Last of the series on Glorifying God
Looked at FHL & struggles (basis of our faith),
focus on living for God,
what does that look like (Jesus as our example)
What does Jesus want from us (Jesus’ Legacy)
How to Glorify God in a relationship through prayer
Explain: not praying for your kids
Cloak of Righteousness (How do we live now that we are Justified?)
Justified
Explain JUSTIFIED
Through my faith in Him, I am made right before God = Justified or Righteous
Justification is the act by which God declares someone righteous,
while righteousness is the status or relationship that results
Justification is a act of Gifting us Righteousness
Justification is a act of Gifting us Righteousness
Gift is Clothed with Righteousness
[4]
Clothed - Where does this come from?
Clothed - Where does this come from?
21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
To become the righteousness of God means to receive a restored standing before God—a legal status granted entirely through Christ’s work rather than earned through personal effort. This transformation occurs through Christ, who took on sin so that believers might become the righteousness of God. (2 Cor 5:21)
14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
27 And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.
10 I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness...
Hope you could make the connection: clothe w Christ / Righteousness
This is a Gift from God (Righteousness)
[7]
WHAT DO WE DO WHEN OFFERED A GIFT?
WHAT DO WE DO WHEN OFFERED A GIFT?
Receive
Open it
take it out
Use it
Gift of the Spirit - After open - scared stiff
Receive - Gifts too good to be true - Example
Open it - Neil’s spider
take it out - Open it, look at it, not mine
Use it - Take it out, too complicated, put it back
With the GoR we do the same.
We receive this ROBE (garment)
[9]
Robe - Garment
Robe - Garment
Meaning it is something we put on or wear
Image the perfect garmet
Something that will even make me look good
If I put it on, everyone will say I look great
If you asked Char - black bag
Char loves me a lot - God loves me more
RoR is something like that
Robe of Righteousness, make us look PERFECT
It hides my sin, my inperfections, it makes me holy
look like Jesus
LISTEN TO THIS - BE LIKE GOD
22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.
23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
God—truly righteous and holy - but what about my sin?
[12]
So what about sin?
So what about sin?
Still Righteous?
Still Righteous?
If I commit a sin, am I not righteous anymore?
Am I not made right with God anymore?
Your sin cannot make you unrighteous, cannot make you unright.
What it mean is that once you are justified, made right with God, have put on the robe of Righteousness, it cannot be undone.
So although we continue sinning, God’s wonderful GRACE (Stamped Justified/Righteous) made us free from the power of sin
Power of sin = Condemnation (Hell)
No longer slaves to sin => Going to heaven
1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace?
2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?
3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?
4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.
6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.
7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.
8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him.
So is there no punishment for my sin?
[15]
Discipline
Discipline
So what happens when we sin
God said that He will discipline us.
5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?
8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!
10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.
11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
When does His discipline stop?
When we have learnt our lesson & Once we say sorry (we repent)
I want to bring you back to
19 For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements—so that I might live for God.
My focus is on living for God, not to focus on not sinning.
Building that relationship is more important.
We need to let Jesus come out, make Him present - like when the cops drive behind you, you will behave.
OK, so we are disciplined and justified, we put the ROR, what now, what does it mean?
[19.5]
When we put on the RoR
When we put on the RoR
3 Jeshua’s clothing was filthy as he stood there before the angel.
4 So the angel said to the others standing there, “Take off his filthy clothes.” And turning to Jeshua he said, “See, I have taken away your sins, and now I am giving you these fine new clothes.”
5 Then I said, “They should also place a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean priestly turban on his head and dressed him in new clothes while the angel of the Lord stood by.
Now we are standing in a place of R before God
We can now live our new lives. Dressed for success.
We are now the reps of God
We can opperate in His authority.
And very conscious of doing God’s will.
[21]
What is God’s will?
What is God’s will?
It is also referred to as Great Personal Worship
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray continually,
18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Things to note:
All are very closely related, almost synonyms
Stylisticly, Bible writers use this method a lot (in chiasms) , CENTRE FOCUS, 1st and last the same,
PRAYER being central in the list, also means PRACTICALLY the centre of the 3.
Other 2 is so closely linked:
Prayer to Rejoice, Prayer to give thanks, (no thanks in Lord’s Prayer)
Example again
when you rejoice, you give thanks and vica-versa
These are 3 commands, instructions
But also are God’s will for you
These are also impossiblle commands
You may say “What is Paul on about”?
16 Rejoice always,
Example (death, sickness, job loss, failure) -
insult, persecute, lie about be because you believe in Jesus
17 pray continually,
Example (I’m not going to sleep, can’t work anymore, won’t be able to drive, or study - no school.
18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Example (thanks for cutting me off, for everything we can rejoice)
What is Paul smoking? (The Answer)
[26.5]
In Christ (PEFECTION THE TARGET)
In Christ (PEFECTION THE TARGET)
The key lies in the last part of v18 - IN CHRIST JESUS
18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
It is like sin: the command is “do not sin”
In Chris we are sinless (impossible became possibe)
Paul set a target of PERFECTION
And that is what he wants us to aim at
You know how Targets/Goals work
A goal is an aim, a purpose, a sense of direction toward which a person moves all of his energies, desires, and efforts. Goals are the “targets” toward which we point our lives.
Charles Stanley
We are talking about Gorifying God
Gorifying God through putting on the RoR
putting on the RoR we aim to Do God’s will
Doing God’s Will our goals/targets are Rejoice Alwas, Pray C, Give Thanks IAWD
He says our targets are PERFECTION
Like Darts or Golf (Tighter aim at a PERFECT Shot, to get in the general direction)
Scriptures help us develop the attitudes and habits that move us toward the mark, even if we’ll never obey them perfectly in this life
Christ our example
Since now doing In Christ -How do we see these commands now
[29.5]
REJOICE ALWAYS: What does this mean
REJOICE ALWAYS: What does this mean
In Christ Jesus I can rejoice always
When I rejoice in Christ, it does not matter what happens, I will stay/remain happy (rejoicing) BECAUSE OF CHRIST JESUS
Because of what He has done we can rejoice always, EVEN
In death, sickness, job loss, failure) - Because even then we have the hope of sharing in the Glory of God.
Jesus said even when people insult, persecute, lie about you because you believe in Me:
LOOK
11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.
12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.
ALSO
Rejoice always = Attitude, hope, happiness in Christ/Salvation
Next Pray
[32]
PRAY CONTINUALLY: What does this mean
PRAY CONTINUALLY: What does this mean
Not going to say much here, because we just had a sermon about prayer
Greek: Pray without ceasing - no intermission - no breaks - no gaps (related to a persistant cough)
Also used to describe repeated military attacks. Army fails, but attacks again and again, until success.
Target is not to stop
It sound like it may take up most of our time - and I know we don’t have enough minutes in a day
Luther's remark, "I have so much to do today that I shall never get through it with less than three hours' prayer."
Not so much time for pray on ordinary days, but since busy day, PRAY MORE
Paul Urges us to take out Jesus as much as possible - target is continious
That cop behind you example
[34]
LETS PUT IT TOGETHER
LETS PUT IT TOGETHER
No better verse to do this
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Hearts & Mind = Our soul
Our thoughts and Emotions - protected by the peace of God
A peace that comes from a FAITH/BELIEVE/TRUST that I don’t have to be -
anxious, angry, afraid, worried - instead REJOICE, PRAY, THANKS
[37]
SUMMARY
