2 Timothy 4:7–8 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
Bobby fought a good fight for the Lord. Let me tell you a few things about my limited experience with Bobby.
Bobby was an Encourager
Bobby was an Encourager
After every service Bobby would tell me that I preached a good sermon. He would tell me I was a good preacher and faithful to the Scriptures. He would tell me that he enjoyed hearing me preach every time. Now, I am not sure I live up to all of his accolades, but I do know that Bobby’s intentions was to encourage this preacher to keep preaching. The compliments did not go near as far to have me believing them, but they did leave me encouraged each and every time.
I know that I was not the only one. He often bragged to me about his Pastor Trammell from Landmark Baptist Church. He spoke highly of him as well, showed appreciation for his messages, and loved him dearly. I know that Bobby encouraged him like he did me.
I am sure you can think of a time (or many times) that Bobby encouraged you.
Bobby was Thoughtful
Bobby was Thoughtful
Bobby was not only thoughtful in his compliments he would do things for you and many times without you asking him. When he did it he expected nothing in return. The simple smile it brought to your face was good enough for him. I can recall two specific things that he did for my family that was very thoughtful.
One time when he and Mary came back to Clarendon on their trips “home” from Tyler he stopped at a place that had the best personal fried pies. They had them in all different flavors and they were excellent. I didn’t know about the place. When Bobby stopped there he got a whole mess of them for me and my family. My kids loved them. Bobby loved seeing our smiles. A pie seems like such a small thing, but it was his thoughtfulness to bring them to us. He knew a lot of people in Clarendon, but he brought us pies. His thoughtfulness made you feel special and if you need Bobby you were special to him.
Another time, once again on his trip home from Tyler, he came by my house. He had made all my kids step stools with their names on them. They loved them. They were so excited to each get one with their names on them. They put them in the bathroom and used them well. They took them to their playhouse in the back yard. Once again, Bobby just loved the smiles it put on the kids faces.
Think about how thoughtful Bobby was to you and how special he made you feel.
Bobby loved well
Bobby loved well
Bobby loved on his kids and grandkids. Bobby loved his churches, his pastors, and his family. Bobby also loved his home. He was so very sad when it was time to move to Tyler. Mary was in the car in a flash, but Bobby was sad and tearful; not because it wasn’t the right move for them, but because he loved the place he had lived for so long. He loved his home, his land, and the people of his community. He was saddened to leave it all behind and his thoughtfulness kept him coming back to give to those in his community in a way that only Bobby could.
BUT God took him to Landmark Baptist Church and helped him fall in love with another pastor, another church, and another community. He was greatly helped by his love that he enjoyed pouring out upon people. His love for people is what helped him overcome his grief of leaving home and found another place of service and belonging.
Bobby certainly loved well. I know he loved me. I am sure you knew he loved you too.
