Flexible vs. The Flex: Flexing the Threat of Culture (Pergamum)
Flexible vs. The Flex: Flexing the Threat of Culture (Pergamum)
(Revelation 2:12–17)
I. INTRODUCTION — THE SET UP
I. INTRODUCTION — THE SET UP
The Tension: Tonight we’re continuing this series where we’ve been moving from FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) to Faith Over My Opinions. If you’ve been here, you know the tension. Culture repeats a message over and over: "If you want to survive, if you want to succeed, if you want people to like you... you have to be flexible." Flexible with your morals. Flexible with your convictions. Flexible with your standards. Culture says you have to bend a little bit depending on the room you walk into.
The Pivot: But Jesus is saying something completely different tonight. He comes out of the gate with absolute authority. But before we can understand what He is calling us to do, it's up to you to figure out three key components tonight:
1. Who actually has the power? Is it culture, or is it Christ?
2. Who truly sees what you are up against? Is Jesus distant, or does He know exactly how dark your environment is?
3. What is the actual truth versus a toxic, false teaching?
The Roadmap: Once we figure that out, we can listen to what Jesus is wanting us to do in order to use His power to overcome this threat of culture. Let's look at the ancient city of Pergamum.
II. THE POWER CHECK — THE SWORD (Revelation 2:12)
II. THE POWER CHECK — THE SWORD (Revelation 2:12)
History First: Look at Revelation 2:12. Jesus says, "These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword." Why did He say that to them? Because Pergamum was the capital city of the Roman province. And the Roman governor who lived there had a very specific authority called the ius gladii—"The Right of the Sword." Rome had the legal right to execute people on the spot. Culture held the ultimate physical power. But Jesus steps in and says, "I'm sorry you think you have a sword that cuts things... I am the one with the ultimate sword."
The Pivot: Even today, what Jesus said in this letter to Pergamum applies to you because... culture still tries to wield a sword. If you aren't flexible, they threaten to cancel you. They threaten to cut you off or execute your social life. But Jesus doesn't need a physical piece of metal. His words execute His purpose. His Word is the ultimate authority over your life, not culture's opinions. He is the final judge.
III. THE ENVIRONMENT CHECK — SATAN’S THRONE (Revelation 2:13)
III. THE ENVIRONMENT CHECK — SATAN’S THRONE (Revelation 2:13)
History First: Look at Revelation 2:13. Jesus says, "I know where you live—where Satan has his throne." In Pergamum, right in the center of the city, there was a massive 40-foot altar to Zeus that looked exactly like a giant throne. They also had temples filled with snakes dedicated to the god of healing. It was one of the darkest, most oppressive spiritual environments in the ancient world. Jesus looked at them and said, "I see exactly where you are forced to live."
The Pivot: Even today, what Jesus said in this letter to Pergamum applies to you because... you might be wondering if Jesus knows what it's like to walk the hallways of your school or scroll through your toxic feed. He does. He isn't distant. He validates your struggle and sees the intense pressure you are under to be "flexible" and just blend in.
IV. THE INFLUENCE CHECK — THE FALSE TEACHING (Revelation 2:14–15)
IV. THE INFLUENCE CHECK — THE FALSE TEACHING (Revelation 2:14–15)
History First: Look at Revelation 2:14-15. Jesus addresses the teaching of Balaam and the Nicolaitans. In the Old Testament, since Balaam couldn't curse God's people from the outside, he corrupted them from the inside. The Nicolaitans took that same spirit and taught the church in Pergamum: "Your spirit is saved, so what you do with your body doesn't matter. Go to the pagan feasts. Join the wild parties. Blend in. Be flexible." They were teaching compromise disguised as freedom.
The Pivot: Even today, what Jesus said in this letter to Pergamum applies to you because... culture still teaches that your faith shouldn't affect your lifestyle.
The Cook Out Illustration: Imagine pulling into the Cook Out drive-thru. Your friend orders a Big Double burger, a corn dog, chicken nuggets, and a massive chocolate shake... and then leans toward the speaker and says, "But make the drink a Diet Coke, I'm watching my weight." You cannot gorge yourself on 4,000 calories of culture's junk food (gossip, impurity, blending in) all week and expect a "Diet Coke" prayer on Sunday to fix it. Jesus isn't interested in a little religious adjustment. He wants the whole temple.
V. THE VIGILANCE PROTOCOL — THREE WAYS TO STAND STRONG
V. THE VIGILANCE PROTOCOL — THREE WAYS TO STAND STRONG
Now that we know who holds the power, we know what Jesus wants us to do to overcome the threat of culture. We take three steps:
1. FILTER the Noise: * (Play the YouTube Short of the person twisting scripture, claiming the Bible is "subjective" and shouldn't be used to call out objective reality).
The Fact Check: This is modern-day Nicolaitan teaching! They want to make the truth "flexible" so you don't offend anyone. But you have to filter that noise through the ultimate sword. Slam the FACT CHECK stamp here! The Bible isn't subjective; it is the absolute, objective truth. If it doesn't align with God's Word, reject it.
2. FIGHT or FLEE the Environment: Since Jesus knows exactly how dark your environment is, you need wisdom. Sometimes your faith calls you to FIGHT. Stand your ground. Defend your convictions. But sometimes, when the party turns dark or the group chat gets toxic, the holiest, strongest thing you can do is hit the exit button and FLEE.
3. FILL Up on the Real: You cannot survive on Diet Coke religion. Fill up on the real presence of Jesus so the world's junk food loses its appeal.
VI. THE CLIMAX — THE WHITE STONE (Revelation 2:17)
VI. THE CLIMAX — THE WHITE STONE (Revelation 2:17)
The Hidden Manna: Jesus finishes with a promise. If you resist compromise, He will give you "Hidden Manna"—a deep relationship with Him that fills the emptiness culture never can.
The VIP Pass: And then He promises a White Stone. In Pergamum, a white stone was a VIP pass to exclusive, immoral, "anything goes" parties. It was an invitation to your darkest desires.
The Jesus Flip: Jesus flips the meaning. He says, "I’m offering you a different white stone tonight. Not a VIP pass to impurity, but a VIP pass of Purity."
The Altar Call: You cannot hold culture's dirty VIP pass in one hand and Jesus' pure white stone in the other. At some point, you have to choose. If you are ready to trade FOMO for Faith Over Opinions, step out of your seat. Come grab a white stone. Keep it in your pocket this week to remind you: Refusing to compromise your purity isn't stubbornness. It is the ultimate FLEX.
