Steadfast Together (1 Cor. 15:58)

Introduction

As you celebrate your church anniversary, you celebrate a new season sa church life inyo. Meron kayong bagong pastor na itinalaga ng Diyos to lead your church to be more biblically healthy for God’s glory. Naalala ko tuloy nung bago pa lang ako na pastor sa church namin. That’s 16 years ago, 2009. Ang tema yata namin nun ay “Move Forward.” 27 pa lang ako during that time. May ilang families din na umalis sa church nun. Ang iba lumipat ng ibang church. Yung iba umalis because of conflicts. Yung iba dahil ayaw sa naging desisyon ng church na bata pa ang kuning pastor. Naging okay rin naman eventually yung pag-alis nila. Mas nagkaisa ang church. At para sa kanila, ang mahalaga ay nagpapatuloy sila sa pananampalataya. Pero may mga umaalis talaga sa church na hindi na nagpapatuloy. Nakakalungkot. Ayaw naman talaga natin na may aalis sa church. Pero ang mas nakalulungkot, hindi lang sila lalayo sa church, lalayo pa sila sa Panginoon.

Sa church din ninyo, maybe masasabi ninyo na tapos na ang bagyo, makakamove-on na lahat. Pero God does not promise us na magiging okay na ang lahat. We hope for better days. Pero we don’t know, may mga pagdadaanan talaga tayo—individually and corporately—na masusubok kung gaano katatag ang pananampalataya natin, masusubok ang pagmamahal natin sa Panginoon. Will we keep holding on to the faith? Will we keep loving our church? Kapag meron nang mga tensions dahil sa mga changes na ini-implement sa church. Kapag meron kang hindi nakakasundo. Kapag merong dinidisiplina sa church at may mga negative reactions siyempre. Mahirap talaga ‘yan.

Kaya appropriate for all seasons ng church life natin itong sinabi ni Paul sa 1 Corinthians 15:58. Nasa dulo na siya, almost, ng kanyang sulat. Ang dami na niyang nasabi. Before yung ilang mga instructions sa chapter 16, ito yung final exhortation niya sa kanila, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” / “Kaya nga, mga minamahal kong kapatid, magpakatatag kayo at huwag matinag. Maging masipag kayo palagi sa paglilingkod sa Panginoon, dahil alam ninyong hindi masasayang ang inyong pagpapagal para sa kanya” (MBB).

Will answer three questions based sa verse na ‘to:

Who needs to be steadfast together? Para kanino ang exhortation na ‘to?

What does ito mean to be steadfast together? Ano ang gusto ng Diyos para sa atin sa exhortation na ‘to?

How will we remain steadfast together? Anu-ano ang paraan para matupad sa buhay natin ang exhortation na ‘to?

Who Needs to be Steadfast Together?

Sino ba ang sinulatan ni Pablo ng exhortation na ‘to?

“…my beloved brothers” / “mga minamahal kong kapatid”

Term of endearment ‘yan para sa kanila. Maiintidihan natin kung bakit ganyan ang affection ni Paul sa kanila dahil siya ang nagmisyon sa Corinto at namalagi ng ilang panahon para turuan sila. Kaya paulit-ulit ‘yan sa letter niya, “Brothers,” (1 Cor. 1:10, 11, 26; 15:1). Ganito sabi niya sa simula kung sino ang sinulatan niya, 1 Corinthians 1:2, “To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours.” So, itong exhortation na ‘to ay para sa church sa Corinth. At dahil ito ay salita ng Diyos para sa ating lahat, ito rin ay para sa church sa Calulut. To be more specific, ano ang identity ng church na ‘to?

Ang church na binubuo ng mga mananampalataya.

