One of the best examples of Friendship in the Bible is between Jonathan and David. We can see their friendship in Saul Chapter 18-20.
Saul Chapter 18: 1-3
When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan was bound to David in close friendship, and loved him as much as he loved himself. Saul kept David with him from that day on and did not let him return to his father’s house.
Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as much as himself.
The Bible tells us that Jonathan loved David as much as he loved himself.
The friendship of Jonathan and David embodies what Christ tells us to do in Matthew Chapter 22: 39
The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.
Jonathan and David’s friendship is also unique because of the way that they worked together even when normally you wouldn’t think they would.
To give a little context David was serving in the army for Saul which is the King and the father of Jonathan.
David was excellent at this and ways always successful when he went into battle
David was successful that when the troops returned the women of the area came out and greeted Saul the King and the troops singing this:
As they danced, the women sang:
Saul has killed his thousands,
but David his tens of thousands.
Saul was furious and resented this song. “They credited tens of thousands to David,” he complained, “but they only credited me with thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom?” So Saul watched David jealously from that day forward.
Because of this and the success of David in general Saul became jealous and scared that he would take over the kingdom as he has been selected to be a King.
Due to this jealousy an evil spirit came over Saul and he tries to have him killed through various ways but every time David comes up on top
Out of Desperation Saul does this:
Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Saul’s son Jonathan liked David very much, so he told him, “My father, Saul, intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning and hide in a secret place and stay there. I’ll go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are and talk to him about you. When I see what he says, I’ll tell you.”
Saul wants Jonathan to kill David. But Jonathan as we saw earlier loves David as much as himself and wants him to hide. Jonathan then talks Saul down.
The story continues and they continue to work together in these ways but what I wanted to to see was they way they worked together.
Jonathan and David worked as a team even when it Put Jonathan against his own father and put his life in danger for doing what is right.
Jonathan and David are the shinning example of how we should be with our friends and teams. We should love them as ourselves and when we work together like they did we can do great things.
Alright let’s pray and then we’ll go outside.
