Psalm 8

1. Engage (Introduction)

Start by asking:

“Have you ever been somewhere with no city lights—where you could see the stars clearly?”

Let them respond briefly.

Follow up:

“When you look up at a sky full of stars, what do you feel? Small? Overwhelmed? Maybe even insignificant?”

Pause.

“David had that same experience. As a shepherd, he spent nights under the open sky. And in Psalm 8, he writes what he felt—not just awe at creation, but amazement that the God who made all of it cares about us.”

Read Psalm 8 aloud.

Then say:

“This psalm is pure praise—but it’s also deeply personal. It answers a question we all wrestle with…”

2. Tension (The Problem We Feel)

“Here’s the tension in Psalm 8—and in our lives:

The universe is unbelievably big… …and we are incredibly small.”

“But at the same time, the Bible says we matter deeply to God.”

Ask:

“How can both of those be true at the same time?”

If we’re so small → why does God care?

If we matter so much → why do we feel so insignificant?

“That’s the question David is wrestling with. And Psalm 8 gives us the answer.”

3. Truth (Walk Through the Text)

Point 1: God’s Glory Is Obvious Everywhere (vv. 1–2)

Psalm 8:1–2 ESV

1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.

“O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Explain:

“LORD” (all caps) = Yahweh (God’s covenant name)

“our Lord” = personal relationship

David is saying: 👉 “The God who rules everything is our God.”

“Majestic” = weighty, glorious, beyond comparison

“God’s glory is not hidden—it is on display everywhere.”

Then verse 2:

“Out of the mouth of babies and infants…”

Explain:

God uses the weakest voices to silence His enemies

His power doesn’t depend on human strength

Application:

You don’t have to be powerful to glorify God

Even the smallest voice can honor Him

God’s greatness doesn’t need our help—but He invites our praise

Big Idea: 👉 God’s glory fills the earth and doesn’t depend on us.

Transition

“So David starts with God’s greatness—but then he looks up…”

Point 2: God’s Creation Puts Us in Our Place (vv. 3–4)

3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers…”

Explain:

“Fingers” → personal, detailed creation

Not random → intentional

David sees:

The moon

The stars

The vastness of space

And his response:

“What is man that you are mindful of him?”

This is not low self-esteem—it’s accurate perspective.

Explain the Question:

“What is man?” → Who are we, really?

“Mindful” → Why would God even think about us?

“Care for him?” → Why would He act on our behalf?

Application:

This kills pride

We are not the center of the universe

Life is not about us

But also:

God think about you does

God care does

Big Idea: 👉 Seeing God’s creation humbles us—but doesn’t erase our value.

Transition

“So we are small… but we are not worthless. In fact, David says something shocking next.”

Point 3: God Has Given Humanity Dignity and Purpose (vv. 5–8)

5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, 7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

“Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings…”

Explain:

“Heavenly beings” (Elohim) → possibly angels

Humans are:

Below God

But above the rest of creation

“Crowned with glory and honor” = royal language

Jesus is the perfect “man” Psalm 8 points to

Application:

You are not an accident

You have purpose

Your life has meaning because God gave it

But also:

You are not in control—God is

You are a steward, not the owner

Big Idea: 👉 God gives us dignity and responsibility under His rule.

“And after walking through all of that… David ends exactly where he started.”

Point 4: Everything Leads Back to Praise (v. 9)

9 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

“O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Explain:

Same as verse 1 → intentional

This is called (framing device) inclusio

Meaning: 👉 Everything in between points back to God’s glory

Application:

Theology should lead to worship

Understanding God should change how we live

Big Idea: 👉 Everything begins and ends with God’s glory.

You are small… but you are significant.”

“Not because of who you are— but because of who God is.”

Don’t live like everything is about you

Don’t live like your life doesn’t matter

👉 Live like someone created by God, crowned by God, and cared for by God
