Can you imagine for a moment the closest friend you have selling you away for money?
Betrayal is one of the most hurtful feelings we can experience as human beings and yet Jesus went through that feeling with one of his closest followers!
It says in Matthew 26:14–16: “Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?” And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.”
Judas negotiated a price. 30 pieces of silver in exchange for his best friend and Messiah to be crucified.
The compensation in silver was no random amount of money, but under Old Testament law we see that 30 pieces of silver was the compensation for the death of a slave!
I want you to search your heart this week leading up to Easter. Maybe you say to yourself, “Surely I wouldn’t betray Jesus like Judas did!”
But Jesus calls us to deny ourselves daily if we want to call ourselves true followers of Him.
Is there a repeated sin issue that your struggle with daily?
Is it lust? Substance abuse? Neglecting your time in the word?
What are your 30 pieces of silver that you betray Jesus with every day?
I encourage you if you feel lost Jesus died so that those who have lost hope, can find it in him!
