Sermon Tone Analysis

Introduction

Good morning everyone!

It is good to see you all..... today is a wonderful new day!

And we have gathered to worship.

So today, we pray for the Lord to speak to us, for His presence to be with us here.

And most importantly, to change us.

Now lets think about today....

Today is Palm Sunday, and this is the celebration of Jesus and His triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem.

As Jesus came into the city, the people shouted and praised the Lord… they cried Hosanna… they would not be silent, for gave Him praise.

Remember when the religious leaders rebuked Jesus and told him to make those people stop shouting and praising the Lord??

He said if they were quite, the very rocks would cry out…

I tell you what… I do not want anything to cry out in my place!

That entry would be the beginning of the end of His personal ministry, in days Jesus would be arrested and accused to be a criminal, marched before many and finally sentenced to death.

Do you?

Now as Jesus enters the city, we know this … that entry would be the beginning of the end of His personal ministry, in days Jesus would be arrested and accused to be a criminal, marched before many and finally sentenced to death.

And our Lord would be beaten viciously and mocked, forced to carry to try and carry His cross, the instrument they would crucify Him too.

Today I want us to look at His death, all that happened that morning as Jesus is on the cross…

And then next week I want to focus on the resurrection.

Psalm 122:1-2

Jesus has been crucified, and finally after many hours on the cross, Jesus gives up His Spirit and it was finished.

The whole purpose for Jesus coming to earth was to die, to give His life as a ransom for sin.

So that the whole world

So today lets look at, examine Jesus on the cross and gain a better understanding of His death and the meaning of the cross.

So lets begin this morning … with this thought.

Think of what Jesus went through....

He was pierced.....

1. Pierced for our Transgressions

When I look at the life of my dear Savior as those Roman soldiers forced him to the place called Golgotha, we see that in the moments that pass, Jesus is crucified!

Jesus is already weak, Jesus is already weary....

All night he was marched, from place to place by the Jews seeking to gain the verdict of guilty.

From the High Priest to Pilate and from Pilate to Herod and then finally back to Pilate again...

The High Priest and those men of the law, they pushed and pushed threatening and condemning Pilate as he tried to turn Jesus away with only a whipping or scourging .

But finally they get their way and Jesus is condemned.

He is forced onto the cross and one by one… the hammer rings as it connects with those large iron spikes that would pin Jesus the cross.

It wasn’t enough that these evil men had slandered our Lord, it wasn’t enough that these evil men beat and whipped Jesus.

It wasn’t enough that they placed a crown of thorns upon His head..

And so they crucified our Lord.

And when I think of all that happened to Jesus on that day hours before the passover, I know this… this truth is certain - they fulfilled Scripture

He was pierced for our transgressions...

Why did all this take place, was it merely because of the religious leaders, because they didn’t like Jesus...

No.... Jesus had said he came to give his life as a ransom for sin....

Now looking back to ., the word ‘transgressions” is key… He was pierced because of our transgressions.....

Transgression means a violation of the law or a duty or a moral principle.

We were guilty of God’s law, we could not keep it, no one can…and so the law reveals to us that we are in need, guilty before God.

We are all sinners, lost, hopeless and helpless.

also says he was crushed for our iniquities ....

The word iniquity refers to wrong doings, so it speaks to the actions of man.

Consider the law of God, it lays down specific ways for us to live.

what to avoid and what we cannot do… and it what is found again… we are guilty.

We are lost....

He was pierced, He was crushed… and the penalty of sin was placed upon him.

Isaiah says that the Savior was chastised because of us.

All that was bad, sinful, guilty, all those issues that left us condemned,Jesus took our place…

The result is this… the punishment Jesus took, bore on his own body.

It brought us peace, and it brought us healing....

You see my friends, if Jesus had not died, we would have no hope, we would have no peace, we would have nothing.

But Jesus he was pierced for our sins, transgressions.

As we approach Easter, think about you, your life.

Think back over this past week, how have you lived, talked, walked in front of God and others...

Have you walked in a way that is pleasing to God…

And what if we have not.... then we are saying all He did doesn’t matter...

Live differently

Now lets come to a second thought...

2. A Sorrowful Cry....

When I examine the cross of Christ, as Jesus hung there being punished, literally , being put to death…

There is one point that is so sad...

It is hearing Jesus cry out on the cross for His Heavenly Father....

Look back with me at

So the Bible tells us at noon.

Noon was the 6th hour of the day.

At noon the world changed.

In what might have been the high point of the day we see the world is becoming dark.

The darkness made the earth be like night....

And it was like this for three hours… for three hours day had become might…wow, think of this....

Suddenly, the Roman Soldiers would have had to have fixed torches to light so that they could see, since darkness had invaded the land.

And about 3 hours later Jesus cries out...

The darkness that covered the face of the earth was real and it represents sin and death.

Jesus hangs there and in this dark world he cries out “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”

Suddenly.... we find Jesus and he feels alone...

He suddenly cannot feel the presence of the Father, of the Holy Spirit, whom He has always known in His life.

But please know that Jesus is not alone, God has not moved away from the Son....

Some might say that God has turned his back on the Son, that perhaps God may have moved away from the Son

But I do not think that is right....please know that Jesus may feel alone, but He is not alone, God has not moved away from the Son....

So what has happened....

Sin separates us from God…

Suddenly the prophetic words of the Psalmist

For the first time we see that Jesus is separated from the Father, he cannot feel Him, hear Him and He seems so alone.

And so he cries out why have you forsaken me.........

This is the state of the way natural man is, .... man is separated from God…

On this day, Jesus hangs on the cross, preparing to die as an atonement for sin.

So that the sins of the world might be forgiven, so that man would not have to hand in darkness.

Jesus was preparing to die for the sins of the world
