Nehemiah Series – Week 3

“Build While Battling”

Text: Nehemiah 3–4

BIG IDEA

When God’s work begins, opposition usually follows.
Faithful people don’t stop building when opposition comes.
They build while battling.

CONTEXT

In chapter 3 something incredible happens.
The people of Jerusalem begin rebuilding the wall.
Everyone joins in.
Families. Priests. Leaders. Merchants.
But as soon as progress begins…
Opposition intensifies.

I. Everyone Has a Section of the Wall (Nehemiah 3)

Chapter 3 is a long list of names and jobs.
But it teaches something powerful.
The wall was rebuilt because everyone worked.

1. The work was shared.

Different groups rebuilt different sections.
Priests rebuilt gates. Families rebuilt near their homes. Craftsmen helped where they could.
No one built the whole wall.
Everyone built their part.

2. Ordinary people did extraordinary work.

These were not professional builders.
They were:
priests
merchants
rulers
daughters (3:12)
God often accomplishes great things through ordinary people who are willing.

Application for students

You don’t have to be famous to make a difference.
You just have to be faithful where God places you.
Every student has a section of the wall.

II. Opposition Begins (Nehemiah 4:1–3)

As soon as progress begins…
The enemies show up again.
Sanballat and Tobiah start mocking the builders.

Their attacks

They say:
“What are these weak Jews doing?” “Can they rebuild the wall?” “Even a fox will break it down!”
This is ridicule.
They attack:
their strength
their plan
their ability
Mockery is one of Satan’s favorite weapons.

Application

Students today face the same kind of pressure.
“You take church too seriously.”
“You actually believe the Bible?”
“You're different.”
Ridicule tries to make faith feel embarrassing.

III. The Right Response to Criticism (4:4–6)

Notice what Nehemiah does.
He doesn’t argue.
He doesn’t panic.
He prays.

1. He brings the criticism to God.

Prayer was his first response.
Not revenge.
Not arguments.
Prayer.

2. The people kept building.

“So we built the wall…”
The best response to criticism is continued obedience.

Key phrase

“The people had a mind to work.”
The work moved forward because the people stayed committed.

IV. Opposition Escalates (4:7–12)

When mocking didn’t stop the work…
The enemies planned an attack.
They tried to create fear.

The strategy of the enemy

Intimidation
Threats
Fear
Discouragement
The people began saying:
“The strength of the laborers is failing.”
This is what opposition often does.
It attacks morale.

V. Faithful Leaders Strengthen People (4:13–14)

Nehemiah gathers the people.
He gives them perspective.
“Do not be afraid of them.”

Then he says something powerful

“Remember the Lord.”
Fear shrinks when we remember who God is.
He reminds them:
God is
great
awesome
stronger than the enemy
Then he says:
“Fight for your brothers, sons, daughters, wives, and homes.”
Now they have something worth defending.

VI. Work and Watch (4:15–23)

Nehemiah changes the strategy.
Half work.
Half guard.
Builders worked with one hand building and one hand holding a weapon.

Spiritual principle

Following God doesn’t mean life becomes easy.
Sometimes we must build and battle at the same time.
Christians today:
build faith
build families
build churches
While also battling:
temptation
discouragement
spiritual attack

Key phrase

“Our God will fight for us.”
Their confidence was not in their swords.
It was in God.

KEY TRUTHS FOR LIN C YOUTH

Everyone has a role in God's work.
Progress will attract opposition.
Prayer is the best response to criticism.
Fear grows when we forget who God is.
God calls us to build while battling.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Why do you think everyone in chapter 3 helped build the wall?
Why do people sometimes mock those who follow God?
What are some pressures students face when trying to live for Christ?
How does remembering God help when we feel afraid?
What is something you need to keep building even when it gets hard?

CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK

This week ask yourself:
What section of the wall has God given me to build?
Maybe it's:
your faith
your character
your friendships
your witness at school
Don’t quit because opposition comes.
Build anyway.
