The Sixth Seal – The Day the World Recognizes the Wrath of the Lamb

FROM BEHIND THE VEIL Session ___ Title: The Sixth Seal – The Day the World Recognizes the Wrath of the Lamb Primary Text: Revelation 6:12–17 (KJV)
Primary Scripture Reading
Revelation 6:12–17 KJV 1900
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Introduction

The seals have been progressively revealing what happens as the Lamb opens the scroll of judgment.
The first seal released deception. The second seal released war. The third seal revealed famine and economic collapse. The fourth seal unleashed widespread death. The fifth seal revealed the martyrs crying out beneath the altar.
Each seal has intensified the pressure on the earth.
But the sixth seal marks a turning point in the prophetic timeline.
Up to this point humanity may still attempt to explain events politically, economically, or environmentally. But when the sixth seal is opened, the shaking becomes so severe that the entire world realizes something unmistakable.
This is the moment when the world recognizes that the wrath of God has begun.
At the same time, this seal reveals another critical event for the people of God. Scripture teaches that believers are not appointed to wrath. Therefore, before the full outpouring of God's wrath unfolds in the trumpet and bowl judgments, the saints are gathered to the Lord.
Behind the veil we see both realities unfolding at the same time: the terror of the world and the deliverance of God's people.

A Great Earthquake – The Shaking of the Earth

Revelation 6:12
“…there was a great earthquake…”
This is not a localized earthquake. The language indicates a massive global shaking.
Throughout Scripture earthquakes accompany moments when God intervenes in human history.
Exodus 19:18 records the mountain trembling when God descended on Sinai. Matthew 27:51 records the earth shaking when Jesus died on the cross. Matthew 28:2 records an earthquake when the angel rolled away the stone at the resurrection.
Earthquakes mark moments when heaven breaks into earthly reality.
The sixth seal earthquake represents a shaking so powerful that the stability of the earth itself is disrupted.
Behind the veil we see that when God begins to shake the earth, it is to expose everything that cannot stand.

The Sun, Moon, and Stars Disturbed

Revelation 6:12–13
“…the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood…”
This imagery appears throughout the prophets.
Joel 2:31 says the sun will turn to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and terrible day of the Lord.
Jesus referenced the same signs in Matthew 24:29 when describing the events surrounding His coming.
The darkening of the sun and the blood-red moon symbolize cosmic disruption. The normal order of creation is interrupted.
The stars falling to the earth are compared to figs shaken from a tree by strong wind, emphasizing sudden and violent change.
Behind the veil we see that creation itself responds to the authority of its Creator.

The Heavens Open

Revelation 6:14
“And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together…”
This imagery suggests the visible heavens being pulled back like a curtain.
Humanity suddenly becomes aware of the reality of the throne of God.
For generations people have denied God’s authority, mocked His warnings, or dismissed Scripture. But when the sixth seal is opened, the veil between the physical and spiritual realm begins to lift.
What humanity once ignored becomes undeniable.

The Reaction of the World

Revelation 6:15–16
The response of the world is universal.
Kings Great men Rich men Military leaders Ordinary citizens
Every class of society reacts the same way: they hide.
Power cannot protect them. Money cannot shield them. Influence cannot save them.
The world that once rejected God now recognizes His authority.
They cry out for the mountains to fall on them and hide them from the face of Him who sits on the throne.
This moment reveals the collapse of human pride.

The Wrath of the Lamb

Revelation 6:16–17
“…hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb.”
This is one of the most powerful phrases in Scripture.
The Lamb represents Jesus as the sacrificial Savior. Yet here the Lamb is also revealed as the righteous Judge.
The world realizes something profound: the One they rejected is now the One who judges.
They declare:
“The great day of his wrath is come.”
This is the moment when the earth recognizes that divine judgment has begun.

The Deliverance of the Saints

At the same moment the world recognizes the wrath of the Lamb, another prophetic promise comes into view.
Scripture repeatedly teaches that the people of God are not appointed to experience God's wrath.
1 Thessalonians 5:9 says,
“For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The wrath being referenced in Revelation 6 is the beginning of the Day of the Lord judgments that continue through the trumpets and bowls.
Before that wrath unfolds fully, the saints are gathered to Christ.
This aligns with the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17:
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout… and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air.”
The cosmic signs described in the sixth seal match the timing Jesus described in Matthew 24:29–31, where immediately after the great disturbances in the heavens the Son of Man gathers His elect.
Behind the veil we see that while the earth trembles in fear, the people of God are being gathered to the Lord.
The world experiences terror. The saints experience deliverance.

The Question of the Sixth Seal

Revelation 6:17
“…who shall be able to stand?”
This question echoes across the earth.
Who can stand when the earth shakes, the heavens open, and the wrath of God begins?
Not the wealthy. Not the powerful. Not the politically connected.
Only those who belong to the Lamb.
This question prepares the reader for Revelation chapter 7, where God reveals those who are sealed and protected.

Application

The sixth seal teaches several powerful truths.
First, the stability of the world is temporary. Systems that appear permanent can collapse suddenly.
Second, the authority of Christ will ultimately be recognized by every person on earth.
Third, believers have a promise of deliverance from the wrath of God. Our hope is not in earthly systems but in the return of Christ.
Finally, the question “who shall be able to stand?” challenges every believer to ensure their life is anchored in the Lamb who was slain.

Conclusion

The sixth seal reveals two simultaneous realities.
For the world, it is the beginning of terror as they recognize the wrath of God.
For the saints, it is the moment of gathering and deliverance as the Lord fulfills His promise to take His people to Himself.
Behind the veil we see that while the world trembles before the throne, the people of God are being drawn toward it.

Next Session Preview

In the next session we will move into Revelation chapter 7.
Before the seventh seal is opened, heaven pauses the judgment sequence. During this pause we see the sealing of God's servants and the vision of a great multitude standing before the throne.
This chapter reveals how God preserves His people even in the midst of global judgment.
