"RED LETTERS”—words of X, dive into S.o.M., Beatitudes!
JC gives roll call of those who bc movers/shakers in Kingdom
Needy, meek, humble, pursue right’ss & justice & peace; as a result: persecuted!
Shocking roster; encouraging list; telling revelation re: Jesus’ heart
Remember: “Kingd.” is not about borders, but about reach of authority/rule
Consider: “Does God’s authority (what’s right/best) guide YOU in your life?”
What God’s kingdom looks like is shocking. What’s not accepted is just as much… >
Jesus, in turn, warns the: secure, haughty, unstable, deceivers, & peace-keepers—God’s kingdom has no room for them!
Jesus’ next teaching dives right into the heart of one who’s part of His Kingdom rule!
Matthew 5:13 ““You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
Jesus makes an ID assertion… and a signif. warning!
Want to point out, JC makes 2 assumptions, one will lead us into our main teaching today >>
1. Jesus Assumes the World Needs Salt
1. Jesus Assumes the World Needs Salt
Jesus says: “if the salt loses its saltiness… it’s worthless.”
ipso facto > Salt has a specific benefit to the world!
Now, JC’s hearers likely didn’t need a reminder about this.
Avg. Jew > far from the ideal days of King David/Solomon promised!
Regularly oppressed, bullied, abused by Roman overlords
Avg. gentile > poor, paranoid of gods, not just work 2 ends meet—survive!
The general “flavor” of the first century world (for its average citizen) was bland at best, bitter at worst!
And that’s just focusing on the socio-political climate!
The spiritual/moral state of
So Jesus is identifies His followers as those who come in contact with the bitter culture and make a difference.
Likewise, Jesus prays this about His disciples/Church:
John 17:15–18 “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.… [Make them holy] by the truth; your word is truth.”
Salt is only meaningful where there is lack.
Like light is only noticeable where there is darkness.
Jesus expects His disciples to live in contrast to the world around them.
JC assumes that the world is in need of something. He also >>
2. Jesus Assumes that…
2. Jesus Assumes that…
And I want you to say it with me today:
“I am Salt for the World…”
“I am Salt for the World…”
Jesus does not say, “Become salt” or “Try to be saltier.” He says, “You are…”
This is ID before assignment! You ARE influencers, difference-makers.
It’s that contrast we're called to: live different & make a difference!
Matthew 5:13 ““You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out & trampled underfoot.”
JC’s hearers would’ve understood the word-pic. of ‘salt’ & what it does
Not so 2000 yrs later.
TODAY: break down different nuance ‘salt’ can have;
what kind of pers. called to be in the world. >>
I Preserve what is Decaying
I Preserve what is Decaying
In the ancient world, salt was essential for preserving meat in the absence of refrigeration.
Shipping meat long dist. (even next town over); didn’t want to eat that day… coated with salt rub!
Sodium-Cl draws water out making bacteria growth very difficult!
Actually slows down the decaying in meat.
Believers are called to slow corruption in a culture that naturally drifts toward decay. Ezekiel 22:30.
God wants those who will stand up for those being mistre’d & use voice to bring free’m!
A new Moses, Gideon, Jeremiah, Daniel!
Ezekiel 22:30 ““I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.”
What this means for me:
I preserve truth where truth is being eroded.
Xians preserve holiness where compromise is celebrated!
We preserve justice where cruelty is normalized.
Xians preserve covenant, family, integrity, mercy, & purity where darwinism & humanism prevalent.
U see, Xians are not merely called to complain about corruption; we are called to stand in the gap and restrain it by our presence.
This shade of meaning (salt’s preserving power) lines up w/ “peacemaking” last week
Making things right, seeking compromise, pursuing real change
And we all know how World responds to peacemaking… persecution!
When we preserve the ethics of a workplace… maybe @ xpense of income.
Preserv'g truth in the home; even not on united front (very hard!).
To Preserve moral clarity in a generation given so many options that confusion prevalent!
Alternative is true, too:
“When the church stops being salty, decay accelerates.”
As salt, called to halt decay. More positively >>
I Bring out the Best of my Surroundings
I Bring out the Best of my Surroundings
Salt doesn’t just preserve—it brings flavor forward.
Salt enhances what is already there.
Here’s thing: God made a good world, humans have some divine potential in us—by default spoiled, tainted.
We’re called to bring out best of each of us—by pointing ea. other to Christ.
Believers should make the world more aware of:
beauty | truth | goodness | grace
The reality & character of God!
Sometimes Christian influence is not merely confrontational — it is transformational and enriching.
Paul says it’s a key step in our spiritual maturity.
Ephesians 4:14–15 “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching… Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of [Christ].”
“Speaking truth lovingly"—saying hard things in a way that is received well/understands other person
While this focuses on speech (tough to tame), this also looks like:
Offering wisdom for a chaotic situation
Showing compassion instead of complying with harsh systems
Seeking peace in midst relational conflict
Speaking joy and optimism into a cynical environments
People complaining or looking for faults, never seeing the good in others/sit.
Really, just demonstrate Fruit of HS.
Galatians 5:22–23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
This is not “being nice for the sake of likability.”
This is making the character of Christ taste-able in a bitter world.
Salt has no taste in itself.
Like the FoTS:
Salt does not draw attention to itself — it makes everything it touches more vivid. A true disciple makes Jesus more visible, not themselves.
Salt staves off moral decay; enhances what’s good… X gives unique warning! >>
I Need to Stay Salty
I Need to Stay Salty
Matthew 5:13 “…If the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
Am I Desalinized?
Pure sodium chloride (NaCl) doesn’t really stop being salty!
JC almost certainly drawing from the kind of impure, mineral-rich salt common in the ANE— salt gathered from Dead Sea region, marshes, or evaporated deposits.
1st C “Salt” could mixed w/ gypsum, sand, dirt, etc.
Over time, the actual salt content could leach out through moisture, leaving behind a white-looking residue that looked like salt but had lost its effectiveness.
After the NaCl leeched out, the remaining impurities still looked like salt, but no longer did what salt is supposed to do.
So when Jesus says “if the salt loses its savor”, He likely means…
If the "salt” has been so compromised that its essential quality is gone… may as well be tossed!
That is why He says: “How shall its saltiness be restored?”
Because once the salt element is gone, you can’t “re-salt” the residue. It’s just mineral waste.
Worse than when the church is hated for being different; the real tragedy is when the church is ignored because it's indistinguishable.
Instead of some1 who may seem good on the outside, but not be living auth. Xian life >>
Be a Covenant of Salt in the World
Be a Covenant of Salt in the World
One last use salt was known in 1st (Judea!)
Salt in Scripture can symbolize covenant faithfulness
You see,
In ancient sacrificial practice, YHWH commanded salt to be added to that laid on altar & burned (Leviticus 2:13)
God uses this wording to describe the lasting nature of His prom. to Aaron/line o’ priests:
Numbers 18:19 “Whatever is set aside from the holy offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the Lord for both you and your offspring.””
A Covenant of Salt reveals: the covenant is enduring, binding, & not to be casually broken (Numbers 18:19).
Jesus may not only be saying disciples preserve the world —
He may also be implying: YOU are a covenant-marked people, whose very presence bears witness to the enduring faithfulness of God.
We are not merely salty people; we are to live like signs of faithful goodness & life to a decaying world.
1. Be Present — 2. Be Distinct — 3. Be Courageous — 4. Be Gracious — 5. Be God-Centered
Let your life point beyond you.
Ask daily: “Does my presence make Jesus easier to see?”
Ask daily: “Does my presence make Jesus easier to see?”
