Introduction:
I. the Setting (v. 33)
II. the Conflict (v. 34 - 39) - over the IDENTITY of Jesus
Why does the identity of Jesus matter so much?
His identity would show if He is the “Anointed” One.
Is he the One that God had chosen to deliver His people?
Jeremiah 23:5 KJV 1900
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
, “If thou be the Son of God...”
It is the very identity of Christ that is being questioned in these moments, so as Luke pens this it is with the intent that people would see Jesus as the perfect God-Man and be sure of His identity.
Proposition: We must stop dragging our fee in recognizing who Jesus truly is! (believers & unbelievers alike)
Luke 24:25 KJV 1900
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

The Crucifixion of the Savior (v. 33)

the crucifixion calls us to recognize Jesus as Christ by type of death

the crucifixion was a torture by piercing.
Jesus was pierced by thorns on his head
Jesus was pierced by nails in his hands and feet
Jesus was pierced post mortem in his side -
Zechariah 12:10 KJV 1900
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, The spirit of grace and of supplications: And they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, And they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, And shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
the crucifixion was a torture that followed the striping of an individual
Isaiah 53:5 KJV 1900
But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.

the crucifixion calls us to recognize Jesus as Christ by association in death (v. 33)

Isaiah 53:12 KJV 1900
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, And he shall divide the spoil with the strong; Because he hath poured out his soul unto death: And he was numbered with the transgressors; And he bare the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
Recap: The crucifixion of the Savior

Application:

(1) If this is true, then stop looking for redemption in everything and everyone else.
Jesus was associated with thieves, though he thought it not robbery to be equal with God.
His willing associating and death with criminals points to the fact of Who He truly is.
Jesus was condemned as your substitution, if you will receive Him.
(2) For believers, it is shameful to think that you still hold barriers in class that Jesus destroyed by his cross.
Statements like, “We don’t associate with those kinds of people...
I don’t want my children to be influenced by the wrong crowd.
---- OR ----
We are not actively reaching out towards those who are completely different than us.
We don’t have anything in common.
We socially ostracize ourselves by sitting in secluded places and not going out of our way to engage others not like us.
We live so self-consciously that we cannot converse with others because we think they are thinking something about us.
Jesus hung on a cross naked so that you could have a security in Him that liberates you to engage others.
Recap: The crucifixion of the Savior - Do you have redemption in the crucified Savior? Does your life reflect this redemption?

The Conflict over the Savior (v. 34 - 39)

the conflict calls us to a recognition of deity - Father

As early as we can remember -
In the midst of his ministry - Luke

the conflict calls us to a recognition of fulfillment - (v. 34)

Forgive them...” -
Isaiah 53:12 KJV 1900
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, And he shall divide the spoil with the strong; Because he hath poured out his soul unto death: And he was numbered with the transgressors; And he bare the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
“cast lots” - - this song ends with an expectant declaration of the universal rule of Yahweh (Commentary of NT on OT)
Psalm 22:18 KJV 1900
They part my garments among them, And cast lots upon my vesture.

the conflict calls us to recognition or rejection of one key issue - if he be Christ (v. 35 - 39)

the conflict calls us to recognition of
Fulfillments
He saved others - Compare with
What were the people watching? “a worm”
“Chosen of God” - Compare with
This was an act of mockery from (cheap drink that was popular among lower ranks of society)
,
Both verses show the expectation that the Messiah could save himself
The people, soldiers, thieves, religious leaders…all were found to be questioning the identity of Jesus Christ.

Application:

Jesus, who had the ability to save himself, did not do so, in order that you, who could NOT save yourself would be saved.
(1) For your part as an unbeliever, he requires a response.
Romans 5:6 KJV 1900
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
(2) For your part as a believer, he calls us to continually realize this great truth through this tremendous irony.
Meaning: don’t place so much faith in your effort as a believer that you cannot live in grace and by grace.
Not living in grace means that you are constantly wondering if you did enough to make some other person happy with you.
He enables suffering for the salvation of the lost
Galatians 1:10 KJV 1900
For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
Not living by grace means that you hold contempt for those who do not do as much as you do or you think they should do. - This is the Martha mentality.
He enables faith in the Father, in the midst of turmoil

Recap: The Conflict over the Savior - is the Gospel powerful enough to save you? If so, live by the same faith. -

The Criminal and the Savior (v. 40 - 43)

the condemnation of the criminal calls us to recognize the innocence of Christ (v. 40 - 41)

the condemnation of the criminal calls us to repentance & entrance into a new kingdom (v. 42 - 43)

How do the scriptures speak of the kingdom?
It was the message of Jesus (it was present-tense) -
Matthew 4:17 KJV 1900
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
It was not of this world -
It was not of this world -
It is still a future completion -
It was the message of the apostles -
Acts 28:31 KJV 1900
Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
What exactly is the kingdom of God?
“It is God’s redemptive rule over his people.” [What is the Gospel? by Gilbert] - his kingship
Inclusion requires the right response to Jesus -
What Is the Gospel? A Response to the King

No, what was really astonishing about the gospel of Jesus was that this King died to save his people, that the Messiah turned out to be a crucified Messiah.

