Text: Matthew 16:13–23

Subject: Identity In Christ

CIT/ETS: Jesus asked His disciples to identify Him and then redefined Peter’s identity based on that truth.
Proposition/ESS: Your true identity is defined by Christ’s sacrifice and work, not by the shifting opinions of the world.
Sermon Objective/OSS: Hearers will identify one worldly label they have accepted and replace it with a specific biblical truth about who they are in Jesus.
Story of SOS from Australia - SCJ (son has changed bc he begin to define himself through our organization )

Introduction

1. Every day, the world tries to hand you a name tag based on your performance or mistakes.
2. If we allow the world to define us, our sense of worth will be unstable. (Something is missing inside)
3. In Matthew 16, Jesus asks the most important question for our identity: "Who do you say that I am?". My weakness in knowing names
4. We discover how to live from the identity Christ gives us rather than the one the world demands.

Body

I. Reject The Distraction Of Worldly Labels (Matthew 16:13–14)

Distraction meaning - away from your true identity
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
· EXP: Explain how the crowds tried to fit Jesus into "old boxes" like Elijah or Jeremiah.
· ILL: Like a "funhouse mirror," the world reflects a warped version of you.
· ARG: The world can only define you by your past, but Christ defines you by His grace.
· APP: NT Tie-back (Romans 12:2): Paul warns us not to be "conformed to this world" but to be transformed by renewing our minds—refusing the world's labels.
Refuse to be "conformed to this world" by identifying and discarding labels like "failure" or "unworthy".

II. Respond to the Holy Spirit (Matthew 16:15–18)

15 “But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus responded, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven.
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
· EXP: Peter’s confession was a gift of revelation from the Father, resulting in a new name and purpose.
· ILL: Turning on a light in a dark room so you can finally see things as they are.
· ARG: You cannot truly know yourself until you first acknowledge who Jesus is.
· APP: NT Tie-back (2 Corinthians 5:17): When we are "in Christ," the old identity is gone and we are a "new creation"—defined by our union with Him.
Practice through daily reminder seeing yourself as a "new creation" whose identity is anchored in the "Rock" of Christ rather than your own efforts.

III. Allow the Spirit to Guard you from Wordly Thinking (Matthew 16:21–23) - powered by the spirit

21 From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to you!”
23 Jesus turned and told Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns[m] but human concerns.”
· EXP: Jesus rebuked Peter ("Get behind me, Satan") because Peter rejected the necessity of the cross.
· ILL: A friend who encourages you to take the easy way out even when the hard way is the right way. Real friends tell the truth
· ARG: We often want a "King" without a "Cross," but our identity is rooted in Christ's sacrifice. Daily "crucify" your desire for worldly approval and live instead from the power of the One who gave Himself for you.
· APP: NT Tie-back (Galatians 2:20): Our identity is now "crucified with Christ"; it is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us through His redemptive work.

Conclusion

Reject The Distraction Of Worldly Opinion: Stop viewing yourself through the "funhouse mirror" of societal expectations and past mistakes, choosing instead to discard the labels the world tries to impose on you.
2. Respond to the Holy Spirit: Embrace the divine revelation that your true name and purpose are only found after you acknowledge who Jesus is, allowing Him to redefine you as a "new creation."
3. The Danger Of Worldly Definitions: Guard against the temptation to seek a crown without a cross, recognizing that your identity is permanently anchored in Christ’s sacrifice rather than human comfort or effort.
4. REMEMBER: True identity is found by rejecting unstable worldly labels and embracing a new, permanent self-image defined solely by the revelation of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross.
