Acts - The Sermon Part 2
Acts - The Sermon Part 2
Last week we were introduced to the miracle…
Not healing people
Not making people rich
Not raising the dead
It was the ability to speak with others in their language
Peter is speaking to his kinsmen…
Men [and] brothers, (29) it is permitted for me to speak with boldness to you concerning the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us until this day. (30) Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that, with an oath God swore to him that his offspring sits on his throne, (31) he foresaw and spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he abandoned to Hades nor did his body see corruption. (32) This Jesus God raised up, of which we all are witnesses.
Interesting that Peter will use the phrase ‘David died and was buried…’
Yet his tomb is here to this day.
It has been 500 years since Jerusalem had a king
It has been ~1000 years since David ruled as king
(33) Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you both see and hear. (34) For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, 'The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand (35) until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.' (36) Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.
What you see and hear…
The apostles speaking and the people hearing in their native language
David ‘died and was buried…’
And he was not raised to ‘ascend into the heavens.’
but he spoke of this day in Psalm 110.
Did you catch what Peter is doing:
The enemies of God are the stool for Messiah’s feet
And you crucified him…
(37) And having heard they were pierced in heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brothers, what shall we do? (38) And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized each one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (39) For the promise is for you and for your children and for all those far off, for everyone, to whom the proclamation of the Lord our God goes out.
How do you transition from enemy to friend?
You may not know it…but this passage is contentious.
It is about baptism
For those who want to hold Israel as the enemy of God…
You have some work to do in this passage
The promise is the ones there and their children, for all who are far off, for everyone
You cannot isolate Israel
(40) And with many other words he testified and exhorted them saying, Be saved from this crooked generation. (41) Therefore those who welcomed his word were baptized, and there were added in that day about three thousand souls. (42) And they were continuing steadfastly in the teaching of the apostles and in the fellowship, in the breaking of the bread and in the prayers.
