Joel 2:21–27

From Desolation to Restoration

Big Idea

When God's people repent, God restores the blessings of the covenant and renews His presence among them.

Introduction

Joel has described devastating covenant judgment.
Locust plague Drought Famine
The effects spread across the whole land.
Joel 1 describes:
• Land mourning (1:10) • Animals groaning (1:18) • Joy cut off from God's people (1:12)
This was covenant judgment.
But in Joel 2:12–17 God called His people to repent.
Then came the turning point.
Joel 2:18
“The LORD became jealous for His land and had pity on His people.”
Now God begins describing restoration.
But Joel does something very intentional.
The restoration unfolds in the same order as creation.
Genesis creation order:
1️⃣ Land / vegetation 2️⃣ Living creatures 3️⃣ Humanity
Joel follows the same pattern.
1️⃣ Land restored 2️⃣ Animals restored 3️⃣ People restored 4️⃣ Culminating in God's presence among His people
Earlier judgment looked like creation unraveling.
Now repentance leads to creation being restored.

I. The Land Restored (21)

Joel 2:21 ESV
“Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things!
Earlier:
Joel 1:10 ESV
The fields are destroyed, the ground mourns, because the grain is destroyed, the wine dries up, the oil languishes.
Now the land is told:
Fear not. Rejoice.
The devastation is ending.
Joel 2:22 ESV
Fear not, you beasts of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit; the fig tree and vine give their full yield.
“The pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit; the fig tree and vine give their full yield.”
Vegetation returns.
The land that mourned now flourishes again.

II. The Creatures Restored (22)

Joel now turns to the animals.
Joel 2:22 ESV
Fear not, you beasts of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit; the fig tree and vine give their full yield.
Earlier:
Joel 1:18 ESV
How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed because there is no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep suffer.
The animals suffered because the land was barren.
Now the pastures are green again.
Provision returns.
Animals that once groaned now thrive again.
Creation is being restored step by step.

III. The People Restored (23–26)

Now Joel turns to the covenant people.
Joel 2:23 ESV
“Be glad, O children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given the early rain for your vindication; he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the latter rain, as before.
The restoration now reaches God's people.
God restores the rain.
“Early rain and latter rain.”
Rain was essential for life in Israel.
Without rain:
• Crops fail • Famine follows
Rain was also a covenant blessing.
Deuteronomy 28 promised rain for obedience.
Now that blessing returns.
Joel 2:24 ESV
“The threshing floors shall be full of grain; the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
Abundance replaces devastation.

Restoration of the Years

Joel 2:25 ESV
I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you.
Important detail:
Joel 2:25 ESV
my great army, which I sent among you.
The locusts were not random.
They were God's instrument of judgment.
But now the same God who sent judgment promises restoration.
Years of devastation replaced with years of blessing.

The Result

Joel 2:26 ESV
“You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.
Provision restored.
Restoration leads to worship.

IV. The Presence Restored (27)

The passage now reaches its climax.
Joel 2:27 ESV
You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God and there is none else. And my people shall never again be put to shame.
The ultimate blessing is not the harvest.
The ultimate blessing is God's presence.
God dwelling among His people.
Joel ends with this promise:
“My people shall never again be put to shame.”
The shame of judgment is removed.
God restores His people and renews His covenant relationship with them.

Conclusion

Joel shows a complete reversal.
Land restored Animals restored People restored
Creation begins to flourish again.
But the restoration does not stop there.
In the beginning God formed Adam from the dust.
Genesis 2:7 ESV
then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Adam lived because God breathed life into him.
Joel says that after restoring His people, God will pour out His Spirit — His ruaḥ.
Just as God breathed life into Adam at creation, God will pour out His Spirit to bring life and renewal to His people.
The restoration of the land prepares for something even greater:
life given by the Spirit of God.
