Introduction
As we prepare our hearts for God's Word, I summon your senses and invite your intellect to the book of Matthew chapter 23, verses 25 through 28.
It is there that the Holy Spirit has highlighted our context for our sermonic time together this evening.
Scripture
Scripture
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside of it may also become clean.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of the bones of the dead and every kind of impurity. In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Context
Context
In the text before us, Jesus is not having a polite conversation
He is issuing divine indictments!
He is not whispering sweet nothings
He is thundering holy somethings!
Jesus stands face to face with the most religious people of His day—the Pharisees.
These were the separated ones, the holy ones, the keepers of tradition!
They had the longest robes,
the loudest prayers,
and the best seats in the synagogue!
They looked like everything God wanted on the outside.
But Jesus pulls back the curtain and says, "I see what's really going on!"
He calls them hypocrites—and in the Greek, that word means an actor, a pretender, somebody playing a role that isn’t really them!
In Greek theater, actors would hold up masks to play different characters.
One mask for comedy & another mask for tragedy.
But when the play was over, they took off the mask and showed who they really were.
Jesus is saying, "You've turned your faith into a performance!"
You've got a mask for church and a mask for the house!
You've got a mask for the prayer meeting and a mask for the private moment!
And God is tired of the show!
I. The Problem: Clean Outside, Dirty Inside
I. The Problem: Clean Outside, Dirty Inside
Now, I need you to walk back with me to the Word in verse 25.
Matthew 23:25 CSB
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence."
Let me paint this picture for you, family.
In Jesus' day, ceremonial cleanliness was everything to a Pharisee.
They would wash their cups and dishes according to tradition.
They would scrub the outside until it sparkled, until it gleamed, until it looked good enough for company.
But Jesus looks at that shiny cup and says, "I see what's INSIDE!"
The outside is spotless, but the inside is filthy!
The presentation is perfect, but the contents are contaminated!
Let me make it plain this evening:
You can polish the outside all you want, but God is checking the inside!
There are some people that have a praise that looks good on Sabbath, but your heart is cold on Monday!
There are some people that have a shout of "Hallelujah" in the sanctuary, but whisper gossip in the parking lot!
There are some people that can lift holy hands in worship, but use those same hands to tear down their brother!
The Pharisees had perfected the art of impression management.
They knew how to look right without being right.
They knew how to appear holy without being holy.
And Jesus said, "WOE to you!"
II. The Deception: Beautiful Tombs, Dead Bones
II. The Deception: Beautiful Tombs, Dead Bones
Now watch verse 27
Jesus shifts His imagery and it gets even more intense.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of the bones of the dead and every kind of impurity.
Oh, this is a powerful picture!
In Israel, before Passover, they would whitewash the tombs outside the city.
Why?
So that pilgrims wouldn't accidentally touch a grave and become unclean.
The tombs looked beautiful
Bright white and gleaming in the sun!
But what was inside?
Dead men's bones and rotting flesh!
Jesus says, "That's what you are!"
Beautiful on the outside, but dead on the inside!
Attractive to the eye, but full of decay and decomposition!
Let me tell you something, family:
You can paint over death, but you cannot hide it from God!
You can cover up corruption with religious activity, but God sees through the whitewash!
You can dress up dysfunction with spiritual language, but heaven knows the truth!
III. The History: Israel's Two-Faced Problem
III. The History: Israel's Two-Faced Problem
Here's the theological thrust of the text:
This problem didn't start with the Pharisees—it goes all the way back!
The prophet Isaiah spoke of this same sickness centuries earlier.
The Lord said:
These people approach me with their speeches
to honor me with lip-service,
yet their hearts are far from me,
and human rules direct their worship of me.
God said, "Your words say one thing, but your heart says another!"
Your lips are in the temple, but your heart is in the world!
Your mouth is singing hymns, but your mind is plotting schemes!
Israel had a long history of two-faced living.
They would worship Jehovah on the Sabbath and bow to Baal on Monday!
They would offer sacrifices at the temple and then oppress the poor in the marketplace!
They would speak blessings with their lips and carry curses in their hearts!
And God said, "I'm sick of it!"
Their hypocrisy didn't just disappoint God—it led to their downfall!
When you say one thing and live another, you are building your house on sinking sand!
IV. The Danger: Duplicity Destroys
IV. The Danger: Duplicity Destroys
Now let me show you what the wisdom of God says about this.
The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the perversity of the treacherous destroys them.
Did you hear that?
The perversity,
the duplicity,
the two-faced living
it doesn't just hurt you,
it DESTROYS you!
It destroys your witness!
It destroys your relationships!
It destroys your peace!
It destroys your credibility!
