[[They went each to his own house, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”]]

[[They went each to his own house, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
The Sanhedrin
The Multitude
Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.
Jesus returns to the temple
He teaches those who are there
The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst
The scribes and Pharasees - they enter and cause a disturbance
Her arrest may have been ordered by the temple-police
The original words infer that she was a married woman who had been caught in adultery
This woman becomes a tool in their hatred of Jesus
They have a murderous intent towards Jesus and are willing to stone her to death in order to entrap Jesus
they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”
“Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery”
“Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such a woman”
“So what do you say?”
This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.
“They said this to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him”
If Jesus agrees, then he affirms the consequence of the more serious law against blasphamy
Yet, the reality was the Roman empire did not permit them to execute anyone
Do he would also be in breach of Roman Law - sedition / treason
If Jesus disagrees, then he justifies sin against God
An enemy of the Law of Moses /God
A trangressor who would lose his influence with the people
“Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground”
We don’t know what Jesus wrote
Names and sins of the men?
A warning aimed at the Scribes and Pharisees?
Or was it a pause for effect?
Tablets of 10 Commandments - written with the finger of God
Belshazzar - finger wrote on the plaster
Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin
Meaning the days of the kingdom are numbered, they have been weighed and found wanting, and it will be divided destoryed
And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.
As they continued to ask him
He stood up and said to them
“Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”
And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground
But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.
When they heard it, they went away one by one
Beginning with the older ones
Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him
Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
Be impressed upon her the great favor he had bestowed upon her
The sentence of condemnation, through demanded by the Law of Moses, had not been pronounced against her by anyone
“Where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”]]
“No one, Lord”
“Neither do I condemn you; go and from now on sin no more”
