LENT: Repent & Reflect
LENT: Repent & Reflect
Main idea:
Main idea:
Lent: Repent & Reflect, offers a thoughtful exploration of the season of Lent, focusing on its central themes of repentance, reflection, and forgiveness.
It unpacks the call to turn away from sin, examine our hearts before God, and embrace His grace and mercy through Christ.
Drawing from the timeless truth of scripture, it encourages believers to use Lent as a season of spiritual renewal and preparation for the joy of Easter.
Through repentance and reflection, we are reminded of the transformative power of God’s forgiveness and love.
Prayer:
“Gracious God, as we journey through this season of Lent, teach us to repent of our sins, reflect on Your goodness, and forgive as You have forgiven us.
Help us to walk humbly with You, trusting in Your grace to sustain us.
Prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter, that we may live as people transformed by the power of Your resurrection.”
Scripture: Joel 2:12-13, Matthew 4:1-2
(All scripture is taken from the NIV unless otherwise noted)
Introduction
Introduction
Lent is a sacred season in the Christian calendar, marked by a journey of repentance, reflection, and preparation.
Traditionally spanning 40 days, Lent invites us to draw nearer to God by setting aside distractions and focusing on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It is a season of intentionality—a time to examine our hearts, confess our sins, and realign our lives with the purposes of God.
In this message, we will explore the key themes of Lent: repentance, reflection, and forgiveness.
My prayer is that we leave today with a deeper understanding of what it means to walk in humility and grace during this holy season.
Scripture Reading Let us begin with two foundational passages:
● Joel 2:12-13: “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.”
● Matthew 4:1-2: “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.”
These verses set the tone for Lent as a season of returning to God and following the example of Jesus in His humility and obedience.
Main Teaching
Main Teaching
Lent calls us to engage deeply with three key themes: repentance, reflection, and forgiveness.
Each of these themes offers us a unique opportunity to grow closer to God and to one another.
Repentance: A Call to Turn Back to God
Repentance: A Call to Turn Back to God
Repentance is at the very heart of Lent.
The word "repentance" means to turn around or change direction.
It’s not just about feeling sorry for what we’ve done wrong; it’s about turning our hearts back to God and allowing Him to redirect our lives.
When the prophet Joel called the people to repent, he said, “Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God” (Joel 2:13).
In other words, God is not interested in outward displays of sorrow.
He is looking for a true transformation of the heart.
In the New Testament, we see Jesus begin His ministry with the call to repentance:
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17).
Repentance is the doorway to God’s kingdom.
Repentance is the doorway to God’s kingdom.
It is the moment we recognize our need for His grace and begin to walk in a new direction.
During Lent, we are invited to examine our lives and confess the ways we have fallen short.
This might involve fasting, giving up something that has taken too much of our attention, or dedicating more time to prayer.
Repentance requires honesty before God and a willingness to let go of sin.
As Dietrich (Dee-trick)Bonhoeffer wrote,
“Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ.”
Lent reminds us that grace is costly.
It calls for repentance and a turning back to God.
Let me ask you: What areas of your life need to be turned over to God?
Are there habits, attitudes, or relationships that require repentance?
Lent is the perfect time to take stock of your heart and invite God to renew and redirect you.
Pastor
My personal time during Lent, is asking God to renew a right spirit within my heart toward him and others.
Okay taking timeout to spend with the Lord during each day.
Asking God to help me with healing from the Spiritual and physical Areas in my life.
Asking God to show me the clear vision and the call on my life.
And show me new ways to execute the mandate that Faith Vision was given to go into the world and preach the gospel, and be a training ground for all things Jesus Christ.
Reflection: A Time to Examine Our Hearts
Reflection: A Time to Examine Our Hearts
The season of Lent is also a time for reflection.
Just as Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness reflecting on His mission and identity, we are invited to reflect on our own spiritual journey.
Reflection is not about guilt or shame but about creating space for God to speak into our lives.
The psalmist writes in Psalm 139:23-24,
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
This kind of prayer requires courage.
It’s not easy to ask God to reveal what is hidden in our hearts.
But it is essential if we want to grow closer to Him.
Reflection can take many forms.
Some may choose to keep a journal, meditate on Scripture, or practice silence and solitude.
The goal is not just to think deeply but to align our hearts with God’s purposes.
Andrie)Henri Nouwen (Andrie Newen) once said,
“Spiritual formation, I have come to believe, is not about steps or stages on the way to perfection. It is about the movements from the mind to the heart through prayer in the presence of God.”
Lent invites us to move beyond surface-level faith and into the depths of God’s transformative presence.
So, how can you create space in your life to reflect during this season?
Maybe it’s turning off distractions or setting aside dedicated time each day to sit with God.
However you choose to reflect, let it be a time of drawing nearer to the one who knows you fully and loves you completely.
Forgiveness: Receiving and Extending Grace
Forgiveness: Receiving and Extending Grace
Finally, Lent is a season of forgiveness.
As we repent and reflect, we are reminded of the incredible forgiveness God has extended to us through Jesus Christ.
Forgiveness is at the very core of the Gospel.
Without it, we would remain trapped in our sins, unable to experience the freedom that Christ offers.
Jesus teaches us to pray,
“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matthew 6:12).
Notice the connection between receiving forgiveness and extending it to others.
On the cross, Jesus modeled this perfectly when He prayed,
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).
Forgiveness can be one of the hardest things to practice, especially when we have been deeply hurt.
But Lent reminds us that just as we have received God’s grace, we are called to extend grace to others.
Corrie ten Boom, a survivor of the Holocaust, said,
“Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hatred. It is a power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness.”
Forgiveness is not optional for followers of Christ; it is a pathway to freedom.
Is there someone you need to forgive this Lent?
Perhaps it’s a friend, a family member, or even yourself.
Whatever the case, remember that forgiveness is not about excusing what was done but about releasing the burden of bitterness and choosing to walk in freedom.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Lent is more than just a season—it is an invitation to deeper communion with God.
It is a sacred time to slow down, to turn our hearts toward Him, and to prepare for the joy of Easter.
But this journey is not a passive one.
It calls us to actively engage in repentance, reflection, and forgiveness in ways that shape our daily lives and intentions.
So, during this Lent season, consider these specific ways to live out the heart of Lent:
Practice True Repentance –
Take time each day to confess your sins honestly before God.
Ask him to reveal areas of your life that need to change and take steps toward transformation.
Consider fasting from a habit or distraction that pulls your heart away from him.
Create Space for Reflection –
Set aside intentional moments to be with God.
Read Scripture daily, keep a journal of what he is teaching you, or spend time in silence and prayer.
Ask him to search your heart and guide you in his ways.
Embrace Forgiveness –
Just as we seek God's mercy, we are called to extend it to others.
If there is someone you need to forgive, ask God for the strength to release resentment and walk in grace.
If you need to receive forgiveness, surrender your guilt and allow his love to restore you.
Prepare for Easter with Expectation –
Lent is not just about self-denial; it is about preparing for the celebration of Christ’s victory.
Approach this season with the anticipation of resurrection hope.
Let your fasting, prayers, and reflection draw you closer to the risen Savior.
Lent is a journey—a journey of surrender, of growth, and of renewal.
As we repent, reflect, and forgive, may we be transformed by God's grace and emerge from this journey (season) ready to rejoice in the power of Christ’s resurrection on Easter morning.
Let’s pray together.
Let’s pray together.
Salvation:
Salvation:
The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
