7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
9 Hide thy face from my sins, And blot out all mine iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with thy free spirit.

David is everyone’s favorite for a reason!
He was God’s favorite too!
1 Samuel 13:14 “14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart...”
Acts 13:22 “22 …I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.”
WHY?
David desired God above everything…
Aligned himself, his family and his nation to God…
David pursued God and His will like a deer driven by hunters, panting after water! Ps 42.1-2
David’s great secret was this simple:
He lived a repented life
He desired God’s presence above personal position or gain
Heart for worship
There is no greater example of this then in our text…
He had made one of the greatest mistakes of his life in having an affair with Bathsheba, then covering it up by murdering her husband.
All seemed to be well until the prophet stopped by and exposed him and his sin.
Consequences were severe
Child dies, future chaos in his family, son that sexually assaults a sister, brother murders brother, then revolts and drives his father out of his palace…
Sin always has consequence!
But what gets me about the story is David’s response…
He was king, he could have had Nathan killed.
Rather he would fall on his face and repent!
I am the man!
He would pick up his pen in all the chaos and write:
Psalm 51:7 “7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
Psalm 51:11 “11 Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy spirit from me.”
David understood something!
Psalm 27:1 “1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
Psalm 119:105 “105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And a light unto my path.”
David knew that God is light!
When the light shown into his life it exposed things…
Good and bad, whatever was there - it was on display for all to see!
We’ve all heard the old saying; I’m not afraid of the dark, but what’s in the dark!
Spiritually it is opposite!
People don’t fear the dark, they fear the light!
Look at scripture:
Isaiah 9:2 “2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”
John 1:1–10 “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.”
John 3:19 “19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”
John 8:12 “12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Romans 1:21 “21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”
Ephesians 4:18 “18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:”
People love the darkness because their sin remains hidden!
They hate light because it exposes their secretes!
John 3:20 “20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.”
Job 24:13 “13 They are of those that rebel against the light; They know not the ways thereof, Nor abide in the paths thereof.”
The problem is:
Proverbs 28:13 “13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”
Love the light!
1 John 1:7 “7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
Malachi 4:2 “2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise With healing in his wings; And ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.”
John 3:21 “21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
Love the light!
Don’t fear the light!
Yes it’s uncomfortable…
Yes, you may see some things you don’t like…
BUT I say like David, God purge me! Wash me! Make me clean!
Run to the light!
Conclusion
I grew up in a time when the prophet came to town, no one showed up to church.
They were afraid they would be exposed.
Never made any sense to me!
Men love darkness when:
• Sin is preferred over surrender
• Comfort is chosen over conviction
• Secrecy is chosen over transformation
• Pride is chosen over repentance
But the promise of Scripture is clear:
• Light reveals
• Light cleanses
• Light restores
• Light saves
You cannot walk in darkness and live in victory—but one step into the light can change everything.
