Simplified Faithfulness.
Simplified Faithfulness.
INTRIGUE:
Some times life can leave us in a daze. It seems overwhelming.
Have you noticed how many people today say the same thing:
“Life just feels heavy.”
“Everything feels overwhelming.”
Sometimes we assume the reason is just busyness, but there’s often something deeper going on. Counselor and author Mike Foster suggests that every human heart is asking one core question — what he calls a primal question. When that question goes unanswered, life starts to feel incredibly hard.
For some people, the question is “Am I safe?”
And when the world feels chaotic — the economy shifts, the news cycle never stops, technology changes everything overnight — their nervous system is constantly on alert. They’re not just tired… they’re trying to figure out if the ground beneath them is stable.
For others, the question is “Am I secure?”
When the cost of living rises, careers feel uncertain, and even relationships feel fragile, people begin to wonder if anything in life is truly dependable.
Some people are asking “Am I loved?”
We live in the most digitally connected generation in history, yet loneliness is everywhere. You can have hundreds of online connections and still go to bed at night wondering if anyone really knows you.
And others are asking “Do I have purpose?”
They’re busy — incredibly busy — but they quietly wonder if any of it actually matters.
Constant exposure to global crises through news and social media
The rising cost of living and long-term financial pressure
Retirement and savings uncertainty
Shallow online relationships replacing embodied friendships
Families and communities being geographically scattered
Social comparison on social media fueling feelings of rejection or inadequacy
So when someone says, “Life feels overwhelming,” they may not just be talking about their schedule. They may be carrying a deeper question in their heart.
Am I safe?
Am I secure?
Am I loved?
Do I matter?
And the good news of the gospel is that God answers every one of those questions.
In Christ, we are safe in the Father’s care.
In Christ, we are secure in His promises.
In Christ, we are deeply loved.
And in Christ, our lives have eternal purpose.
Which means the deepest anxieties of the human heart are not ultimately solved by circumstances — they are answered by relationship with God.
Im a big proponent of simple. Not in a way that ignores complexity or nuance, but in a way the brings such clarity that you start to see straight through the fog and dizziness.
I have a phrase I use for my life and leadership around the church - simplify the problem, don’t complicate the solution.
I think that why i love the carnivore diet.
It’s why i love Apple products.
It’s why I’m a big believer in the primal question.
Deuteronomy is the remix and the law and covenant God gave them 38+ years before at Mt Sinai. This was a new generation and Moses had skeptical hope they’d follow through on these commands.
When one generation fumbles, God will bring another one along to pick-up where they left off.
Deuteronomy is Moses trying to remind them of the simplicity of it all:
God is worthy of your life, so give Him your life.
Jesus simplified Deuteronomy for us.
Mark 12:30–31 “30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.”
Mark 12:30–31 “30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.”
…jesus wasn’t redefining all we need to do, just clarifying the motivation of all the commands. (see the sermon on the mount)
…jesus wasn’t reducing; He was reframing
…Eph 4:17-5:33 is Paul’s version of Deuteronomy.
INTERPRET:
God wants us to flourish. (Deut. 6:1-3;10-12)
God wants us to flourish. (Deut. 6:1-3;10-12)
We must first acknowledge, that the life we are curating, apart from God, is not ultimately bringing that beauty.
We must also acknowledge, that as people who proclaim God of the Bible as our GOD, we don’t always experience that abundant life.
Love God.
worship Him alone, trust in Him fully.
He’s not trying to complicate your life.
God wants us to remember, by passing it along. (Deut 6:4-9;20-23)
God wants us to remember, by passing it along. (Deut 6:4-9;20-23)
share something, you’re exponentially more likely to remember it.
Remember WHY you follow God and surrender to Him.
we forget because we stay quiet…share what god is doing for shame will show-up.
most of us stay silent about success and failure because we don’t want to hypocrite…but we misunderstand what hypocrisy is in reality.
When your kids ask…if they don’t ask, it may be because they can’t see it.
It super challenging to raise Christ-centered kids if your kids are the center of your life.
Whatever is optional in this season, eventually becomes obsolete in the next. That is the warning Moses is giving.
drive time, meal time, bed time, morning time… your life the living epistle your kids read.

Teach your kids…God’s ways.
when you teach them more about sports than the Holy Spirit - you missed the assignment.
when you confuse their behavior/achievements with their identity/value - you missed the assignment.
when you teach your kids to save for buying things they want, but never how to give generously - you’re missing some of the assignment
when you model church is an event/program you attend rather than a people you are baptized into - you missed the assignment.
When your kids know more about your work ethic than the faith you claim to have - you’ve missed the assignment.
recently my oldest interviewed for a college assignment. for over 40 minutes she asked question about my parenting. Nothing like doing an autopsy on your parenting with your adult children.
God wants us to Fear the Lord and Follow His commands faithfully, which leads us to a Flourishing life. (Deut. 6:1-4; 24-25)
God wants us to Fear the Lord and Follow His commands faithfully, which leads us to a Flourishing life. (Deut. 6:1-4; 24-25)
Listen carefullly - 73x in Deut.
LISTEN = hear and respond or OBEY
LOVE = emotion and decision or DEVOTION (It’s about a decision of wholehearted devotion to God that involves your will and your emotions, your mind and your heart).
loyalty and love go together. So to love with out loyalty can lead the selfish lawlessness. To listen but not love, you end up living with legalism.
To fear is to give awe and fear losing His face and favor in our life. Devotion or love.
To follow is to obey. Listen or live with loyalty.
INTEGRATE:
Cultivate God-honoring friendships with people who fear the Lord and follow His commands.
Cultivate God-honoring friendships with people who fear the Lord and follow His commands.
Deut. 6:24-25...The LORD commanded US to follow and fear Him.
Fearing God and Following Through is easier with rich, spiritual friendships.
You don’t need to know everyone, and everyone doesn’t need to know you..but everyone needs to be known by others.
Spiritual friendships are marked by depth, vulnerability, and commitment to transformation.
Depth: Conversations go beyond surface-level topics to include our life with God, pain, suffering, and growth.
Vulnerability: Sharing both strengths and weaknesses through confession and listening.
Hypocrisy is pretending or play acting. It’s not the opposite of perfection. The opposite of hypocrisy is transparency and vulnerability.
No one shames a toddler for practicing to walk. Yet we do that with Christians who are progressing, call it pretending or hypocrisy.
Commitment to Transformation: A shared vow to lifelong spiritual growth and accountability.
If you want friends, show yourself friendly. You cultivate them.
Love His people.
Love Him.
it takes courage to resist the ways of the world.
Courage grows in community
Shame is silenced in the company of others.
Shame is silenced in our vulnerability.
THE LORD WHO IS AMONG YOU (all).
MASSAH = testing/temptian or veiling.
water from the rock
veiled understanding of Jesus (2 Cor. 3)
veiled knowledge of God’s presence when people gather.
gathering with others to pursue God is a the MASSAH we must lift and have revelation of.
Matt 18:20 - For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them.
where two or three are gathered HE is present…where spirit of Lord is there is freedom...sense of freedom is burden and shame lifting so we can be bold and courageous to follow Faithfulfully..to fear the Lord and follow His commands.
freedom from friendship…double meaning worth exploring; one leads to individualism, the other leads to integrity of faith.
The test God is giving you, do you believe it? If you believe it and value it, you prioritize it in your obedience.