Sila yung tumatawag sa pangalan ng Panginoon, “call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 1:2). Brothers sila, kapatid kay Cristo, kapwa mananampalataya. They received the gospel (1 Cor. 15:1). So, Paul was assuming na mga Kristiyano ang kausap niya. Kaya mahalaga ang church membership. Bago kasi natin tanggapin na miyembro ang isang taong nagsasabing Kristiyano sila, kinaklaro muna natin ang gospel sa kanila. Hindi tayo basta nag-aassume lang. Imposible kasi na maging steadfast tayo together kung maraming mga members ng church ay unregenerate, o hindi pala totoong mga believers. At kahit nga sa atin na mga true believers, aminin natin na ang pananampalataya natin ay hindi ganun katatag all the time. So we need this exhortation to be steadfast together. Heto naman yung pangalawang bahagi ng identity ng church:

Ang church na binubuo ng mga makasalanan.

Bagamat totoo na sinabi ni Paul sa kanila na sila ay “those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints” (1 Cor 1:2), sila rin ay mga makasalanan pa. Hindi ito dalawang grupo sa church, na ang iba ay saints, ang iba ay sinners. No, lahat ay saints/sinners. Notorious nga ang reputasyon ng Corinthian church. Kapag nakarinig ka ng mga marites na nag-uusap-usap tungkol sa church nila ganito ang maririnig mo: “Ay naku, yung church na ‘yan, nag-aaway-away. May mayayabang, akala mo kung sino, marami raw siyang spiritual gifts. Yung isang member naman nila, may kinakasama na hindi naman niya asawa. Tapos parang okay lang sa church yun. Naku. May nagdedemandahan pa. May nalalasing din kapag nagkakainan sila. Tapos kapag worship service nila, parang ang gulo-gulo.” Well, hindi man ganyan eksakto ang mga nangyayari sa church ninyo, alam natin lahat tayo ay nagkakasala pa rin. Some are struggling with porn. Yung iba naiinis kapag nakikita o naaalala man lang yung ibang members. Nandun pa rin ang pride, self-righteousness, materialism, at kung anu-ano pang kasalanan. Lahat tayo, madali tayong matangay ng kasalanan. We are believers still struggling in our faith. We are saints and sinners in the process of sanctification. That is why we need the exhortation to be steadfast together. No matter how we struggle, eto naman ang mahalagang maalala natin tungkol sa church.

Ang church na binubuo ng mga minamahal.

Sabi ni Paul, “My beloved brothers.” Paulit-ulit si Paul sa letter niya referring to them as “brothers,” “my brothers.” Pero ito lang yung only time he used this phrase, “my beloved brothers,” sa letter. He wants to let them know, with all their faults and messiness, they are loved. Loved by Paul, kaya nga siya sumulat ng mahaba sa kanila. Loved by God siyempre, kasi yun naman ang ugat ng pag-ibig ni Paul para sa kanila, at sa calling natin na mahalin ang bawat isa. Kaya nga merong chapter 13 about love sa letter niya, their disordered loves ang isang ugat kaya nagiging magulo sa church nila. We still struggle to love. Madaling mahalin kung sino yung mga mababait na members. Paano yung matigas ang ulo, paano yung nakasakit sa ‘yo, paano yung mahirap mahalin? We need God’s steadfast love for us to be steadfast in loving one another.

So, para kanino ang exhortation ni Paul? Para sa church na binubuo ng mga mananampalatayang makasalanan pa rin pero patuloy na minamahal ng Diyos. Tayong lahat ‘yan na nakay Cristo.

What Does It Mean to be Steadfast Together?

At isang pruweba ng pag-ibig ng Diyos para sa atin ay ang gawa ng Diyos in supplying what we need, giving us words we need to hear so that we will remain steadfast together. Now, what does that mean?

“…be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…” / “magpakatatag kayo at huwag matinag. Maging masipag kayo palagi sa paglilingkod sa Panginoon”

Steadfast, immovable. Standing firm, kahit ano ang mangyari sa paligid. Isipin mo ang guwardiya sa Luneta, nananatiling nakatayo, immovable. O isang bahay na nananatiling nakatayo kahit bumagyo at bumaha. Or a couple holding on to each other, no matter what. Yan ang di-matitinag na commitment na siyang ibig sabihin ng pagiging steadfast. At merong tatlong commitments ‘yan. Una…

Merong di-matitinag na commitment sa gospel.