What is the message of the “gospel of the kingdom”? -
What Is the Gospel? A Response to the King

When Jesus talks about “the gospel of the kingdom,” his point is not just that the kingdom has come. It is that the kingdom has come and you can be included in it if you are united to Me, the King, by faith that I alone can save you from your sin.

What is the “kingdom life”? -
What does paradise” allude to?
It is the same term used for “garden” in
Eden is also used in an eschatalogical (end times) sense in
It is the abode of the righteous after death - thus this response is “judicial
Thus, the 1st Adam caused man to be thrust from the Paradise of God; but Christ in this declaration is the 2nd Adam bringing access to what was lost.
Thus, the 1st Adam caused man to be thrust from the Paradise of God; but Christ in this declaration is the 2nd Adam bringing access to what was lost.

Application:

For the unbeliever:
Repentance & Faith - two sides to the same coin:
Repentance is fundamentally a matter of the heart’s attitudes toward sin - Gilbert
What Is the Gospel? Repentance, the Flip Side of the Coin

Faith in Christ carries in itself a renunciation of that rival power that King Jesus conquered—sin

Matthew 6:24 KJV 1900
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Repentance, the way of life for the believer - , ,
Give yourself to true repentance instead of false repentance.
False repentance example: “I can’t believe I did that.”
True repentance by Thune: “Gospel-centered Life”
is oriented toWard god, not Me. :
Psalm 51:4 KJV 1900
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, And done this evil in thy sight: That thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, And be clear when thou judgest.
is Motivated by true godly sorroW and not Just selfisH regret. :
2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV 1900
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
is concerned WitH tHe Heart, not Just WitH ex- ternal actions.
Psalm 51:10 KJV 1900
Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me.
looks to Jesus for deliverance froM tHe pen- alty and poWer of sin.
Acts 3:19–20 KJV 1900
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:

The Creation and the Savior (v. 44 - 47)

the visible creation calls us to recognize the power of God in Christ (v. 44 - 45) -

Thallus (52AD)
Thallus is perhaps the earliest secular writer to mention Jesus and he is so ancient his writings don’t even exist anymore. But Julius Africanus, writing around 221AD does quote Thallus who previously tried to explain away the darkness occurring at Jesus’ crucifixion:
“On the whole world there pressed a most fearful darkness; and the rocks were rent by an earthquake, and many places in Judea and other districts were thrown down. This darkness Thallus, in the third book of his History, calls, as appears to me without reason, an eclipse of the sun.” (Julius Africanus, Chronography, 18:1)
If only more of Thallus’ record could be found, we might find more confirmation of Jesus’ crucifixion. But there are some things we can conclude from this account: Jesus lived, He was crucified, and there was an earthquake and darkness at the point of His crucifixion. - Cold Case Christianity Article
Peace be still
Mark 4:39 KJV 1900
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
…and their net brake
Luke 5:6 KJV 1900
And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

the spiritual creation calls us to recognize the entrance the new and living way for all (criminal, centurion, crowd…etc) (v. 46 - 47)

“Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit” -
This expresses the voluntary nature of Jesus’ death by showing submission to God’s will -
Isaiah 53:7 KJV 1900
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, Yet he opened not his mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, So he openeth not his mouth.
This expresses a proactive gesture of confidence that God will deliver him
It is also the Jewish King publicly killed. Why significant? ,
Both Jew & Gentile -
Romans 2:28–29 KJV 1900
For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Application:

Have you noted Jesus as the Lord of Creation, in that He created the heavens and the earth; he became the way to be a new creation in Him?
Turning over a new leaf will not be enough to have a relationship with God. You must recognize:
The Creator
The Rebellion
The Redemption
The Response required
The Recreation
For the believer, this should cause us to respond with overwhelming rejoicing and surrender -
Romans 11:33 KJV 1900
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Conclusion:

What response should you have because of the crucifixion of Jesus?
Possibly, you’ve prayed to receive Jesus; but you didn’t know what that really meant. Today, recognizing Jesus as the sovereign Lord of all creation, will you come and yield to Him?
What part has repentance & faith had in your life as a believer?
