ANCHOR MOVEMENT
ANCHOR MOVEMENT
Drifting. Distorting. Disbelieving.
BIG IDEA
BIG IDEA
Revival begins when we stop resisting what God has clearly revealed.
INTRODUCTION: THE MISSED PRESENCE
INTRODUCTION: THE MISSED PRESENCE
There’s a phenomenon in emergency response called “task fixation.”
A pilot can:
see warning lights
hear alarms
have full data
…and still crash.
Why?
Because they become locked onto the wrong interpretation of reality.
The most famous example is Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 (1972), which crashed into the Florida Everglades. The flight crew became fixated on a malfunctioning landing gear indicator light, failing to notice that the autopilot had been accidentally switched to a mode causing a slow, undetected descent. Despite the aircraft’s gradual loss of altitude, the crew remained preoccupied with the landing gear problem, leading to a fatal crash that killed 101 people.
Everything they need is present, but they misread it.
That is Luke 24.
Two followers:
have the facts
have the testimony
have the timeline
…and yet, they are completely wrong.
Even worse, Jesus is walking with them.
An unclean heart doesn’t remove truth, it distorts how you interpret it.
You can have all the right information, and still reach all the wrong conclusions.
Let’s walk the text.
1. DRIFTING: A HEART THAT WALKS AWAY FROM REVELATION (v. 13_
1. DRIFTING: A HEART THAT WALKS AWAY FROM REVELATION (v. 13_
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
“That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus…”
They leave on resurrection day
They leave on resurrection day
Luke emphasizes: “That very day”
This is not random timing.
This is:
resurrection day
the day the tomb is empty
the day God has acted decisively
They recount the events (vv.1–12), yet “clearly did not believe that Jesus had risen.” (Faithlife)
They are not leaving because God is absent; they are leaving because they don’t believe what God has done.
They walked away on the very day God proved Himself faithful.
Unbelief will make you walk away from what God is doing, even while it’s happening.
They move away from where God is working
They move away from where God is working
They leave Jerusalem, the center of:
crucifixion
resurrection
revelation
And head to Emmaus, a place of:
normalcy
retreat
distance
They were heading home, convinced their hopes were gone (MacArthur
Drift is not just internal; it becomes directional.
They didn’t just lose belief, they changed direction.
When belief fades, direction follows.
Drift is rooted in misplaced expectation (vv. 13 & 21)
Drift is rooted in misplaced expectation (vv. 13 & 21)
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
“We were hoping…” (v.21)
Their movement in v.13 is explained by v.21.
They didn’t just leave; they lost confidence in their expectation of Jesus.
They believed in the glory of the Messiah but rejected the suffering. (MacArthur)
They didn’t reject Scripture; they believed part of it.
A partial theology produced a total drift.
If you only believe the parts of God’s Word you like, you will walk away when the rest becomes reality.
Like the pilot:
They had:
correct data
real events
true information
But they misread it, and it led them off course.
TRANSITION
TRANSITION
They’re still talking about Jesus, but they are no longer interpreting Him correctly.
2. DISTORTING: A HEART THAT MISINTERPRETS REVELATION
2. DISTORTING: A HEART THAT MISINTERPRETS REVELATION
(vv.14–24)
(vv.14–24)
They discuss truth without understanding truth (vv. 14–15)
They discuss truth without understanding truth (vv. 14–15)
They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
“They were talking…discussing…”
Greek Insight:
Greek Insight:
“συζητέω” (discussing, debating, analyzing)
They are:
processing
reasoning
analyzing
They are intellectually engaged but spiritually disconnected.
They were talking about truth but were not transformed by it.
You can analyze truth without actually believing it.
They redefine Jesus inaccurately (v. 19)
They redefine Jesus inaccurately (v. 19)
“What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.
“Jesus…a prophet mighty in deed and word…”
Their defininot of Jesus as the Messiah was:
true
but incomplete
They correctly identify His works, but misunderstand His mission (Evans)
Theological Weight:
Theological Weight:
They reduce Jesus to:
prophet
instead of:
Messiah
Redeemer
They didn’t deny Jesus; they downgraded Him.
