Primary Passage:

John 3:1–21

Big Idea:

The only way to enter God’s kingdom is not through religion or effort, but through a new birth from above—received by believing in Jesus Christ.

Introduction:

John 3 is one of the most familiar passages in Scripture—but familiarity often breeds misunderstanding
The central question: What qualifies a person for heaven?
Nicodemus represents the best of religion—and still comes up short
Transition to Point 1: Before Jesus tells us how to be saved, He first shows us why we are not.

I. The World’s Greatest Tragedy

The Problem: (X) Religion Cannot Save You

A. Nicodemus Had Everything Religion Offers

Pharisee (zealous law-keeper)
Ruler (influence, authority)
Teacher (deep biblical knowledge)

B. Yet Jesus Confronts Him

“Unless one is born again…”
Jesus dismantles his entire foundation

C. The Root Problem: Our Nature

We are not sinners because we sin—we sin because we are sinners
Born into sin (Psalm 51:5)
Dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1–3)
Cannot please God (Romans 8:7–8)

D. External Religion Cannot Fix Internal Corruption

Matthew 23:27 “27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.”
Isaiah 64:6 “6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”

Key Truth:

Religion can inform you, reform you, and restrain you—but it cannot regenerate you.

Application:

Are you trusting in:
Church attendance?
Moral behavior?
Knowledge of Scripture?
None of those can save you
AskAm I relying on what I’ve done—or what Christ has done?
Transition to Point 2: If religion isn’t enough, then what is? Jesus gives a shocking answer: … you need an entirely new life.

II. The World’s Greatest Truth

The Solution: You Must Be Born Again

John 3:3 “3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.””

A. The New Birth Is Required

“Unless…” — exclusive language
John 14:6 “6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Acts 4:12 “12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.””

B. The New Birth Is Spiritual

Not physical (Nicodemus’ confusion)
“Born of water and the Spirit”
Ezekiel 36:25–27 “25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

C. The New Birth Is a Work of God

Titus 3:5 “5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,”
Like the wind—sovereign and unseen

D. It Is Total Transformation

2 Corinthians 5:17 — new creation
New desires, new affections, new direction

Key Truth:

Christianity is not about turning over a new leaf—it’s about receiving a new life.

Application:

Have you experienced transformation—or just modification?
Do you have:
New desires for God?
New sensitivity to sin?
New love for truth?
New relationship to the church? / People of God?
It’s possible to look like a Christian and still not be born again.
Transition to Point 3: But how does this new birth actually happen? Jesus now moves from the necessity of salvation to the means of salvation.

III. The World’s Greatest Text

The Means: Salvation Comes By Grace Though Faith

A. The Barrier: Unbelief

Hebrews 11:6 — without faith it is impossible to please God
John 5:40 — “you refuse to come to me”
Unbelief is not intellectual—it is moral

B. The Picture: The Bronze Serpent

Numbers 21:8–9 — look and live
Simple, immediate, personal

C. The Gospel: John 3:16

Romans 5:8 — God demonstrates His love
1 John 4:9–10 — love shown through sending His Son

D. The Purpose of Christ

Luke 19:10 — seek and save the lost
2 Corinthians 5:21 — substitutionary atonement

E. What It Means to Believe

Not just knowledge (James 2:19)
Trust + surrender + dependence

Key Truth:

Salvation is not achieved—it is received through faith in Jesus Christ.

Application:

What are you trusting in right now?
Yourself?
Your past decisions?
Your goodness?
Or Christ alone?
Faith is not “trying harder”—it is “trusting fully.”
Transition to Point 4: Once Jesus explains belief, He presses deeper—not just what we believe, but why people reject Him.

IV. The World’s Greatest Test

The Response: Light or Darkness

A. The Real Issue Is the Heart

People don’t reject Christ for lack of evidence
They reject Him because they love sin

B. The Light Has Come

John 1:9 — the true light
John 8:12 — Jesus is the light of the world

C. Two Responses:

Reject the Light
Hide sin
Resist truth
Come to the Light
Repent
Walk in truth
Ephesians 5:11–13 — light exposes darkness

Key Truth:

Your response to Jesus reveals what you truly love.

Application:

Are you avoiding God’s truth in any area?
Are you:
Hiding sin?
Justifying sin?
Delaying obedience?
Coming to Christ means stepping into the light fully.
Transition to Point 5: And this leads to the final reality—your response doesn’t just reveal your heart; it determines your eternity.

The Result: Forgiveness or Condemnation

A. The Result of Belief

Eternal life (John 17:3)
No condemnation (Romans 8:1)
Peace with God (Romans 5:1)

B. The Result of Unbelief

Already condemned
John 3:36 — wrath remains
2 Thessalonians 1:8–9 — eternal destruction

C. The Urgency of Decision

Hebrews 9:27 — appointed to die once
No neutral ground

Key Truth:

There are only two outcomes: eternal life or eternal judgment.

Application:

This is not theoretical—it is personal
Where do you stand today?
If you died today, would you be in Christ—or still in your sin?

Conclusion:

Nicodemus had:
Religion
Knowledge
Morality
Influence
…and it wasn’t enough.
Jesus brings it all down to one truth:

“You must be born again.”

Final Call:

Not:
Try harder
Be better
Do more
But:
Believe in Christ
Trust in His finished work
Receive new life from above
Small Group Questions
Why do you think Nicodemus represents “the best of religion,” and why was that still not enough according to Jesus?
The sermon says, “We are not sinners because we sin—we sin because we are sinners.” What does that mean, and why is that important to understand?
The outline says religion can inform, reform, and restrain you—but cannot regenerate you. What are some ways people today trust in religion instead of new birth?
Jesus says, “You must be born again.” What do you think it actually means to be born again? How is that different from just trying to be a better person?
The new birth is described as a work of God, not something we do ourselves. Why is that hard for people to accept?
Read John 3:16 together. According to this passage, what does it mean to “believe” in Jesus? How is belief more than just knowing facts?
The sermon says unbelief is not just intellectual but moral. What do you think that means? Do you agree or disagree?
Jesus says people love darkness rather than light. Why do people avoid the light? What are some ways people try to hide from God?
The outline says there are only two outcomes: eternal life or eternal judgment. Why do people try to believe there is a “middle ground”?
The final question of the sermon is very personal: What are you trusting in right now—yourself, your goodness, your past decisions, or Christ alone? How would you answer that honestly?
