Intro

Exodus 20:1–7 KJV 1900
1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
We concluded by way of introduction last week, that:
9 of the 10 are repeated in the new testament - excluding keeping of the Sabbath
These laws were never a means of salvation for Israel
Remember: we are not under the law, but under grace
However there is still importance and value in the law for us, though we are not commanded to keep all of the Mosaic law for Israel
God began this entire thing by:
Stating His Authority (to give the law)
For there to be a law, there must be a law-giver...
That law-giver can’t just be anyone for anyone reason...
But God can give this law because:
“God is self-existent, eternal, all-powerful; therefore, He has an incontestable right to command us.”
In the first commandment, we learned God was demanding exclusivity...
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me”
We saw that God reiterated commandments 1 and 2 to us in the new testament and we looked at many examples...
Commandment # 1: Thou shalt have no other gods before me
Commandment # 2: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
Violated by the making of the golden calf...

Commandment # 3: Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain

Vain: empty; worthless; having no substance, value or importance

1. The Prohibition

THOU SHALT NOT:
Something you’re commanded NOT to do
This commandment deals with the manner of our worship...
Not only are we to put God first and reject all other “gods” or images of the sort, but when we DO worship and serve Him, it better be done with all possible reverence and seriousness...

2. The Action

TAKE (LIFT UP, BEAR, CARRY OR EXALT)
The command rests in the word “take”...
Take: to lift; to bear; to carry; to exalt
It’s a verb that is also found in Genesis 44:1
Genesis 44:1 KJV 1900
1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.
It’s something that gets taken from one place to another...
“Taking” God’s name is included in:
What we say
What we do
How we do it
Turn to:
Luke 9:23 KJV 1900
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
In the words of Jesus Himself...
What He requires for us to properly follow and serve Him...
Is to “take up” our cross and follow Him...
Exodus 20:7 KJV 1900
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
The way in which we carry our cross matters to God...

3. The Person

THE NAME OF THE LORD THY GOD
(what His name means)
Exodus 34:4–7 KJV 1900
4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. 5 And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
Moses’ response:
Exodus 34:8 KJV 1900
8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
What if every time we heard the name of God spoken, we had this response?
Exodus 3:13–14 KJV 1900
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
There is more to a name than a simple identity...
It is WHAT God is and WHO God is...
HE IS:
Isaiah 9:6 KJV 1900
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
HE is “Emmanuel”… “God with us”...
We are baptized “in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost”...
WE pray “in Jesus’ name”...

God said:
Exodus 20:7 KJV 1900
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
When you utter the name of Christ, let it not be for any reason than for praise and glory be due to His name...
Notice with me:
God doesn’t say “Don’t take my name”
He says, “Don’t take my name in vain” - Don’t Misuse my name
God cares about what we do with His name...
You won’t use His name in vain if you understand His name...
Philippians 2:9–11 KJV 1900
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Think with me:
a.) We better do church correctly because of His name
Matthew 18:20 KJV 1900
20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
But it says “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain...”
Is your attendance to church today a bit: empty; worthless; having no substance, value or importance (VAIN)
b.) We better witness correctly because of His name
Acts 9:15 KJV 1900
15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
Luke 24:47 KJV 1900
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Is your witness a bit: empty; worthless; having no substance, value or importance (VAIN)
c.) We better remember (Lord’s supper) correctly because of His name
Romans 10:13 KJV 1900
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Acts 4:12 KJV 1900
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Why should I reverence, love and protect the name of Christ?
It saved you from hell!
We better not be taking (carrying, lifting, exalting) His name in vain...
