This Easter message presents an expository study of Matthew 28:1–10, focusing on the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the defining event in redemptive history. The sermon traces the biblical narrative from the promise of a Savior in Genesis 3, to the Passover lamb in Exodus 12, to the suffering servant in Isaiah 53, culminating in the resurrection account. Emphasis is placed on the historical reality of the empty tomb, the theological significance of Christ’s victory over sin and death, and the validation of the cross through the resurrection. The message highlights that the resurrection is not merely symbolic, but the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan. The sermon concludes with a clear Gospel invitation, calling listeners to respond in faith and trust in the risen Christ. Because Jesus lives, forgiveness is available, death is defeated, and new life is offered to all who believe.

This morning, I want to ask you one question.
And it’s not a religious question. It’s not a church question.
It’s a life question.
What if the resurrection of Jesus is actually true?
Not tradition. Not symbolism. Not something we celebrate once a year.
But real.
Because if it’s not true… then none of this matters.
But if it is true… then it changes everything about your life.
Your past. Your present. Your future.
The way you see sin. The way you face death. The way you live every single day.
So before we go any further… I want you to wrestle with this:
What if the tomb is really empty?

Opening Statement

Everything in human history hinges on one question.
Not politics. Not economics. Not even morality.
One question:
Did Jesus Christ actually rise from the dead?
Because if He didn’t… then Christianity falls apart.
But if He did… then everything changes.
And this morning… we come to that moment.
The moment the entire Bible has been moving toward.

Matthew 28:1–10 ESV
1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

Series Transition

Over the past weeks, we have been walking through one story.
From Promise… to the Empty Tomb.
We started in the Garden… where sin entered the world…
but God made a promise.
A Savior would come.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Then we went to Egypt… where a lamb was sacrificed…
blood was applied…
Exodus 12:5–7 ESV
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, 6 and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. 7 “Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.
and judgment passed over.
Then we saw the suffering servant… pierced for our transgressions.
Isaiah 53:5 ESV
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Then we sat at the table… where Jesus said,
“This is My body… this is My blood…”
And then the cross.
Where the Lamb of God was slain.
And it looked like the story was over.

I. The Tomb Was Real

Jesus really died.
This was not symbolic. This was not a metaphor.
Roman soldiers didn’t make mistakes.
The cross was designed to kill.
His body was taken down. Wrapped. Placed in a tomb.
A stone rolled in front. Sealed. Guarded.
Everyone knew where He was.
There was no confusion.
Jesus was dead.

II. The Stone Was Moved

Matthew 28:2 ESV
2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
Now don’t miss this.
The stone was not rolled away so Jesus could get out.
The stone was rolled away so we could see in.
When the women arrived…
they weren’t expecting resurrection.
They were expecting death.
But instead…
they found an open tomb.

III. The Grave Was Empty

Matthew 28:5–6 ESV
5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.
That is the most important statement in human history.
He is not here.
The tomb is empty.
Not stolen. Not misplaced.
Empty.
Because Jesus did exactly what He said He would do.
He rose.

IV. The Savior Is Alive

Matthew 28:9 ESV
9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.
This is the turning point.
Christianity is not built on an idea.
It is built on a risen Savior.
They saw Him. They touched Him. They worshiped Him.
Jesus is not a memory.
He is alive.

V. Now Everything Changes

If the tomb is empty…
then everything changes.
Sin has been paid for. Death has been defeated. Hope is no longer wishful thinking.
It is reality.
The promise in the Garden… fulfilled. The Lamb in Egypt… fulfilled. The prophecy in Isaiah… fulfilled. The cross… validated.
Because the tomb is empty.

Now let me say something very clearly.
There are people in this room…
who believe the tomb is empty.
You believe Jesus rose.
You’ve heard it your whole life.
But here’s the question you cannot avoid:
Has it actually changed you?
Because you can believe in the resurrection…
and still be lost.
You can celebrate Easter…
and still be separated from God.
You can know the story…
and never surrender your life.
And the resurrection doesn’t just demand belief…
it demands a response.

Invitation

So what does this mean for you?
Because it is not enough to know the story.
It is not enough to believe that it happened.
You must respond.
Remember Egypt.
It was not enough to believe in the lamb.
The blood had to be applied.
And the same is true today.
It is not enough to know about Jesus.
You must trust Him.
You must surrender your life to Him.

Invitation

Right now… I want to speak to you.
Not the person beside you. Not the person behind you.
You.
Because this is about your life. Your soul. Your eternity.
Every one of us walked in here with something.
Sin. Guilt. Regret. Shame.
And no matter how hard we try…
we cannot fix that on our own.
But that’s why Jesus came.
He lived the life we could not live. He died the death we deserved. And three days later… He walked out of that tomb.
So that you could be forgiven. So that you could be made new. So that you could have real life.
(Pause)
And here’s the question…
What are you going to do with that?
(Slow down… let the room feel the weight)
Because listen…
If the tomb is empty— this is not just information…
This is a decision.
You cannot walk out of here neutral. You cannot hear this and stay the same.
Jesus didn’t rise from the grave so you could admire Him…
He rose so you could belong to Him.
Some of you in this room…
You’ve been around church. You know the story. You’ve heard about the cross.
But if you’re honest…
You’ve never truly surrendered your life to Him.
And today…
God has brought you here for this moment.
Not by accident. Not by chance.
On purpose.
Because the same power that rolled that stone away…
Can roll the stone off your heart.
The same Jesus who walked out of that grave…
Can give you new life today.
But here’s the truth—
Just like in Egypt…
The lamb was not enough until the blood was applied.
It’s not enough to know about Jesus.
You must respond to Him.
So I’m asking you—personally:
Have you ever truly repented of your sin? Have you ever trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior?
Have you ever surrendered your life to Him?
Because if not…
Today is your day.
Right now…
Not next week. Not when life settles down.
Right now.
The tomb is empty. The price has been paid. The invitation is open.
So here’s what I’m going to ask you to do:
If today you say,
“Pastor, I need Jesus. I want to be saved. I’m ready to surrender my life to Him…”
Don’t stay where you are.
When we begin to sing—
Step out Come forward Take me by the hand
And say,
“I’m ready.”
No shame. No fear. No hesitation.
Because listen—
Jesus was not ashamed to hang on a cross for you…
Don’t be ashamed to come to Him.
And for some of you—
You are saved…
But you’ve been living like the tomb is still sealed.
No joy No victory No surrender
Today is your moment too.
Come kneel Come pray Come return
Because if the tomb is empty…
Everything changes.
(Pause… soften tone)
Father, in this moment… draw hearts to Yourself.
Because the tomb is empty…
you don’t have to leave the same way you came in.
