Notes
Palm Sunday - the day we celebrate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem heading to the cross.
Charles Spurgeon said the following when he preached on the topic on August 18th, 1861.
There are two ways that Jesus could have entered into Jerusalem
He could enter as a King of Peace or He could enter as a King of War.

What would it mean to bring war to the Romans
The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and have my son Solomon ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.
When we think about war and our leaders - maybe we think about George W. Bush flying and landing on an aircraft carrier.

Introduction
How would we know if we had a new King of America?

It has been a 241 years since we have had a King, King George III was the last king of America.
It has been a long time since we have had a King, King George III was the last king of America.
Would we know what to look for if we had a king?
Maybe there are a few of you here today that remember the crowning of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937. Orville was 16 years old when the King was crowned.
Those of us born after 1937 which is most of us - have not seen a changing of the Monarchy of Britain.
So how would we know when a new king has been in place.
Would we know what it looks like if a new king was crowned?
What would we expect?
For the Jews - they were anticipating the Messiah - the King that would come against Rome, and Jesus’ followers thought that He would be that King.

To recognize Jesus as a King, we need to look at the Old Testament.
Today our text is - stand if you are able as we read this text.
Zechariah 9:9

2017 has been a tough year already. With the passing of Bea Losey, Don Kerbs, Jo Forester, and now Larry Shull

Your King is coming, with salvation, humble, and mounted on the foal of a donkey.
So when Jesus showed up riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, scripture was being fulfilled.
All four gospels have the account of Jesus entering into Jerusalem
John 12:12-15
On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.”
Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written,
“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”

Jesus entered Jerusalem as the King of Peace.
There will be a time when Jesus will ride a horse.
Revelation 19:11
And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.
Revelation 11
When Jesus returns He will not return as the King of Peace, but as the Judge on a white horse.
Scripture gives us two very different pictures of Jesus
Luke
After He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,
saying, “Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.
“If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ”
So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them.
As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
They said, “The Lord has need of it.”
They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it.
As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road.
As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,
shouting:
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord;
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”
Teacher, Rebuke Your disciples.
The crowd was praising Jesus - the Bible tells us they were shouting!
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
When was the last time you shouted praises to Jesus?
Would you rebuke someone who did?
Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”
I never want to be in the place where stones worship Jesus more than I do.
Zechariah 9:10
I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
And the horse from Jerusalem;
And the bow of war will be cut off.
And He will speak peace to the nations;
And His dominion will be from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.
Everything belongs to Jesus - every nation, every sea, every river to the ends of the earth. It’s all HIs.
Matthew 21:1-11
When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me.
“If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”
This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
“Say to the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold your King is coming to you,
Gentle, and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them,
and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats.
Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road.
The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting,
“Hosanna to the Son of David;
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;
Hosanna in the highest!”
When He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?”
And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.”
By looking at all the gospels we get the whole picture of the day Jesus entered into Jerusalem as the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
Matthew was written for the Jews
We learn one interesting fact in that is not found in the other three gospels - the colt had never been ridden.
Mark 11:1-11
John was written for the Gentiles
As they approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples,
and said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.
“If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ you say, ‘The Lord has need of it’; and immediately he will send it back here.”
They went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they untied it.
Some of the bystanders were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?”
They spoke to them just as Jesus had told them, and they gave them permission.
They brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it; and He sat on it.
And many spread their coats in the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields.
Those who went in front and those who followed were shouting:
“Hosanna!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David;
Hosanna in the highest!”
Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple; and after looking around at everything, He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.
This donkey was a holy donkey - set apart for Jesus a ride with a purpose, to bring in the King of Peace
Even today when you visit Israel you can ride a white donkey on the Mount of Olives - when I was there he called it the Jesus Taxi.
But the donkey that Jesus rode was not a taxi - it was a ride fit for a king
Conclusion
We may not know what a new King of England would ride in - maybe a Cadillac or a Mercedes, but we know that Jesus rode a donkey, the King of Peace.
One day He will return - when He does - it will be on a White Horse leading to Judgment and War
As we conclude and sing these last few hymns - let’s praise Him so that our church walls will not have to.
Jesus knew He was headed to the cross.
We know He is headed to the cross.
What is important is that Jesus beat death - He opened the door for us to have eternal life if we confess that we believe in Him and believe in our hearts He rose from the grave then we will be saved.
