the main street is occupied by the train.
Slide of Train in the city
You would usually spend the night in this “city” and the next morning head up to explore Machu Picchu.
Now here is a picture of the road you have to travel up to see Machu Picchu.
Slide of road.
After going to Machu Picchu over 30 times there is something that happens as you crest that last hill.
You can see nothing but a windy road and then all of a sudden you are blown away with this hidden jewel.
Slide of Machu Picchu.
What we are about to see is a breath taking vision of the gospel.
We will crest the hill and be blown away by our amazing God.
The last chapters have been rough chapters that have stated beyond any doubt that we are sinners and then we crest the hill with this passage.
Paul is saying that the Law is awesome but not to be justified (saved) with.
Slide This Law for you.
One of the most important words in the bible is this little word that will start up in verse 21.
It is a key word that always introduces a new thought and usually marks a contrast from what was before.
There is no where in the Bible where this is seen more clearly than here.
Paul has illustrated the depths of mans lostness up until now.
This conjunction (the word but) is just about to change everything.
This is one of the most important passages and most beautiful passages of the book of Romans.
This passage is a hinge where everything changes.
If you have been here for the last several weeks we have been under a dark cloud of the reality of mankind.
Time and again it has been proven to us how we will never please God in our own works.
The weight of the last few weeks has been pretty heavy.
But wait, I promise things are about to change.
Now read the first two words of the first verse with me.
BUT NOW
I. Apart -
Are those words not beautiful?
BUT NOW!
This is what you used to be but now.
You had no hope but now
You had no future but now
You were Condemned but now
You were Helpless in the power of sin but now
You were Powerless to escape the wrath of God but now
Martin Lloyd Jones said “there are no more wonderful words in the whole of Scripture than just these two words ‘But Now’”

But now the Righteousness of God.
Righteousness: the act of doing what God requires—‘righteousness, doing what God requires, doing what is right.’
This word Righteousness is one of the most important words in the book of Romans.
We can be made Righteous, what a thought.
Especially after all we have seen leading up to this passage.
What we must understand is that our salvation is apart from the law not because of it.
We want to earn but God will only give.
Not because of what we do but because of what he did.
Both the Law and the Prophets testify of this.
The OT pointed to a work of God that would be in the future and would provide us with salvation.
This NOW that is stated is not something that goes against the law.
God cannot lower His standards.
If he is going to save people from the ruin of sin, it has to be done in a way that does not violate the law.
The Law in the Old Testament had two parts to it.
Moral Law - was to uncover sin.
Ceremonial Law - was to provide temporary cover for the sin that the Moral Law showed us.
This would teach his people that he intends to cleanse and cancel sin no matter what the cost.
Paul says you can have righteousness but apart from the law.
Slide Apart from the Law
In this passage we will see, “The Miracle of Righteousness”.
God’s total answer is sufficient for man’s total failure.
the act of doing what God requires—‘righteousness, doing what God requires, doing what is right.’

As we have been shown in the book of Romans up to here there is absolutely no way for us to achieve our own salvation.
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith.
As we have been shown in the book of Romans up to here there is absolutely no way for us to achieve our own salvation.
Even the righteousness of God comes to us through faith in Jesus Christ and it is only by faith.
Faith is only as good as what we put our faith in.
Faith: We believe and place our faith and trust in God alone for our forgiveness.
Faith is only as good as what we put our faith in.
We realize that there is nothing we can do.
Many people have missed what faith is speaking of.
They think that faith is speaking of the amount of faith that they have.
They struggle feeling that what they have isn’t enough faith.
Because of this they never truly understand the joy that comes only through faith in Christ alone.
The problem is that when people do this they are having faith in their faith instead of placing their faith in him alone.
The second mistake is similar and has to do with the object of faith.
Faith is only as good as where we put our faith.
Faith is a common denominator of life.
We all have faith and could not live a single day without it.
We take people at their word, we believe what we read in the newspapers, books, we trust our money in the bank, the doctor or chiropractor, the hairdresser, we eat what is placed in front of us.
