The Coward and the King

Matthew 27:1–2 CSB
1 When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put him to death. 2 After tying him up, they led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.
Why Pilate?
Pilate didn’t really care about their culture or the people but he did have power.
The power to crucify people.
Matthew 27:11–14 CSB
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor. “Are you the king of the Jews?” the governor asked him. Jesus answered, “You say so.” 12 While he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he didn’t answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how much they are testifying against you?” 14 But he didn’t answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.
Are you the King?
Jesus appears before Pilate two times
Why did Pilate ask this question to Jesus?
“You say so” NO sign or wonders No defenses.
How many men do you think have beg Pilate for their life?
“amazed”
Matthew 27:15–18 CSB
15 At the festival the governor’s custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted. 16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you—Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew it was because of envy that they had handed him over.
Pilate was trying to find a way out!
Matthew 27:19 CSB
19 While he was sitting on the judge’s bench, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I’ve suffered terribly in a dream because of him.”
Pilate’s wife STOP this man is different.
Pilate’s wife had dreams about Jesus.
God made sure Jesus had at least one person defending HIM!
Why did the dreams stick out “I’ve suffered terribly”
I wonder how this play out.
Matthew 27:20–21 CSB
20 The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus. 21 The governor asked them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” “Barabbas!” they answered.
“Persuaded the crowds” by who?
They knew that Pilate would bend to the crowd
Pilate was a Coward!
But if we are not careful we can fall into the same trap.
Worried about the crowd!
Matthew 27:22–23 CSB
22 Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ?” They all answered, “Crucify him!” 23 Then he said, “Why? What has he done wrong?” But they kept shouting all the more, “Crucify him!”
“What has he done wrong?”
John 18:37 (CSB) 37 “You are a king then?” Pilate asked. “You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
John 18:38 “38 “What is truth?” said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no grounds for charging him.”
John 19:4 (CSB) 4 Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing him out to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging him.”
Matthew 27:24 CSB
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. See to it yourselves!”
Pilate was more concerned with man than doing what was right!
“I am innocent of this man’s blood. See to it yourselves!”
He knew it was wrong to crucify Jesus!
Pilate is more known for this than any thing else.
He made the Apostles Creed
Matthew 27:25–26 CSB
25 All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released Barabbas to them and, after having Jesus flogged, handed him over to be crucified.
“His blood be on us and on our children!” WOW
That was the point, wasn’t it?
They thought they where destroying a problem HE was the solution to the problem of sin.
James 4:17 CSB
17 So it is sin to know the good and yet not do it.
What can we learn for Pilate?
You can know that Jesus is different.
You may even want to chose HIM over the crowd but you action are what matter!
