The Lord has need of it.

Need

What does it mean to need something. If all I had was myself, I would be in big trouble. I need simple things, like water, food, and air. I need love, connection, and a sense of belonging.

Now, try to imagine that you didn’t need anything. God, in his limitlessness, does not need. He is. He declares who He is to Moses in Exodus 3:14

Exodus 3:14 ESV

14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”

In verse 15 He tells Moses His name:

15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

I Am : Ehyeh

He is : YHWH (Yahweh)

God does not need anything. He is and He exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in perfect community.

In todays passage, Jesus will say that the Lord has need of something. This should stand out to us. For truly, the Lord does not need anything. So let’s take a look at our text today and talk about what God means when He “needs” something.

Luke 19:28–40 ESV

28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Fulfilling the Will of God

God uses mundane means to accomplish His divine purposes.

From colts of donkeys, to cloaks and palm branches, God draws the hearts of the people to call out to Him for salvation.

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

God has chosen to accomplish His purpose, He has chosen to need you.

Romans 10:14–17 ESV

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
