Why Communion?
Growing up we had Communion every time that we went to Mass. As I got older I watched people go to Mass take Communion and then go to the Bar and have more to drink then they could handle and wake up the next day felling good about the fact that they were in Church and shared in the Lord’s Supper. Now, just because I made those observations – it did not make me any better then they were. So, after graduating from High School I just choose to not take communion so that I would not be a hypocrite. It was that confusion that caused me to begin questioning my life – which eventually led me to becoming a Christian.
During my 30 + years of being a Pastor I have been told on numerous occasions that we have Communion too often; that we don’t have Communion often enough and that we have communion just often enough. Placed in a different setting it would almost sound like Goldie Locks and the Three Bears.
Why Communion? Why is it important? What difference can it make in my life? Can it become too familiar and lose its impact on my life? Those are the types of questions that I have been asking and have been asked for over 35 years.
This morning I want to take a few minutes and talk about Communion and show us the significance of what we are going to share in together.
So, why do we share in Communion as followers of Jesus Christ?
First, To Remember
“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” NIV
“This is my body that is for you. Keep doing this in memory of me.” 25 He did the same with the cup after the supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. As often as you drink from it, keep doing this in memory of me.” ISV
