Introduction

the term guard and its variations appears 10 times in the second section of chapter 3
coincidence? No!
the Mosaic tabernacle was a literal, physical structure, but it also pointed to something that was spiritually fulfilled in Christ and lived out by Christians
In theological terms, we refer to these as types and shadows
tabernacle, priesthood and Levites were early pictures of deeper spiritual truths we see in the NT, and we live now
What Israel experienced in shadows, we experience in Christ
Everything revolves around the Tabernacle: God dwelling with his people
Numbers 3 is about more than duties and names. It is about guarding what belongs to God.

Guard the shepherds — Num 3:6-10

entire tribe of Levi were Temple ministers, but within that group was a smaller group: the Priesthood
the Levites strengthened the priesthood. The church must strengthen its shepherds.
Support and protect those who lead God’s people
Every believer is called to serve, but there are some who are called to lead
Christians must:
pray for them
refuse gossip & division
support them
expect holiness
protect them
God assigned the Levites to serve around the priesthood because spiritual leadership matters. In Christ, we now have a perfect High Priest, yet God still gives shepherds to care for His church. Faithful leaders must be prayed for, supported, and protected.

Guard the ministry — Num 3:7-8

The Levites guarded sacred worship. The church must guard faithful ministry.
faithfully carry out the responsibilities of worship & ministry
Every believer is called to serve in some form or fashion
Christians must:
preserve the ministry of the Word: handle Scripture rightly
serve carefully, not carelessly, keeping Kingdom service as holy, not casual
refuse compromise for convenience
keep mission central
The Levites were entrusted with the ministry of the tabernacle and its sacred responsibilities. Today, we guard the work of ministry by keeping the gospel pure, the teaching sound, and the mission faithful.

Guard the body — Num 3:25-37

watch over the spiritual well-being of the body
The Levites guarded Israel from holy danger. The church must guard believers from spiritual harm.
the tabernacle is a type and shadow of several things
in NT, we are told that the Church, believers both individual and corporate, are the body of Christ.
Christians must:
retain sound doctrine, warning against error
restore the wandering and caring for the weak
encourage others to grow into maturity
protect unity of the body
The Levites helped protect Israel from the danger of mishandling holy things. In the church today, we guard the body by teaching truth, confronting error, restoring the fallen, and caring for one another in love.

Guard the Presence — Num 3:32, 38

maintain reverence for God’s holiness
•Tabernacle was center of life
Aaron, Moses, and Levites surrounded temple, serving as a border between the holy and the common
The Levites guarded the place of God’s presence. We must guard the reality of His presence among us through Christ and the Spirit.
Christians must:
refuse casual worship (and praise)
live holy lives
gather and honor Christ
keep reverence and awe
The tabernacle was all about the presence of God among His people. That presence finds its fulfillment in Jesus and is now known in the church through the Spirit. We must never treat lightly what God calls holy.

Conclusion

If they were commanded to guard a temporary tabernacle in the wilderness, how much more should we guard the church of the living God, purchased by the blood of Christ and inhabited by the Spirit of God?