1 Corinthians 15:1–2, “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.” Not to believe in vain, na sa salita lang. Hindi Kristiyano sa pangalan lang o sa simula lang. Hindi lang napakinggan ang gospel at naniwala sa facts of the gospel, but holding fast to the word.

Ano yung gospel na yun? 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,” Tungkol sa ginawa ni Cristo, hindi sa ginawa natin, believing na sapat ng ginawa ni Cristo sa krus for our forgiveness, acceptance with God, righteousness. 1 Corinthians 1:30 “And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption.”

Lalo na’t iba-ibang versions ng gospel ang meron ngayon. Prosperity gospel. Self-help, moralistic gospel. Other teachings and practices detracting us from the centrality of Christ.

So, cling to the gospel. Cling to Christ.

Merong di-matitinag na commitment sa church.

The longer I pastor, the more I am convinced of the inseparability of the gospel and the church. Of course, Christ and his work—that’s the gospel. The church is not the gospel, but an implication of the gospel. Kung may gospel, merong church, hindi pwedeng wala. Steadfast in the gospel together.

Corinth. Difference now. Madaling lumipat ng church. Yes, the church is bigger than our own local churches, but there is a great need to commit to one local church for years. Imagine: kung palipat-lipat ng church. Getting to know one local church paulit-ulit, and the church getting to know you. Does that church believe the same gospel? And the church asking you, do you believe the same gospel? The call to commit to one local church is a call to have a covenant relationship (church membership) with brothers and sisters who confess the same gospel and who commit their lives to each other, to help them grow deeper into the gospel.

Paul to Corinthians: appeal to address their divisions, appeal to get them to find their agreement in the gospel and how to use their gifts to build up the body of Christ. 1 Cor. 12 about being members of the body. Imagine body parts disconnected with the body? Looks weird? No, dead. You separate the body from the Head, Christ, that church will die. You separate yourself from the body, delikado.

A call to be steadfast, immovable, stand firm in the gospel includes the goal to stay committed to the local church. A commitment that says, “Kahit masaktan ako ng ibang member, hindi ako basta-basta aalis, as long as the church is striving to be faithful to the gospel. Kahit meron akong hindi magustuhan sa leadership style ng pastor ko, hindi ako basta-basta aalis, as long as our pastors are striving to be faithful in preaching the gospel and helping the church achieve unity and purity consistent with the gospel.”

Merong di-matitinag na commitment sa ministry.

Easy for some Christians to decide to leave their churches kapag hindi nila nakukuha yung ineexpect nila sa church. But if you have a different mindset, that of serving, helping, kapag meron kang nakita na messiness sa church, pagkukulang ng iba, immaturities sa iba, instead of leaving, you ask, “How can I help?” That’s commitment sa ministry.

“Always abounding in the work of the Lord.” Not primarily our work, but work of the Lord. “We are God’s fellow workers” (1 Cor. 3:9). In ministry, may trabaho, pero lahat ay nakapailalim under the work of the Lord. Gospel ministry, in service of the gospel. Sa church membership, merong trabaho ang church to affirm kung sino ang tunay na naniniwala sa gospel. Sa preaching, may trabaho ang church (hindi lang ang pastor) to make sure na gospel at gospel-centered ang naipapangaral sa church. Sa church discipline, merong trabaho ang church na sawayin, ituwid ang nagkakasala, those who are living lives na inconsistent sa gospel that we profess. hindi lang ‘yan trabaho ng elders. Sa discipleship, merong trabaho ang church na sanayin ang bawat isa sa pagsunod kay Cristo sa lahat ng bahagi ng buhay nila. Sa evangelism and missions, may trabaho ang church na dalhin ang gospel na ‘to sa mga unbelievers, and to the nations.

And if work of the Lord, calls for commitment, “Always abounding.” About time and quality. Hindi Lang sa loob ng church or sa mga formal ministries ng church. Always dala-dala natin ang gospel, sa bahay, sa school, sa workplace, everywhere. We don’t just speak the gospel, with our lives we lend credence to the gospel we preach. So much is at stake, that is why we are to be always abounding in gospel ministry. Hindi yung we pour out our lives in pursuing our own ambitions, in pursuing worldly riches and comforts, but giving our lives for the sake of Christ.