A reduced Jesus will always produce a reduced faith.
Their expectations distort interpretation (v.21)
Their expectations distort interpretation (v.21)
but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
“We were hoping…”
Their interpretation of reality is filtered through:
expectation
preference
assumption
They were swept up in Kingdom expectation and blinded to suffering. (MacArthur)
They didn’t read Scripture wrongly; they read it selectively.
When expectations lead, truth gets reshaped.
Unmet expectations often become the doorway to unbelief.
Evidence is present but resisted (vv.22–24)
Evidence is present but resisted (vv.22–24)
In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
They list:
empty tomb (v.23)
but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
angelic testimony (v.23)
but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.
eyewitness verification (v.24)
Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
The empty tomb and angelic report were not enough to convince them.
This is not lack of evidence, this is resistance to surrender.
They had enough evidence to believe, but enough resistance to avoid believing.
The issue is not evidence; it’s surrender.
The pilot ignores alarms, not because they aren’t real, but because they don’t fit his interpretation.
Same here:
evidence is present
truth is clear
But their interpretation overrides reality.
Now we reach the deepest layer.
3. DISBELIEVING: A HEART THAT CANNOT RECOGNIZE CHRIST (vv. 15-17)
3. DISBELIEVING: A HEART THAT CANNOT RECOGNIZE CHRIST (vv. 15-17)
Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.
He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast.
Jesus draws near (v.15)
Jesus draws near (v.15)
As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;
“Jesus Himself drew near…”
They are not pursuing Him, He is pursuing them.
Even in their drift, Jesus moves toward them.
You may drift from Jesus, but He does not drift from you.
Their eyes are restrained (v.16)
Their eyes are restrained (v.16)
but they were kept from recognizing him.
“Their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him”
κρατέω (to restrain, hold back)
God restrains recognition but their unbelief explains why
Their blindness is tied to their failure to understand Scripture. (MacArthur)
This is not random it is judicial and participatory.
They could not recognize Him physically because they would not believe Him spiritually.
Spiritual blindness is not just inability, it’s unwillingness.
Their sadness reveals their theology (v.17)
Their sadness reveals their theology (v.17)
He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast.
“They stood still, looking sad”
Their emotions are the fruit of their belief system.
Their sadness and confusion were rooted in misunderstanding Scripture. (MacArthur)
They are not just sad they are theologically misaligned.
Their faces revealed what their faith had lost.
What you believe about God will eventually show up in how you feel about life.
Final condition (vv.15–17)
Final condition (vv.15–17)
They are:
near Jesus
hearing truth
surrounded by evidence
And still, blind.
Jesus was present, but their hearts were closed.
The greatest barrier to revival is not distance from God, but resistance to Him.
The plane doesn’t crash because the system failed, it crashes because the pilot misread reality.
Revival doesn’t fail because God is absent, it fails because we misinterpret what He has already said.
FULL DIAGNOSIS
FULL DIAGNOSIS
The issue is not revelation, it is reception.
God has already spoken, the question is whether you will believe Him.
DEFINING “UNCLEAN”
DEFINING “UNCLEAN”
An unclean heart drifts from truth, distorts truth, and resists believing truth—even when it is clearly revealed.
Unclean isn’t distance, it’s resistance.
CONCLUSION: WHY REVIVAL HAS NOT STARTED
CONCLUSION: WHY REVIVAL HAS NOT STARTED
Revival hasn’t started because:
We:
hear truth
see evidence
have access
But still:
drift
distort
resist
CALLBACK
CALLBACK
They were close, and still missed Him.
You can be in the middle of what God is doing, and still miss it.
Gopsel:
They didn’t recognize Him, but He never stopped walking with them.
Revival begins when we stop resisting what God has said and finally believe Him.
Revival begins when we stop resisting what God has said and finally believe Him.