It destroys your destiny!
When you're one person at church and another person at home, you're not fooling anybody but yourself!
Your children see it!
Your spouse sees it!
Your coworkers see it!
And most importantly, God sees it!
You can hide from the preacher,
but you can't hide from the Prophet!
You can fake out the congregation,
but you can't fake out the Creator!
V. The Promise: Integrity Brings Security
V. The Promise: Integrity Brings Security
But I didn't come to leave you in condemnation this evening
I came to show you the way out!
The one who lives with integrity lives securely,
but whoever perverts his ways will be found out.
When you walk in integrity, you walk in SECURITY!
You don't have to look over your shoulder!
You don't have to remember which lie you told to which person!
You don't have to worry about your secrets being exposed!
Because when you're the same person in public as you are in private, you've got nothing to hide!
Integrity means your INSIDE matches your OUTSIDE!
Integrity means your MONDAY matches your SABBATH!
Integrity means your WORDS match your WALK!
Integrity means you're the same person when nobody's watching as you are when everybody's watching!
Application
Application
Church, let me tell you something tonight
When God calls you to sincerity, He's calling you to FREEDOM!
See, the problem isn’t just what others see—it's what you're hiding!
That's what I want to anchor on tonight:
When God removes the mask from our faces,
when He exposes the duplicity in our hearts,
we can finally experience the freedom of living authentically!
Too many saints are exhausted from performing!
Too many believers are burnt out from pretending!
Too many Christians are worn out from wearing masks!
When your mask is on, you're living in bondage.
When your mask is on, you're carrying a weight you were never meant to bear.
When your mask is on, you can't receive the healing you desperately need.
When your mask is on, you're blocking the breakthrough you've been praying for.
But let me tell you—when God removes the mask, you'll find freedom you've never known!
When God removes the mask, you'll experience peace that passes understanding!
When God removes the mask, you'll discover that His grace is sufficient for your weakness!
When God removes the mask, you'll realize that authenticity is better than applause!
Notice this: Jesus didn't just expose the Pharisees—He gave them the solution.
He said in verse 26, "First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside of it may also become clean."
Oh, that's a whole word by itself!
Sometimes we're so busy managing our image that we neglect our integrity!
Sometimes we're so focused on looking good that we forget about BEING good!
Sincerity is not about perfection—it's about transparency!
It's about letting God see the real you so He can transform the real you!
It's about confessing your struggles instead of concealing them!
David understood this when he prayed in Psalm 139:23-24 CSB:
"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way."
David said, "God, I don't want to hide anything from You!"
Search my heart!
Test my thoughts!
Reveal my offensive ways!
That's the prayer of somebody who's done with the double life!
And don't miss this:
God doesn't just expose—He transforms!
The same God who reveals your hypocrisy is the God who removes your hypocrisy!
The same God who shows you your mask is the God who sets you free from wearing it!
In the beginning, the Pharisees looked clean but were dirty inside.
But by the time God gets through with you, you'll be clean INSIDE and OUT!
Closing
Closing
So I challenge you today, church!
Examine your heart and ask God to reveal any areas of duplicity!
Stop performing for people and start living for God!
Stop managing your image and start maintaining your integrity!
Let your words match your walk!
Let your public praise match your private prayer!
Let your Sabbath praise match your Monday living!
Proverbs 10:9 says if you live with integrity, you live SECURELY!
That means no more fear of exposure!
No more anxiety about your secrets!
No more torment from your two-faced living!
When you walk in integrity, you walk in PEACE!
When you walk in integrity, you walk in POWER!
When you walk in integrity, you walk in PURPOSE!
Tonight we need to cry out "Lord, make me REAL!"
You don't have to perform anymore!
You don't have to pretend anymore!
You don't have to wear the mask anymore!
God is calling you to SINCERITY!
God is calling you to AUTHENTICITY!
God is calling you to INTEGRITY!
No more clean cups with dirty hearts!
No more whitewashed tombs full of dead bones!
No more two-faced living in a world that needs to see the one true God!
Let your INSIDE match your OUTSIDE!
Let your PRIVATE life match your PUBLIC praise!
Let your HEART match your HALLELUJAH!
Because the God who sees in secret is ready to reward you openly!
The God who knows your hidden places is ready to heal your broken spaces!
The God who calls you to integrity is ready to walk WITH you in integrity!
You are not called to perform
You are called to be TRANSFORMED!
You are not called to pretend
You are called to be PURIFIED!
You are not called to wear masks
You are called to walk in TRUTH!
Be the same person everywhere!
Be the same person when nobody's watching!
Be the same person at home as you are at church!
And watch God honor a heart that's COMPLETELY His!
