Good Friday service - we discussed the lead up to Cross of Christ and how Luke portrayed Jesus as innocent throughout the questioning from Pilate and Herod.
the Jewish leadership had something else in mind though and so did the enemy of our souls.
God’s plan was at work throughout the entire event, with Jesus going to the cross as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!
As we begin reading, Luke shares with us that the first day of the week, Sunday, a few ladies we going to the tomb to complete the embalming process.
they saw Jesus die and they believe He is still in the grave.
What a surprise for them… and also, we will see Peter having the same experience.
a few questions we can ask as we read Luke’s account.
What were the expectations after Jesus death?
how did there expectations change?
why did Jesus have to rise again?
If you are hear today and believe Jesus in alive, then when I say Jesus is alive - you can speak out “He is indeed” a slide on the screen will cue you.
the women were doing what was in order to do.
finishing the process after a death.
What a struggle this must have been!
They knew Jesus.
they had hope in Jesus.
everything must have seemed lost for them.
but they carried out what needed to be done....or at least they thought it needed to be done.
we see their expectation here that Jesus is in the grave.
as they walk along, Marks gospel we find the women wondering how they would be able to get the stone moved.
But Luke brings us right to the moment they see the tomb.
now, this must have caused them alarm or they thought someone else was going in to the tomb.
either way, they were going to see the body.
verse 3 tells us...
their expectation would be to find the body of Jesus.... so this would be causing them trouble.
they would be questioning what happened?
they would need answers but who would have them?
God knows what we need, what we truly need and He planned to answer them.
Luke refers to these two as men, but as the other gospels clear this up, they are angels.
angels sent to give a message.
why does Luke use the reference ‘men’?
angels in scripture are seen as men, and with the clothing described here as dazzling apparel, it helps to understand who they are.
meeting with angels was not common.....and could be scary.
it certainly was not expected.
verse 5 explains how they reacted and 5-7 show us what the angels spoke.
Jesus is alive!
He is indeed!
how amazing to hear angels speak!
what an honor, what a moment! it was needed for these ladies to go from what they expected, to the realization of what took place.
Jesus is alive!
as this dawns on them, they start thinking and remembering....
Jesus prophesied on numerous occasions of what the Son of Man must do.
How He would suffer at the hands of evil men.
He would die, and rise again.
but everyone He told could not understand what He was saying at the time.
It was certainly something miraculous and hard to comprehend.
But, Jesus knew they would remember!
sometimes we just have to remember what Jesus has said… and have faith that He will accomplish what He has said.
Amen!
how could you hold something like this in and not tell it!
this is exciting.
this is changing everything.
Jesus is alive!
He’s alive indeed!
Luke next shares who the ladies were that visited the tomb.
the expectation of the disciples was is disarray.
they had followed Jesus for 3 years....ministering, learning, eating together, living life together.
Then with the death of their leader, they must have been crushed.
Completely wrecked.
so these stories, just sounded crazy.... not real.
they were in the mindset of grieving and sadness knowing that Jesus was gone.
But still, Peter needed to take a look.
investigate a little....
Peter, of all people.
the one who said he would always be there for Jesus.
We see the struggle he has with this happening.
We know the rest of the story for the disciples.
it is one of the reasons that the church exists today, is because they believed.
finally they believed.
and everything changed after that.
Peter went on to be a church leader and at the end of his life to die for his faith.
He knew Jesus is alive.
He’s alive indeed!
why did Jesus need to rise from the dead?
well, we know Luke demonstrates the innocence of Jesus through the trials… but scripture also proves the sinlessness of Jesus.
That He lived perfectly.
and we also know from scripture that because of sin there is death.
but since Jesus didn’t sin, death had no right on his life.
So, we know His death was in our place.
He died our death for our sin.
Our sin is forgiven through His death.
His rising confirms His perfection.
death had to let him go.
And what Jesus has done though His life and death and resurrection for those who believe, He has traded His perfect life for our sinful life.
He has traded accounts.
So believers have the perfect life of Jesus to stand before God with.
That is the good news of the resurrection!
Jesus is alive!
