Genesis 45:1-8.

Central Idea:

Question: What do we notice about this encounter?

I. It was intense. [1-3]

Joseph could no longer keep his composure

Though Joseph sent the Egyptians away, his weeping was of such intensity that they still heard him

Upon exposing his identity, his brothers were terrified

II. It was revealing. [4-8]

Joseph, again, exposes his identity

Attached to it, he exposes their sinful, scandalous act of selling him into slavery

Joseph comforted his brothers

Don’t be grieved or angry

Because God sent me…

Three times this is repeated:

Genesis 45:5 “5 And now don’t be grieved or angry with yourselves for selling me here, because God sent me ahead of you to preserve life.”

Genesis 45:7 “7 God sent me ahead of you to establish you as a remnant within the land and to keep you alive by a great deliverance.”

Genesis 45:8 “8 Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.”

to preserve life...to establish you as a remnant within the land and to keep you alive by a great deliverance.

It reveals the plan of God and His provision

Here, God redeems the unthinkable and terrible sin the brothers committed

Here, God reveals His faithful character:

To work in the most difficult of circumstances

To do what He promised to do— to and through Abraham, Isaac, and now Jacob.

The purpose behind it all is the preservation of the line of Abraham (now through Jacob) because apart from sending Joseph ahead of the famine, there would be no provision for them to survive.