This is what it means to be steadfast together: di matitinag na commitment sa gospel, sa church, at sa gospel ministry. Now, that is not so easy, when we’re dealing with our hearts so prone to wander, prone to leave the God I love. Not so easy, when we’re buffeted with so many things going on around us, some things can feel so overwhelming.

We need motivations, rock-solid motivations to keep going. So next and last question:

How will We Remain Steadfast Together?

Paano nga ba? Ang sagot ay nasa una at huling bahagi ng teksto natin:

“Therefore…knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” / “Kaya nga, mga minamahal kong kapatid, magpakatatag kayo at huwag matinag. Maging masipag kayo palagi sa paglilingkod sa Panginoon, dahil alam ninyong hindi masasayang ang inyong pagpapagal para sa kanya” (MBB).

Ang utos na magpakatatag at huwag matinag ay pwedeng maging nice-sounding words, pero walang power to effect what it commands kung wala yung “therefore” sa simula. Bakit? It connects verse 58 sa sinasabi ni Pablo simula pa sa verse 1. So, paano tayo mananatiling nakatayo? Heto ang unang sagot:

Sa pamamagitan ng pag-alala sa natapos nang ginawa ni Cristo.

1 Corinthians 15:1–3 “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received…” Then he talked about the gospel event: Christ died for our sins…then Christ rose from the dead. Alam na naman nila, pero bakit niya ipinapaalala? Kasi nakakalimutan natin, kasi kailangan nating alalahanin.

Hindi lang ito gospel na tinanggap nila, ito rin yung gospel na tinatayuan nila at makakatulong sa kanila para manatiling nakatayo, “in which you stand.” Hindi lang ito yung gospel na nagligtas sa kanila (referring to our regeneration, conversion, justification), kundi yung gospel na patuloy na nagliligtas sa kanila, “by which you are being saved,” referring to our sanctification and perseverance in the faith. Kailangan natin ang gospel hindi lang sa simula ng buhay Kristiyano, kundi araw-araw hanggang sa dulo. Dapat nating itrato ang gospel hindi lang bilang mensahe na ipinipreach natin sa iba, kundi dapat din nating pakinggan at ipreach sa sarili natin. Madali tayong panghinaan ng loob sa gospel ministry dahil hindi natin pinapakinggan yung gospel na pinpreach natin sa iba.

So, when you are discouraged o tempted to quit, remember the gospel. Kapag walang nakakapansin ng ginagawa mo, remember the gospel. Kapag may nakasakit sa ‘yo, remember the gospel. And for us leaders, we must facilitate our ministries in such a way na explicitly naririnig ang gospel hindi lang sa evangelism ng mga unbelievers, kundi pati na rin sa preaching, sa singing, sa Lord’s Supper, sa prayers, sa discipleship, sa counseling, sa ordinary conversations. The gospel must so saturate the life of our church. We will not be steadfast together kung wala ang gospel. We will just be building our lives and our ministries on sinking sand.

So, totoo ngang ang gospel ay past event. Pero ang biyaya ng Diyos ay dumadaloy sa atin in the present kapag malinaw na naririnig ang gospel. So, this is the second answer kung paano tayo magiging steadfast together.

Sa pamamagitan ng pagtitiwala sa nagpapatuloy na biyaya ng Diyos.

