ROOTED NIGHT – PART 3

Closing the Gap: Turning Truth Into Life

Primary Scriptures

James 1:22
Matthew 7:24–27

WELCOME (3 minutes)

Good evening everyone.
It’s good to see you all tonight.
Over the last couple weeks we’ve been talking about something that most believers experience, but very few people actually talk about honestly.
We’ve been talking about the gap.
The gap between:
What we know about God and how we actually live day to day.
Because if we’re honest, most of us know a lot.
We know we should trust God. We know we should forgive. We know we should walk by faith.
But knowing something doesn’t automatically mean we live it.
And tonight we’re going to talk about something extremely practical:
How do we actually close that gap?

OPENING PRAYER (1 minute)

Father,
We thank You for this moment together.
We ask that You would bring clarity tonight.
Not just information, but understanding.
Help us see where truth needs to move from our heads into our lives.
And give us courage to grow.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

HOOK – INTERACTIVE (6 minutes)

Let’s start with something simple.
Raise your hand if you’ve ever done this before:
You heard a message… you felt inspired…
and you said:
“This week is going to be different.”
(Let people laugh)
And then Tuesday happens.
And suddenly… not so different.
Anyone been there?
That’s the gap.
Not between belief and unbelief.
But between belief and behavior.

Follow-up question

Let’s make this real.
What are some things people know they should do… but struggle to do consistently?
Call some out.
Examples people will say:
forgiveness
patience
prayer
trusting God
controlling anger
consistency
Exactly.
So the question becomes:
If we know truth… why is it so hard to live it?

FOUNDATION SCRIPTURE (3 minutes)

Let’s look at what Scripture says.

James 1:22

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
Notice something important.
The danger isn’t hearing truth.
The danger is stopping there.
Because hearing alone creates the illusion of growth.
Jesus says something similar.

Matthew 7:24–25

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Not the one who hears.
The one who hears and builds.

KINGDOM PRINCIPLE #1

Awareness Creates Alignment (10 minutes)

Nothing changes until something becomes clear.
Not vague.
Clear.
You have to recognize where the gap exists in your life.

Interactive reflection

Ask them:
Think for a moment.
Where is the biggest gap in your life right now?
Is it:
Trust? Consistency? Control? Fear? Forgiveness?
Let them reflect for 20 seconds.
Here’s the Kingdom principle:
What you refuse to acknowledge, you cannot transform.
The Kingdom always starts with light.
Light reveals.
And once something is revealed, it can be aligned.

Real-life example

Think about finances.
If someone refuses to look at their bank account…
nothing changes.
But the moment they face it honestly…
they can begin making different decisions.
The same is true spiritually.

KINGDOM PRINCIPLE #2

Practice Produces Transformation (12 minutes)

One of the biggest misunderstandings in Christianity is this:
People think hearing truth produces change.
But that’s not how transformation works.
Transformation comes through practice.

Interactive question

How many of you have ever tried learning something new?
Playing an instrument Working out Learning a language
Did watching videos make you good at it?
No.
Practice did.
The same thing happens spiritually.
You don’t become patient by hearing about patience.
You become patient by practicing patience when someone irritates you.
You don’t grow in trust when life is easy.
You grow in trust when uncertainty shows up.

Kingdom principle

Truth practiced becomes character.

KINGDOM PRINCIPLE #3

Small Decisions Shape Big Outcomes (10 minutes)

Most people think transformation requires dramatic moments.
But the Kingdom often works through small, consistent choices.
Daily decisions.

Example

Think about health.
No one becomes unhealthy overnight.
It happens through small repeated habits.
The same is true spiritually.
Your character is formed through repeated decisions.

Interactive moment

Ask:
What are small decisions that move someone closer to God?
Let people answer:
prayer
gratitude
honesty
forgiveness
obedience
Exactly.
Those small decisions become patterns.
Patterns become habits.
Habits shape identity.

KINGDOM PRINCIPLE #4

Environment Shapes Momentum (10 minutes)

One of the most overlooked realities of transformation is environment.
Who you are around.
What voices influence you.
What rhythms you build into your life.

Example

If someone wants to become healthy…
but surrounds themselves with unhealthy habits…
change becomes extremely difficult.
Environment matters.

Scripture

Hebrews 10:24–25
“Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works… not neglecting to meet together.”
The church is meant to be a formation environment.
We strengthen each other.
We encourage each other.
We keep each other aligned.

Interactive question

Ask:
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to drift when you isolate?
People will nod.
Exactly.
Isolation widens the gap.
Community helps close it.

KINGDOM PRINCIPLE #5

Grace Sustains Growth (8 minutes)

Another reason people stay stuck is because they think failure disqualifies them.
But growth is a process.
Not perfection.

Scripture

Philippians 1:6
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”
God is forming something in you over time.
There will be moments where you stumble.
But grace keeps the process moving forward.

Real-life example

Think about a child learning to walk.
They fall.
But falling doesn’t mean failure.
It’s part of the process.
Spiritual growth works the same way.

FINAL REFLECTION (7 minutes)

So tonight the question isn’t:
“What new truth did I learn?”
The question is:
What truth am I going to start practicing?
Because the gap closes through practice.
One decision at a time.
One moment of obedience.
One step of faith.
And over time…
Those decisions form a life that is rooted.
If you'd like, I can also help you create a powerful Part 4 finale for this series called:
“Becoming the Church Jesus Is Building.”
That one will land the whole journey and cast vision for the future of the community.
