Matthew 13:1–23 NASB95
1 That day Jesus went out of the house and was sitting by the sea. 2 And large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach. 3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, “Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 “Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. 6 “But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 “Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. 8 “And others fell on the good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 “He who has ears, let him hear.” 10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 12 “For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. 13 “Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 “In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, You will keep on hearing, but will not understand; You will keep on seeing, but will not perceive; 15 For the heart of this people has become dull, With their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes, Otherwise they would see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return, And I would heal them.’ 16 “But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17 “For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. 18 “Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road. 20 “The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 “And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 “And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”

I. Broadcasting the Secret (1-9)

Chapter 11-12 - the King is rejected. This is our time now. The king is not here now. It is an internal kingdom. [Like King David while King Saul was still in power].
Millennial Kingdom will come and the internal kingdom will become the external kingdom
So what happens before the 8 parables that describe the time of the kingdom from when it was rejected until it is outwardly fulfilled.
So what should we expect now in the internal kingdom now? 8 parables that describe the time of the kingdom from when it was rejected until it is outwardly fulfilled.

A. The Sower (1-3)

The stony ground was not ground filled with stones; it was what was common in Palestine, a thin skin of earth on top of an underlying shelf of limestone rock. The earth might be only a very few inches deep before the rock was reached. On such ground, the seed would certainly germinate; and it would germinate quickly, because the ground grew speedily warm with the heat of the sun. But there was no depth of earth; and, when it sent down its roots in search of nourishment and moisture, it would meet only the rock, and would be starved to death and quite unable to withstand the heat of the sun.
Matthew 13:7 NASB95
7 “Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out.

D. The Contaminated Ground (7)

Among the weeds

E. The Soft, Deep, and Clean Ground (8-9)

Matthew 13:8–9 NASB95
8 “And others fell on the good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 “He who has ears, let him hear.”
The Gospel of Matthew, Volume 2 The Sower Went out to Sow (Matthew 13:1–9, 18–23)

The Gospel of Matthew, Volume 2 The Sower Went out to Sow (Matthew 13:1–9, 18–23)

The good ground was deep and clean and soft

An average yield is 7.5 fold. A good crop was 10 fold.

II. Questioning the Secret (10-17)

Matthew 13:10–17 NASB95
10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted.

A. Understanding is Granted (10-12)

Matthew 13:10–12 NASB95
10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 12 “For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.

B. Hearts Are Dull (13-15)

Matthew 13:13–15 NASB95
13 “Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 “In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, You will keep on hearing, but will not understand; You will keep on seeing, but will not perceive; 15 For the heart of this people has become dull, With their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes, Otherwise they would see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return, And I would heal them.’

C. You Are Blessed (16-17)

Matthew 13:16–17 NASB95
16 “But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17 “For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
Matthew 13:

III. Explaining the Secret (18-23)

Matthew 13:18–23 NASB95

A. Stolen Life (18-19)

Matthew 13:1
Matthew 13:18–19 NASB95
18 “Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.
2 Corinthians 4:4 NASB95
4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Example:
Hard hearted, stiff necked people.
How does Satan snatch the seed away?
By false teachers, by the fear of man, by the pride of thinking they know it all, doubt, love of sin, procrastination.
Example:

B. Scorched Life (20-21)

Matthew 13:20–21 NASB95
20 “The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away.
Jumping on the Jesus band wagon. Emotional response to gospel. Wanted to get married to a Christian.
Example: Larry Davis at the Orrville GBC, Crowd of 4000 who were fed by Jesus until Jesus says that to follow after Him they must eat His flesh and drink His blood.
Persecution is way to weed out these so called believers.

C. Choked Life (22)

Matthew 13:22 NASB95
22 “And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
Hearts are still concerned about the things of the world. Wants riches, pleasure, personal concerns. Double minded. Come to church but never commit themselves to faithful service.
Example: Judas Iscariot

D. Abundant Life (23)

Matthew 13:23 NASB95
23 “And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”
Matthew 13:33 NASB95
33 He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”
Salvation is noted by fruit not by foliage.
Salvation is noted by fruit not by foliage.
The preparation of the soil is the key. Parents, this is why your work with your children is so important and so productive. [no matter how you prepare the soil of your children’s hearts, does not guarantee salvation of every child].
Some believers produce more fruit than others.
If the abundant crop is 10 fold, notice that true believer at the most basic level at least brings 30 fold. You don’t have to go around looking behind the leaves to find the fruit.
Salvation is noted by fruit not by foliage.
Example: Simon Peter, Zacheus, Mary Magdeline
What soil are you?
All of these are soil, they are all the same make-up. The issue is the condition of a person’s heart.
All of these are soil, they are all the same make-up. The issue is the condition of a person’s heart.
All of these will happen when you share the gospel, expect it!
Go and preach. As you do, you will get all four of these kinds of people. As you do, you will face an enemy. The issue is not the talent of the sower. Even a child can throw seed and it will
The more you sow the more response you will get. If you are only throwing one seed at time, it is going to be tough going.
Don’t give up, even hard soil can be broken up by the Holy Spirit even after the seed it sown.
