Isaiah 53:3–5 KJV 1900
3 He is despised and rejected of men; A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: And we hid as it were our faces from him; He was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.
We live in a world filled with pain.
Poverty. Disease. Broken homes. Broken hearts. Death.
Many people ask:
“If God is good, why does He allow pain?”
While we may not always understand why pain exists, the life of Jesus proves something powerful:
God understands our pain because Jesus experienced it.
Isaiah said He was “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.”

1. The Pain He Experienced

Jesus experienced real human pain.
Isaiah 53:3 says He was “despised and rejected of men.”
He felt:

Relational Pain

Judas betrayed Him
Peter denied Him
The disciples forsook Him
His own people rejected Him

Emotional Pain

In Gethsemane He said: “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death.” (Matthew 26:38)

Physical Pain

Scourged
Mocked
Crown of thorns
Nailed to a cross
Jesus did not observe pain from heaven.
He entered our world and experienced it firsthand.
He knows what it is like to be:
rejected
misunderstood
wounded
abandoned
Your pain is not foreign to Him.

2. The Purpose He Embraced

Jesus did not just suffer.
He suffered willingly.
In Gethsemane He prayed:
Matthew 26:39 KJV 1900
O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
The cross was not an accident.
It was an assignment.
Isaiah 53:4 KJV 1900
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
That means:
Our sin
Our shame
Our sorrow
Our suffering
He carried it for us.
Jesus embraced the pain of the cross because He loved us too much to leave us in our sin.

3. The Promise He Extends

Because Jesus suffered, we have a promise.
Isaiah 53:5 KJV 1900
with his stripes we are healed.”
The suffering of Christ produced:
Compassion – He understands what we feel
Comfort – He walks with us in our pain
Cleansing – His suffering paid for our sin
When you hurt, remember this truth
You may feel alone,
but you are not alone.
There is a Savior who understands.
He has:
felt the rejection
endured the suffering
carried the sorrow
And today He offers grace to every broken heart.
Conclusion
The world asks:
“Does God understand my pain?”
The cross answers with a resounding YES.
Jesus was:
despised
wounded
bruised
crucified
So that when you hurt, you can know this:
Your pain is understood.
The pain we feel… Jesus already carried.
