Sermon Title: The Most Important Commandment

Main Passage: Mark 12:29–31 Main Idea: God wants us to love Him most and love people well.

1. Introduction (2 minutes) – “What’s the Most Important Rule?”

Ask the kids:
“What are some rules you have at home?”
“What are some rules at school?”
Explain: There are lots of rules in life, but someone once asked Jesus Christ a big question:
“What is the most important commandment?”
That’s exactly what happens in our Bible story.

2. The Question to Jesus (2 minutes)

A teacher of the law asked Jesus:
“What commandment is the most important?”
Jesus answered with two commands that go together.

Command #1

Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Command #2

Love your neighbor as yourself.
Jesus said these are the greatest commandments.

3. Love God With Everything (4 minutes)

Explain the four parts simply.

Heart ❤️

Love God with your feelings and desires.
Example:
Wanting to please God
Being thankful for what He gives

Soul 🙏

Love God with your life and spirit.
Example:
Trusting God
Praying

Mind 🧠

Love God with your thoughts.
Example:
Thinking about what is true
Learning from the Bible

Strength 💪

Love God with your actions and energy.
Example:
Serving others
Doing what is right even when it’s hard
Illustration: Ask the kids: “If you play a sport, do you give half effort or your best effort?”
God wants our whole life, not just a small part.

4. Love Your Neighbor (4 minutes)

Explain that neighbor doesn’t just mean the person next door.
Your neighbor is:
Kids at school
Family
Friends
People who are different from you
Teach them that Jesus Christ cared for everyone.
Examples for kids:
At school:
Include someone sitting alone
Help someone who dropped their books
At home:
Be kind to siblings
Obey parents
At church:
Welcome new kids
Encourage friends
Simple truth: If we love God, it should show in how we treat people.

5. Why These Two Commands Matter (2 minutes)

Jesus said these commands are the most important because:
Loving God puts Him first.
Loving people shows God’s love in action.
You can’t say you love God but treat people badly.
Love for God → leads to → love for people.

6. Challenge for the Week (1 minute)

Ask the kids two questions:
How will you love God this week?
Pray
Read the Bible
Thank Him
How will you love someone else this week?
Help a friend
Encourage someone
Forgive someone

7. Closing Prayer (30–60 seconds)

Thank God for:
Loving us first
Sending Jesus Christ
Ask God to help the kids:
Love Him with their whole life
Love others every day.
