On The Cross

Jesus at 9 in the morning the third hour on Jewish time is hung on the cross to die
Jesus has voluntarily allowed Himself to be taken, beaten, hung on the most tortuous way of execution
He has done this because of His love for the Father in Heaven
He has done this for the love of His people
He has done this so that the Father could be glorified through the salvation of people
The Father was glorified with the salvation of one of the thieves that hung with Jesus that day
we are not going to look at all that went on we will just concentrate on what happened in the account of Luke

The 6th Hour

V 44
Jesus has been on the cross for 3 hours now
the really bad stuff is beginning.
this is where God the Father is going to pour his wrath upon Jesus because the Father is piling on to His son all of the sin of everybody who will be saved.
The punishment you and I deserve
this same punishment that those who do not come to Jesus for salvation is going to endure in the lake of fire for an eternity
this is the cup that Jesus did not want to endure
this cup of the wrath of the Father poured out on His son instead of those who will be saved
V 44 darkness over the earth this darkness concealed the agony that Jesus was experiencing
darkness that represented the judgement against sin, our sin.
2 Corinthians 5:21 LSB
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Isaiah 53:6 LSB
All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But Yahweh has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
1 Peter 2:24 LSB
Who Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that having died to sin, we might live to righteousness; by His wounds you were healed.
Galatians 3:13 LSB
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—
those who put their faith in Jesus their curse is taken away
their wounds of sin is healed and then become righteous
all of this because the Father put on His only son our sin that He would die and take away our second death

The Ninth Hour

V 45
the veil is torn in two
Spurgeon - As if shocked at the sacrilegious murder of her Lord, the temple rent her garments, like one stricken with horror at some stupendous crime. It is not a slight rent through which we may see a little; but it is rent from the top to the bottom. There is an entrance made for the greatest sinners. If there had only been a small hole cut through it, the lesser offenders might have crept through; but what an act of abounding mercy is this, that the veil is rent in the midst, and rent from top to bottom, so that the chief of sinners may find ample passage!”
we no longer need to go through a priest to come to God for forgiveness
we no longer have to come to the temple to pray at the time of prayer
we no longer are separated from the throne room of God
Jesus made the temple obsolete
John 4:21 LSB
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
the place we now worship in in our hearts and lives
we worship through our spirit
Jesus cries with a loud megaphone voice
V 46
Jesus with a supernatural voice commits his death and His spirit to the Father
His trust is in the Father to bring Him back from the grave
Dr Truman Davis describes crucifixion from a medical standpoint - The left foot is now pressed backward against the right foot, and with both feet extended, toes down, a nail is driven through the arch of each, leaving the knees moderately flexed. The Victim is now crucified. As He slowly sags down with more weight on the nails in the wrists, excruciating (LATIN - "OUT OF THE CROSS") pain shoots along the fingers and up the arms to explode in the brain — the nails in the wrists are putting pressure on the median nerves. As He pushes Himself upward to avoid this stretching torment, He places His full weight on the nail through His feet. Again there is the searing agony of the nail tearing through the nerves between the metatarsal bones of the feet.  At this point, as the arms fatigue, great waves of cramps sweep over the muscles, knotting them in deep, relentless, throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push Himself upward. Hanging by his arms, the pectoral muscles are paralyzed and the intercostal muscles are unable to act. Air can be drawn into the lungs, but cannot be exhaled. Jesus fights to raise Himself in order to get even one short breath. Finally, carbon dioxide builds up in the lungs and in the blood stream and the cramps partially subside. Spasmodically, he is able to push Himself upward to exhale and bring in the life-giving oxygen. (A Physician's View of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ)
V 47
the centurion saw Jesus with a loud voice
a person who is almost dead on the cross only whispers
a person has to push up with their legs to be able to breathe
the weaker they get the less they can push sometimes lasting for 3 days
but this centurion heard the yells of Jesus then Jesus died. Both of these things are not normal for a person to be able to yell like this and then just die.
From the time that Jesus was nailed to the cross without a fight to the time that Jesus died.
and only six hours on the cross was not normal and this Centurian realize that Jesus was God.
V 48
Beating your chest was a symbol or sign of morning. The people also realize that this was the son of God on the cross.
Possibly these were the people that would hear Peter preach on the day of Pentecost and get saved.
V50-54
This Joseph of Arimathea was one of the Sanhedrin, but he did not consent to killing Jesus. He was a secret disciple of Jesus.
So when Jesus died, he went to pilot to ask for the body because he had prepared a tomb for Jesus near Mount Calvary
And it was getting towards evening so they had to do things quick and they were gonna come back on Sunday morning because it was getting evening of the Sabbath
V 55-56
And the women who were there watching Jesus die the women that were followers of Jesus they watched to see where Jesus was buried
And then they had to go home that night for the Sabbath.
And this is where we will leave them and pick it up next week on resurrection Sunday
