Sunday’s Matter
Sunday’s Matter
Psalm 118:22-24
Blue Laws
Blue Laws
Local regulations that prohibit certain activities.
These are for Sundays
Metropolis has some laws.
Big Johns announced they can now sell beer and wine.
You can drink Monday through Saturday. But on Sunday it’s sinful.
I believe the thinking is this – Sunday should be a day of worship.
Not work no recreation attend church.
For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
If you really want to get technical this is for Saturday.
But some have changed the meaning of “Sabbath Day”
This is a matter of personal conviction.
It is far from that now.
People used to hide in their homes on Sunday.
Many ball diamonds are full on Sunday morning.
People will be mowing their grass on your way home.
Don’t forget fishing and hunting.
I’ve heard of people doing their taxes on Sunday morning.
What does is matter.
It matters because Sunday matters.
Psalm 118:22–24 (NLT) — 22 The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see. 24 This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.
The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.
This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.
“It’s Sunday… and everything changed on a Sunday!”
The resurrection is not just an event—it’s a declaration.
Psalm 118 was written long before the cross, yet it points straight to it.
The Rejected Stone
“The stone that the builders rejected”
The builders here are the religious leaders of that day.
Jesus was rejected by these religious leaders. He was mocked, beaten, and crucified.
The wicked farmers
Builds a vineyard, lease farm to farmers.
The owner sends his servant to collect the rent – they kill him
Then the son – they kill him.
Then the owner returns and pours out justice.
Jesus was talking about the religious leaders of his day.
But he quotes this passage.
Then Jesus asked them, “Didn’t you ever read this in the Scriptures? ‘The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.’
People still reject Jesus today.
People still reject Jesus today.
Too exclusive
Too demanding
Too convicting
What man rejects, God often chooses.
The Cornerstone
“Now become the cornerstone.”
The cornerstone = the most important stone in the building
Sets direction
Holds everything together.
Ephesians 2:20 (NLT) — 20 Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.
Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.
Why Sunday matters.
Why Sunday matters.
See the resurrection connection.
The stone they rejected. CROSS
The God resurrected the rejected stone.
Sunday is a celebration of that resurrection
Make it real.
Make it real.
What is your life built on?
What foundation are you laying down?
For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’
There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
Like the old hymn
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
The Lord’s Doing
The Lord’s Doing
“This was the Lord’s doing…”
Jesus’ death was not accidental—it was intentional.
God had orchestrated his death and resurrection for the beginning.
“Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?”
Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
What looked like defeat… was actually God’s greatest victory.
Make it More Real.
Make it More Real.
Why does Sunday matter?
In your life
What seems broken…
What seems like defeat…
God is still working—even when you don’t see it.
“Don’t judge God’s plan on Friday… when Sunday is coming!”
Sunday is for celebration.
There is victory in Jesus because that victory was won in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.
Why does Sunday matter?
Why does Sunday matter?
“This is the day the Lord has made…” v:24
Sunday ain’t Monday Tuesday
Sunday is resurrection day.
Sunday is for celebration
This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.
Because of the Resurrection:
Because of the Resurrection:
You have hope…
You have forgiveness…
You have a future…
This is the day the Lord has made
Not just a day on the calendar, but the day that changed eternity.
Not a day to be taken for granted.
Today can be your day.
Today can be your day.
A day to believe
A day to surrender
A day to have hope
A day to rejoice
Lay down your burdens – be raised to a new hope (today is a new day)
Lay down your broken heart – and let God give you a heart of joy (let the Holy Spirit fill your soul)
Lay down your hurts – and find healing (by his wounds we are healed)
Lay down your habits – and find new life; released for bondage
