The Prodigal Son video (The Prodigal son story)
What the father said to his oldest son revealed something that the man had never realized in his entire life:
“And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours.
We have 2 different scenarios is this parable.
The first one, was the younger son. He represents the son that had to prove something. (I can make it on my own and do my own business)
The second scenario is with the older son. He represents the performance life. I will show everyone in my Father’s business that I can do just as good as Him.
Both missed out on a deep relationship. But the older son kept his relationship on servant level. He thought he had to earn the inheritance that was already his.
In this story Jesus was showing the Father’s love and grace for both the sinner and the religious person. He had compassion for both (Luke 15:22;31). And welcomed them both into their place in His family.
If we want to see a culture of inheritance that succeeds, when need an environment that celebrates. if if someone didn’t work for it. The older son did not want to celebrate the son’s return, because he did not deserve it (Luke 15:30). But the Father did (Luke 15:32).
So what is this inheritance?
It is introduced in this story as the father’s LIVELIHOOD (everything needed to live). By understanding this, maybe it will be easier for us to celebrate each other and stop trying to prove a point or perform to gain acceptance.
“But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
Bring out the best robe - Galatians 3:26-29
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
To live in your inheritance you must be clothed with Christ - the best robe to have on - (The Jesus part of the inheritance)
Put a ring on his hand - A signet ring represented - signify the authority and to seal business transactions.
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
The Holy Spirit like the ring reminds us of who we are what we have to live in this heavenly inheritance (1 Peter 2:9) - (The Holy Spirit part of the inheritance)
And Sandals on his feet -
and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
How beautiful upon the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who proclaims peace, Who brings glad tidings of good things, Who proclaims salvation, Who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
“And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet.
and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Our Heavenly Father leads into our inheritance, equips us for the inheritance, and co-works with us to help others into their inheritance. (The Father part of the inheritance)
Our identity is to not be tied into what we do or to our surroundings; it is to be tied solely to the Creator. It is from the Creator that true identity comes. God not only created the universe, He gave everything an identity from which it is to operate. Apart from this identity, we will fall short of the fullness that He intended.
