What do you remember about John the baptist ministry and Baptism?
Preparatory.
To prepare the way for who?
In what way?
Repentance.
Luke 3:3–5 “3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough ways smooth;”
Move any and every obstruction out of the way.
Repent means to “turn”, “change of mind”, “return to God”,
To repent, is to hate your sin.
What are some things you need to repent of?
Sometimes instead of confess and repent of our sins, what do we do?
We need to own that, so we can see the beauty and glory of Jesus.
Why did Jesus come to John for Baptism?
Did Jesus have sin to repent of?
Hebrews 4:15 “15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
Sympathize. Is that our answer. No. Because he already took on flesh.
2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Jesus so identifies with us that the apostle Paul here says he was “made sin”. And why? That we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Permit it at this time so that all righteousness might be fulfilled.
God has been looking for a faithful Son from the beginning. Who are some of God’s sons in the Old Testament? Two of the major son’s?
Luke 3:38 “38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.”
Was Adam a faithful son? Israel is called God’s son, was Israel faithful? No.
How about Jesus, The Son of God. What does God say about him? Luke 3:21–22 “21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.””
Jesus is God’s only begotten, faithful and beloved Son.
By faith in Jesus. By faith in God’s Son. We become faithful Sons and Daughters in Jesus. By becomming Jesus disciple. You have the righteousness that God requires. That you don’t have in yourself, and could not because of your fallen sinful nature.
Is that good news?
This is the good news that the disciples discovered early on after spending a night with Jesus.
John 1:35–42 “35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour). 40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
They had discovered something about Jesus saving work and they were thrilled!
What is an exciting event that you like to tell others about? You find out your going on vacation to Florida, or going to sky zone.
For these early disciples, it was that they found The Lamb of God who takes away their sins, they found the Messiah, they found the Savior. That’s what it means to be a disciple, one who has repented, and embraced Jesus gospel, and who desires to continue to follow him, to learn from him, and tell others that same good news.
Points of app
Call your sin what it is and repent of it. If you don’t there’ll be no room for Jesus in your heart.
Come to Jesus by faith. I am a sinner, and I have no hope without you Jesus. Forgive me. Work in me. Change me. Save me.
Ask God to give you to follow him in true discipleship. And to give you a desire to tell others of Jesus beauty and glory.
Amen. Lets pray.
