As we come into Holy I struggle with what to preach on
Should I preach on Jesus coming into Jerusalem or should I continue on with Acts
Yes Easter is important and yes we should be celebrating the fact that Jesus rose from the grave all year
So I got to thinking
Then I really enjoyed what Mike had to say last week
He was talking about Missions and when we think Missions we think a planned trip outside of the county
However church we are to be on missions here and now
When we look through Acts we see a church on Mission
We see individual's on Missions
Missions is not something out of sight out of mind
Then I went back to thinking about what to preach
This is where I landed
Jesus is coming into Jerusalem
Jerusalem was a dangerous place for Jesus
In John 10 at the Feast of Dedication the Religous Elite picked up stones to stone Jesus
It says that he eluded them and went out of Jerusalem
Jesus knows going to Jersualem is going to be dangerous
He knows what will happen
32 They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him, 33 saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34 “They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”
I like how it says it in Mark
Matthew also notes this and so does Luke
But in Mark he shares how those who were following Jesus as they were walking to Jerusalem were fearful
They probably sensed things might now go so well
And then Jesus shares what He knows
He says we are going to Jersualem
The Son of Man
That is Jesus he must be delievered over to to the chief priest and scribes
They will sentence Him to death and then he will be turned over to the Gentiles
And he will be mocked, spit on and scourged
They will kill Him
COMA
Just like the word but
That coma puts a pause on things unlike a period
I know this is the enlgish text and I don’t know if they have coma’s in hebrew but I appreciate what the coma all be it small and sometimes overlooked
It means they will kill him pause
That doesn’t mean that is the end of the story church
He goes on to say that 3 days after he is killed he will rise again
Lets try and wrap our minds around the fact
Jesus is going to Jerusalem to die
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
This is about Jesus
The lamb of God is going to be slatered to atone for our sin once and for
And church we aren’t even to the trial or the death of Jesus
He is not even in Jerusalem yet and we should be so over come with awe that He willingly went to Jersualem knowing it would cost Him his life
Know that the Father would turn His back and forsake Him because He Jesus took on humanities sin
Last week Mike talked about obedience to God
What a beautiful picture of what it means to be obedient to God the Father
Jesus is the example of true obedience to the Lords will
We like to think oh yea I would so do that for my family or the people I love
As you will see church Jesus willingly went to Jersualem for everyone
That Jesus loves the lost and the believer
Because at one point you and I were lost and Jesus loved us that much that he willingly went into Jerusalem because of His great love for you and I
Church they were going to celebrate the Passover
Which was a festival they were celebrate because the Lord passed over those house in Egypt who had sacrificed a lamb and were covered by the blood
You had to sacrifice a lamb
Jesus was coming to be the lamb of God sacrificed for you and I
So Jesus comes into Jerusalem is an interesting way
1 When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. 3 “If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold your King is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ” 6 The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, 7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats.
Jesus rides in on a donkey
Not just any donkey but a colt which is a baby or very young donkey
So much that the apostles brought the mom donkey with them to help keep the young donkey calm as Jesus road on it
Jesus sent them in to town and to bring it back
They go in and found it just like Jesus had said and answer the guy just like Jesus said
At what point do you need further proof that Jesus is the Son of God
To think of everything they had experienced
To think of everything the other people had experienced
This all happened as the Prophet say Zechariah said
The King is coming and with Him salvation
But Jesus is coming to seek and save those who are lost
Those who are broken and in need of savior
An yet they missed the fact that salvation Himself was coming into town
They saw a really good teacher riding on a colt donkey
That The King is coming humbly and not with a sword like a warrior king would like David did on a horse
So Jesus wasn’t coming to kick the Romans out but rather Jesus was coming to defeat death once and for
And as he is riding on the colt donkey
I can’t imagine that would have been a comfortable ride
So the disciples and others helped him
7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats. 8 Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. 9 The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!” 10 When He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.”
As Jesus is riding on the colt donkey
His disciples spread their coats on the colt donkey to give Him some comfort
After all He is the King
This is how Kings entered their city
People are giving the colt something soft to walk on as well
As Jesus is coming into the Jerusalem there is excitment and wonder
I mean He is this awesome teacher
They would have heard, some might have scene what Jesus did and still some even experienced what Jesus did
There is some joyful noise going on because of Jesus
So much noise that later on the Religous Elite take notice
On snap its that Jesus guy again
We had better watch Him
Jesus was coming to fulfill the law
Remember they enjoyed the law as it was because it gave them power over people and money
Jesus was going to say that it is a personal relationship with God the father through Me
It is no longer about following the letter of the law
Because you can’t do that
What it is about is what I am about to do on the cross and grave that saves you
That grace and mercy are on display
Those who followed Jesus believed that Jesus would come and kick the Romans out
Jesus was going to do more than that
During my study for Sunday I found that all of Jerusalem stirred because of Jesus during His triumpal entry at the end of His life and at the beginning of His life
3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
Church there should be some excitement surrounding Jesus
Because as we often say here at Maranatha
Jesus is still in the business of taking dead men and women and giving them life
That is why He came into Jerusalem so long ago
17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
Jesus did go to be sacrificed only to Judge the world
Or to lord ir over them and hang it over there head
What is about to happen is salvation for a lost world
This changes everything
Jesus Himself says
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
It is only through Jesus that people are saved
It is only through Jesus this morning you can be saved
Church this is why Jesus willingly went into Jerusalem
to give you and I an opportunity to have a personal relationship with Jesus if we will repent and trust Jesus
Because He was being obedient
Because of His great love for the lost
He is our example of how to love the lost people
So church as we come to our time of inivitation this morning
The invitation is just that an inivation to do business with God this morning
Maybe you have questions about salvation or have deicded to this morning to repent of your sin and trust Jesus
Would come and talk with someone at the front
Maybe you would like to spend sometime in prayer at the alter
The alter is open
Jesus was warned about going into Jerusalem
And yet he went anyway
Why church because He was Obedient
He loved the lost
He went into Jerusalem knowing full well what would happen and yet church he did it anyway because of His great love for the lost and there are times if we are honest that the lost annoy us to the point we avoid them all together
