BibleHistorical background
1:1–2. The God of Israel commanded Jonah (see comments under “Author” in the Introduction), a prophet (; ), to travel to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it. (“Great” and “greatly” occur frequently in the book: “great city,” ; ; ; “great wind,” 1:4; “great storm,” v. 12; “greatly feared,” v. 16; “great fish,” v. 17; “greatly displeased,” 4:1; and “very [lit., greatly‘] happy,” 4:6.) The message he was to preach is stated in 3:4. Jonah had divine authority for this message because the word of the LORD came to him. It was authoritative because of its origin. The city of Nineveh was located on the east side of the Tigris River about 550 miles northeast of Samaria (see the map “The Assyrian Empire”). That distance required a journey of more than a month, if Jonah traveled the normal distance of 15–20 miles a day. The great city was second in size only to Babylon. (On Nineveh’s size, see comments under “Authenticity and Historicity” in the Introduction and comments on 4:11.) It was in modern-day Iraq opposite the modern town of Mosul

1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me.” 3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
