In this message, we explore one of the most personal and comforting names of Jesus: The Good Shepherd (John 10:11). Using relatable imagery—like babysitting, responsibility, and trust—we unpack what a shepherd truly does and why Jesus chose this title for Himself. Sheep are vulnerable, easily lost, and completely dependent on their shepherd—just like us apart from Christ. We’ll contrast the Good Shepherd with the hired hand (John 10:11–13), revealing how addictions, bad habits, and misplaced trust promise life but abandon us when danger comes. Jesus, however, proves He is different—feeding us spiritually, guiding our steps, protecting us from sin, and laying down His life for us. Through Scripture from Proverbs, Psalms, and Philippians, this sermon calls us to examine who is leading our lives and challenges us to fully trust Jesus—the One who never leaves, never uses us, and never lets us go. Key Texts: John 10:11–13; Proverbs 3:5; Psalm 37:23–24; Philippians 4:6–7 Main Question: Who is leading you, feeding you, and shaping your life—and are you ready to trust the Good Shepherd?

*explain series*
today i want to share really quickly about one of God’s names: The Good Shepherd
John 10:11 CSB
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Lets Pray

THE TENSION - starting point

who or what is leading your life right now?
introduce title
explain what we will explore:
What is a Shepherd?
Why Jesus calls himself a shepherd
What the means for us

WHAT IS A SHEPHERD

who has had to babysit someone before?
its responsibility
can be difficult to get kids to listen
take a while to build trust
Shepherds have to take care of animals who are pretty much babies that look like big clouds
sheep are defenseless
their only strategy of survival is to stick together and hope for the best
like a baby you would babysit, a shepherd would....
make sure the baby is safe
make sure the baby is fed
dont let the baby make a dumb decision
guide the baby into safety
(baby and a power socket = sheep and a well or cliff)
if the shepherd was not around, there wouldn't be any sheep at all
that makes them so important for when we have sheep
now lets think of ourselves as the sheep and the whole analogy makes more sense.
so when we look at the traits of Jesus, he is definitely a shepherd to us
he feeds us spiritually
he guides our steps
he protects us from the enemy and from sin
as sheep we walk around lost in life sometimes

THE HIRED HAND VS THE GOOD SHEPHERD

John 10:11–13 CSB
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them and runs away when he sees a wolf coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. This happens because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care about the sheep.
The hired hand
runs when danger comes
doesnt truly care for the sheep
is there just to be paid
this is our vices and addictions.
its our bad habits and some of the people we call friends
those things in our life use us until we are of no longer use to them
you expect those things to feed your soul, to guide you in life, and to protect you, but they end up just using you up
this is the complete opposite of who our God is.
The bible tells us that God’s creation is evidence of himself,
this makes sense to me when i think about how all of us at one point or another in our life feel this strong desire that there’s more to life than just to wake up, work, eat, date, and then die.
I want to tell you that the god sized hole you feel can only be filled by God who is a good shepherd to us, his sheep.
we make mistakes
but God loves
God guides
God forgives
everything else we try to fill that void becomes the hired hand
someone who was supposed to protect us but let us down
someone who was supposed to guide us, but showed up only to get paid
someone who was supposed to feed us, but makes us feel even more empty
So if Jesus is the Good shepherd we need to trust him if we want to be free from the hired hand
so what does this mean for us?
it means we can trust in Jesus. he will fill us, take care of us, and guide us, we just need to trust him first.
We all know what it feels like when something we trusted lets us down… but thankfully, Jesus is different. He’s the one who never leaves us.

TRUST THE SHEPHERD

the bible tells us this in proverbs 3:5
Proverbs 3:5 CSB
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding;
and then in Psalms 37:23-24 says this:
Psalm 37:23–24 CSB
A person’s steps are established by the Lord, and he takes pleasure in his way. Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed, because the Lord supports him with his hand.
put your trust in him and he’ll guide you.
Philippians 4:6–7 CSB
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
God answers your prayers in 3 ways:
yes
no
not yet
he does this to protect you, and as you learn to pray to him you’ll find comfort and peace and you’ll begin to see everything in your life appear different.

CLOSING

so who leads you?
what feeds you?