“Dahil alam ninyong hindi masasayang ang inyong pagpapagal para sa kanya.” Alam na natin ang kailangan natin. Kailangan lang nating alalahanin palagi kung ano yung alam na natin. That is the gospel of God’s grace. Yung “pagpapagal para sa kanya” ay literally, “in the Lord your labor.” Ibig sabihin, ang context ng mga pagsisikap natin sa gospel ministry ay “in the Lord.” So yung “work of the Lord” ay magagawa lang natin “in the Lord.” Meaning, in union with Christ. Nakakabit tayo kay Cristo. At ang biyaya, ang tulong, ang lakas, ang karunungan, ang tapang, ang lahat ng kailangan natin ay dumadaloy in union with Christ. John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” At dahil nakakabit Tayo kay Cristo, we can do everything na gusto ng Diyos na gawin natin, we can be steadfast together kapag tayo ay nakakabit kay Cristo. Kaya nga sabi ni Paul, 1 Corinthians 15:10 “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.” Paano siya nakapagtrabaho nang mabuti, masipag, hindi natitinag, at nagpapatuloy hanggang kamatayan? Sa pamamagitan ng biyaya ng Diyos. How can we be steadfast together? Sa pamamagitan din ng biyaya ng Diyos. ‘Wag na ‘wag nating tatangkaing gawin ang ministeryong ipinagkatiwala sa atin ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng sarili nating lakas. We must never boast on our own limited human resources. 1 Corinthians 1:31 “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Heto naman ang ikatlong sagot:

Sa pamamagitan ng pagtanaw sa karangalang naghihintay sa atin sa pagbabalik ni Cristo.

Nasa verse 58 ba yan? Ang sabi ni Paul, hindi masasayang ang pagpapagal natin. Paanong hindi masasayang? Totoo namang na-eencourage tayong magpatuloy kapag maganda ang results ng ministry natin. Dumami ang members. Maraming naging sabik sa pag-aaral ng salita ng Diyos. Nare-reconcile ang mga magkaaway. Marami ang nagse-share ng gospel. Nagiging more biblically healthy ang church. Ginagamit naman talaga ni Lord ‘yan to motivate us to move forward. Pero paano kung hindi nangyayari ang mga ‘yan? Pinanghihinaan kasi tayo ng loob kapag parang walang resulta yung ginagawa natin. Kapag kumonti pa ang members sa halip na dumami. Kapag sa dami ng efforts at time na binuhos mo sa evangelism, wala man lang kahit isa na na-convert. Kapag yung dinidisciple mo hindi na nagpakita sa church. That can really be deflating.

Pero, ang problema, napakashortsighted natin. Marami kasing ginagawa ang Diyos na hindi natin nakikita. O kaya, hindi pa natin nakikita at gusto niya na tanawin natin. Ano yun? ‘Yan ang tinalakay ni Pablo sa kahabaan ng chapter 15. Tungkol sa resurrection ni Cristo na siyang guarantee of our future resurrection. Sabi niya, kung hindi nabuhay si Cristo, sayang ang pananampalataya natin, umaasa tayo sa wala, balewala lahat ng ginagawa natin sa ministry. Pero dahil totoong nabuhay si Cristo, a glorious future is awaiting us, the glory of our resurrection, of spending eternity with Christ. Walang anumang sakit, broken relationships, heartaches, ang makatutumbas sa glorious future awaiting us sa muling pagbabalik ni Cristo. So take heart. Look to Christ everyday. Look forward to his return. ‘Yan ang hope natin, ‘yan ang motivation na kailangan natin for our church to remain steadfast together. Walang sayang, walang tapon, sa buhay na ibinuhos para kay Cristo na nagbigay ng kanyang buhay para sa atin.

Conclusion

Now, is the church better after 16 years? I think so. Does that make that easier? Absolutely not. Kahit sa efforts natin na maging healthy at gospel-centered ang church, may aalis at aalis talaga. May aalis pa rin. Leader resigned from membership, to go to a different ministry direction. Basta nagpapatuloy. Sabi ko, 1 Cor. 15:58. Couples separating, to be removed next week sa membership meeting. Elders, and hopefully the whole church, magkaisa na gawin kung ano ang gusto ng Diyos na gawin namin, for the sake of the gospel, for the sake of the church, for the sake of the glory of God higit sa lahat.

How about you? How about your church? Hoping for better days. But storms may come that will shake your faith in the gospel, that will threaten your love for the church, na madiscourage na in doing the ministry, that will tempt you na umayaw na sa church, or worse, to walk away from the Lord. Listen to 1 Cor 15:58.
