Week 2: When Anger Goes Wrong
Week 2: When Anger Goes Wrong
Text: James 1:19–20
Have you ever been in an argument where you were absolutely convinced you were right?
Not just a little right… but completely right.
OH COME ON....WE ALL HAVE
Maybe it was with your spouse.
Maybe it was at work.
Maybe it was something online.
HOW ABOUT THIS......in that moment,
you weren’t just angry—you felt justified.
MAYBE You thought:
“They’re wrong.”
“This isn’t fair.”
“This shouldn’t be happening.”
And in that moment, your anger didn’t feel like a problem.
It felt like clarity.
It felt like strength.
like righteousness. But later—
maybe EVEN hours later,
maybe days later—you realized something.
Your anger didn’t fix anything.
It made things worse.
It damaged the relationship.
It escalated the situation.
It left YOU FEELING REGRET.
THIS IS exactly what James IS TALKING about IN SCRIPTURE.
LET’S READ
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
Point 1 — Anger Feels Right
Point 1 — Anger Feels Right
James tells us:
Be quick to listen.
Slow to speak.
Slow to become angry.
Why?
Because anger feels right.
Anger is one of the only emotions that convinces you.... that you are right.
I MEAN IN THE MIDDLE OF ANGER...
You don’t say:
“I might be wrong.”
You say:
“They’re wrong.”
Anger CAN give you:
certainty
urgency
clarity
But here’s the danger:
Clarity doesn’t always mean accuracy.
(Pause)
Have you ever noticed… in an argument…
both people think they’re right?
I MEAN I’M SURE NON OF THE MARRIED COUPLES KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT....BUT
IT’S TRUE....THIS HAPPENS APPARENTLY....LOL
Both people feel justified.
Both people are convinced the other person is the problem.
I’VE NEVER FELT THIS.....BUT I HEARD IT’S TRUE
the question SHOULD not BE:
“Do I feel ...right?”
The question SHOULD BE:
“Is my anger producing what God desires?”
20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
🔥 Greek Insight
🔥 Greek Insight
That phrase “HUMAN ANGER” means:
“the anger that belongs to man.”
IT’S The anger that comes naturally.
The anger that rises instinctively.
James is saying:
What feels natural to you....
does not produce what God desires.
THINK ABOUT THAT.....
“Anger makes you loud…
but it rarely makes you right.”
(Pause)
Point 2 — Anger Comes From the Heart
Point 2 — Anger Comes From the Heart
1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?
WHAT CAUSES THE FIGHTS AMONG YOU?
Not people.
Not circumstances.
Not stress.
IT’S your desires.
OH MY LORD....HELP US TODAY..
CHURCH.....
Anger is not just a reaction—it’s a revelation.
We say THINGS LIKE:
“They made me angry.”
But WHAT scripture IS SAYING IS:
“They revealed what was already there.”
34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
“There is an anger that will show you what you bow to.
OH COME ON SOMEBODY....SOMEBODY NEEDS TO HEAR THIS.....
Anger will reveal what you worship.
OH COME ON....LISTEN TO ME.....
If comfort is your god -
inconvenience makes you angry.
If control is your god -
change makes you angry.
If pride is your god…
correction makes you angry.
If politics is your god…
truth will make you angry.”
OH COME ON, SOMEBODY NEEDS TO HEAR THIS
THE Big Idea IS THIS
THE Big Idea IS THIS
“You don’t get angry over things you’ve surrendered…
You get angry over things you’re trying to protect.”
(Pause)
🔥 Biblical Example — Saul
🔥 Biblical Example — Saul
IN 1 Samuel 18
Saul becomes angry when David is praised.
Why?
Because his identity was threatened.
His anger revealed what he worshiped:
IT WAS his own glory BEING THREATENED THAT MADE HIM ANGRY
THINK ABOUT IT.....
🔥 Biblical Example — Older Brother
🔥 Biblical Example — Older Brother
IN Luke 15 (PRODIGAL SON)
THE OLDER BROTHER becomes angry at grace.
Why?
Because he believed he deserved more.
His anger revealed self-righteousness.
OH COME ON SOMEBODY....

JOHN WARNS US AS BELIEVERS IN......
21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
CHURCH....
“Anger doesn’t just show you what’s wrong around you…
It shows you what’s ruling within you.”
Point 3 — Anger Destroys Through Words
Point 3 — Anger Destroys Through Words
5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
“Anger lasts minutes.
Words last years.”
(Pause)
Some of you SITTING HERE TODAY
CAN still remember words spoken years ago.
Words spoken in anger.
And they stayed.
🔥 Biblical Example — Moses
🔥 Biblical Example — Moses
IN Numbers 20:1-12
1 In the first month the whole Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.
2 Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron. 3 They quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the Lord! 4 Why did you bring the Lord’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here? 5 Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!”
6 Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. 7 The Lord said to Moses, 8 “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.”
9 So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him. 10 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”
The miracle still happens.
But God says:
You will not enter the Promised Land.

“One moment of anger.
One moment of words spoken wrongly.
And it cost him something significant.”

OH MY LORD....LISTEN TO ME CHURCH
“Anger doesn’t just affect the moment…
It can alter the direction of your ENTIRE life.”
And if we’re honest…
Some of us have been that person.

5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
OH MY LORD.....I LOVE THIS.....
HE HEALS THE MAN EVEN IN HIS ANGER
WHICH TELLS ME....
Jesus was angry.
But He was in control.
LETS LOOK AT DAVID.....
🔥 Biblical Example — David
🔥 Biblical Example — David
1 Samuel 24:3–7
David had every reason to be angry.
Saul was trying to kill him.
And yet…
He chose restraint.

THE POINT IS THIS.....
“David had anger…
But anger didn’t have David.”

IT’S PROVEN BY how well you remain under control.”
DAVID WAS ANGRY.....HE HAD THE OPORTUNITY TO END SAULS LIFE
BUT DAVID REMAINED IN CONTROL
