Intro

Last week we discussed the preparation that God did in the Israelites:
God said to:
Clean up
Ready up
Listen up
Then God made the Display...
Thunders
Lightning
Thick cloud
Voice of a trumpet exceeding loud
Mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke
Now we proceed into chapter 20 for what God was preparing Israel for in chapter 19...
Exodus 20:1–6 KJV 1900
1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Introduction to the 10 commandments:
These 10 commandments (there will be much more than this) were given by God to Israel as a set of laws for Israel to keep
9 of the 10 are repeated in the new testament - excluding keeping of the Sabbath
These laws were never a means of salvation for Israel
Remember: we are not under the law, but under grace
That doesn’t mean the law is useless
Romans 6:14 KJV 1900
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Romans 7:6 KJV 1900
6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
Galatians 2:16–21 KJV 1900
16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Romans 3:19–20 KJV 1900
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Galatians 3:24 KJV 1900
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
There were 10 plagues and now there are 10 commandments

1. God Begins by stating his Authority

Exodus 20:2 KJV 1900
2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
This is God’s stamp of reason why He is about to say what he is about to say...
**You will never appreciate or honor your calling from God until you acknowledge His authority over you...
Until you are willing to admit that you’re life is not yours, than you are not ready to hear from God…
God had the authority and position to be able to tell Israel what the law they must keep is…
Had he been anyone but God Himself, the authority to rule an entire people under the laws dictated by Him alone would not have worked…
The 10 commandments is a law of God’s making...
Back in August last year I preached a message to you titled, “Under What Authority”…
We looked at the times when people questioned Jesus’ authority for doing what He did and saying what He said…
“God is self-existent, eternal, all-powerful; therefore, He has an incontestable right to command us.”
Regarding Israel, they owed their service to whom they owed their freedom...

2. God demands Exclusivity

Exodus 20:3 KJV 1900
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
If God gets obedience here, it is more likely He will get obedience through the other commandments as well…
But we don’t pass go or collect $200 without first obeying this command…
It is fitting that the beginning of the laws and commands God gives Israel began with what would be their besetting sin...
In future commandments, God will talk about things regarding our neighbor...
But they had to love their maker, before they could love their neighbor...
“It cannot be expected that he should be true to his brother who is false to his God.”
Think about this quote:
“Pride makes a god of self, covetousness makes a god of money, sensuality makes a god of the belly; whatever is esteemed or loved, feared or served, delighted in or depended on, more than God, becomes a god...
a.) Exclusivity in what we make
Exodus 20:4 KJV 1900
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
b.) Exclusivity in what we bow too
Exodus 20:5 KJV 1900
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
c.) Exclusivity in what we serve
Exodus 20:5 KJV 1900
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
God will reiterate this to Moses after speaking the 10 commandments:
Exodus 20:22–23 KJV 1900
22 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.
Exclusivity...

3. New Testament Examples

29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Matthew 4:10 KJV 1900
